Decided to rewatch BoP.
Still don't understand why they did what they did with DLL.
WB really should've let them play out the opening montage throughout the first episode instead of just the montage.
As i watch this....it really should've been Barbara/Dinah as mentors to Helena. Not B/H mentoring Dinah.
Turning Selina and by extension Helena into metahumans is definitely another interesting choice. It's clear they wanted her to be their new Buffy but didnt have faith that she could be Buffy if she didnt have superpowers. Not the worst thing the show did. Her costume however....esp the pilot is a whole nother choice.
Helena is fighting crime around town, is known to people as Selinas daughter but she doesn't wear a mask.....I mean....I know we werent really in the age of superheroes wearing masks on the small screen yet but really should've thrown a domino mask on her. There's a reason why her parents wear them.
They do give a little Smallville shoutout that I never noticed until today with their "meteor freaks"
Barbara Gordon has always been literal perfection in this show and the best live action version we've ever gotten. The flashbacks to her briefly as Batgirl were great and much needed for the pilot but like I said before....they should've been allowed to flesh that out more at least the first half of the pilot. But the small glimpse of 'The Killing Joke' (voiced by Hamill himself) was good and probably the only time we will ever see it adapted in live action.
They also somehow got away with having Batman in the pilot. Sure its literally blink and you miss him...and it leads to the ever so popular tv trope of "Batman has disappeared from Gotham!" but showing him and "Queen of the underworld" Catwoman (even though the costume doesnt translate as well as it did in the movie) was exciting.
The biggest "huh" about the pilot and the show in general as I go forward is the CGI. Why was this show soooo reliant on CGI! Was it because they didnt shoot in Vancouver? (idk if they did or didnt tbh)? But its just weird how reliant they were on it compared to Smallville or Buffy or even Charmed. They were very set on shooting on a set which is a bit weird for a pilot episode since its usually their most expensive episode but all those other shows werent as "set" heavy until later on in their series.
Having our main big bad be Helena's psychiatrist and eventually SPOILER IF FOR WHATEVER REASON YOU ARE READING THIS AND NEVER WATCHEDbeinghqIN her first live action adaptation and solo appearance was FANTASTIC.
As I type this episode 2 is on and the opening credits song is HORRIBLE for this show. It isnt the original broadcast version (I wish someone would go back and put it in back in). This isnt Dawnsons Creek. Its not Gilmore Girls. The original version suited the show much better, Revolution by Aimee Allen.
All three Robins get a shoutout but I dont think we ever get updates as to why they arent in Gotham. They really shouldve been allowed to appear.
