Oh, I dig that. Viggo would be awesome, he can be so intense.

Ah what a coincidence that you guys have named my two favourite actors right now, Phoenix and Wahlberg! I love the idea of Nolan's trilogy wrapping up with Batman's biggest threat coming from the mob, and not strictly another supervillain with their own motives seperate from the mob.

You know, I'm actually liking Benicio when I think of it. If there's something he can do well, it's crazy criminal. And two-faced. So he'd be pretty much perfect for it to me.

Okay, I love Denzel, but I think he's way too old to play Black Mask. I see the Black Mask character as serving as a dark mirror of Bruce Wayne/Batman: Raised by rich parents, orphaned, inherits a business empire, turns to a disguise for personal fulfillment. But he makes the wrong choices at every turn where Bruce made the right choices. He shows what Bruce could have become without proper guidance from Alfred, Rachel, even Ra's.

Therefore, the actor who plays him needs to be similar to Bale: young, smooth, attractive, but with an edge. Leo is an easy cast, but he seems to big, he would overshadow the movie. Nolan never seems to make the obvious choice, so here's a left field cast: Ryan Phillippe.

He's a very good actor, as shown in "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Breach." He's known, but not a huge star. I think he's exactly the kind of guy who would work in this film series, and in this role.

Guy Pearce. Worked well with Christopher Nolan in Memento and can play an arrogant, wealthy manipulator and criminal wonderfully. His role in The Count of Monte Cristo comes to mind.

I've always liked the idea of Jason Patric. Guy Pearce is good, too.

Oops. Sorry Jakk. I third it...

Meh... Going from Ra's/Scarecrow over Joker/Two-Face to... Black Mask??

Weak, very weak. Black Mask has a lame origin story and no interesting modus operandi. He's just a sadistic gangster in a mask. There's no way that can succesfully follow TDK, even if you throw in Bane for good measure.

I dont know, Black Mask has a couple of merits to him

1)Its not hard to make him look realistic, he's just a guy in a mask which could look like anything, only design requirement is it has to be black.

2)He's much more of an obvious threat than a guy like riddler as his whole MO is being a criminal mastermind, overlord type character, rather than performing gimmick crimes.

3) The obsession with masks and faces is quite relevent thematically.

It would be easy to tie him in with the whole esculation/rise of the supervillians thing. He's somewhat inspired by the jokers idea of a "new class of criminal" except instead of commiting random crimes he actively attempts to lead gothams new freak underworld. He could be the guy who reqruits the riddler, or provides criminals like Firebug with their equipment and name.

His origin is weak as hell and should be changed or done away with entirely, but the masks thing has a lot of milage. I like the idea of a villian who sees whats going on with gotham and ultimately wants to embrace it and control it. To me thats a much more interesting motivation than a guy like Bane or someone.

What I find interesting about Black Mask, is that he could really be played by anyone. I mean, I have absolutley no idea what Roman Sionis looks like in the comics. Every time I try to google his picture, I only get pictures of him with the mask on. I'm assuming it's been shown in the comics, but i've never seen it.

It's cool though, cuz he's the one role that's had casting suggestions as varied as they are. Everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Michael Clarke Duncan has been suggested for this guy.

Been a while since I read it and I might be thinking of something else but didn't they show in his first appearance that his face is deformed from accidentally pouring boiling water on himself as a kid? or is it from the crappy cosmetics he sold? I forget which exactly (leanign towards the boiling water story) but I am pretty sure his face is deformed under the mask

and to Riven and others Black Mask is anything but lame and lightweight... sure he isn't a "classic" villain but.... he (again going by memory) killed his parents then carved his mask out of one of their coffin lids... later he tortures then seemingly kills spoiler in the comics too... I think he has a ton of potential

Black Mask also has a vendetta against Bruce Wayne. Like they did with the Joker, they should avoid a origin story with Black Mask. They could have him as a business rival that hates Bruce.Theres one issue in the comics where Black Mask kidnaps Wayne Enterprise execuitves.btw I also support Benicio Del Toro being cast as Black Mask.
