I was thinking about getting either an LCD widescreen or DLP Projection widescreen tv & needed some advice about which has the better picture quality etc... I was mostly interested in this one seen here http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4926756 It is much bigger & less expensive than most smaller LCD widescreen tvs plus it would possibly have much better sound than the smaller speakers on LCD tvs. Which one do you think would last me the longest before having to buy a new tv or which would be more prone to tear up first?

If you have a need to hang the TV on the wall, LCD or Plasma are the way to go. But, they both have some inherent issues. LCD does not display a true black and also has a lot of motion trail artifacts that can make a picture look choppy and well... fugly. With Plasma, if something goes wrong with the gas chambers in them, you've got yourself a disposable TV because they can't be repaired. DLP tech has been around for ten+ years and has had the bugs worked out of it. They display true black, have minimal artifact issues and when the lamp on the DLP projection sets starts going dim after a lot of use, you can replace it and you've got yourself a brand new tv. You can read more about DLP here: http://www.dlp.com/ . Whatever you do, get a set with an integrated HDTV tuner so you can pick up the local HD channels. I don't know much about the RCA sets, but Samsung and Toshiba are the top players in this market, so I would strongly suggest that you look into those brands. Go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and play with them and see which ones have the best pictures and feature sets before you buy. Keep an eye out for things like ample connectivity options in the back including HDMI inputs, as that will be the standard in the future. And, this is one item I would actually recommend the extended in store warranty on, just to cover your bases. I have a Samsung 46" DLP set that I got from Best Buy over two years ago and it has worked flawlessly. I purchased the in store warranty, which covers everything on the set in parts and labor for five years. I caught it on sale and got enough bonus points from Best Buy to purchase a PS2 and a bunch of accessories free and clear. So, shop around a bit. The prices on these sets has come down quite a bit in the last couple years, so you should be able to find a good deal.

Hope that helps.

jeez jag, he didn't ask for your life story. Why didn't you just tell him about the part where your mom wouldn't let you get a dog when you were two, so you peed on the rug out of disdain.

Samsung makes great HDTVs. I've got a 30" Widescreen CRT SlimFit HDTV from them. I love it.

FWIW Jag, that was a great write-up. I've been looking at HD sets, and have also decided on a Samsung DLP. I also understand it's the cheapest way to get 1080p. I think that's the way I'm going very soon, likely a Samsung as well.

Glad you found it helpful, Chris. Definitely go with a 1080p set. That's about the only thing mine is lacking at the moment, so I'll probably upgrade in the next year or two once content for 1080p becomes a bit more prevalent.
