There is still hope

To be or not to be, that is the questions Switch owner are asking themselves when it comes to Blizzard's massively popular shooter Overwatch, and according to the Big B, nothing is ruled out.
The Nintendo Switch had a great launch which has lead to a lot of developers have promised to support it, and on top of it all, Zelda got amazing scores. It all seems to be going rather well for the Switch, but it seems like Overwatch it still has a way to go until it comes to the console, if it ever comes. Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan explained their view on it over at Reddit.

"Getting Overwatch on the Switch is very challenging for us. But we're always open-minded about exploring possible platforms."

Seems like Blizzard has encountered some great challenges when either trying to or planning to make Overwatch for the Switch. That, combined with the increased production costs for Nintendos new system, might indeed make for some great development challenges. Kaplan also assures people that it is not a decision made to discriminate Nintendo gamers and said that he's "loving the Switch!" and that his "second favorite gaming platform of all time is the 3DS." Unfortunately, he did not reveal what his favorite platform was.
The door for Overwatch isn't closed, though it might take a while for Blizzard's critically acclaimed game to get there. In the meanwhile, Blizzard will keep on updating with fresh content.

Analysts peg Overwatch League at a potential $100 million in its first year

March 28, 2017 9 comments

One of the big announcements from last year's BlizzCon was the addition of the new Overwatch League, a project Blizzard is using to help push competitive gaming and branding with a dedicated e-sports organization.

It's still a little early to say how successful it's going to be, but analyst predictions have it pegged as a potential moneymaker of $100 million in its first year. That's a lot of money for something where the game is already being made and balanced.

The prediction was made by investment management firm Morgan Stanley and outlines several potential futures, with the $100 million figure requiring about 72,000 regular viewers during the season. Morgan Stanley also predicts that much will depend on the future of e-sports as a viable market, depending on whether competitve gaming turns out to have a broad appeal or fails to connect with a larger paying audience.Read more

The Overwatch World Cup is making a return, and this time around, you can help your country reach the top.
“Starting today, we will begin tracking the skill ratings of the top 100 players from every country to determine each country’s average rating,” Blizzard’s post on the subject reads. “Then, in April, we’ll use those average ratings to identify which 32 countries from around the world have the most skilled players. These countries will move on to our live qualifiers… where they will battle in groups of eight for a chance to compete on the BlizzCon 2017 stage.”
The first step of the process is to choose the top 32-ranking countries, determined by average skill ranking. This means that the more players boost their skill ratings, the higher their country will be ranked. At the moment, South Korea is leading the list with an average skill rating of 4534, China is in second place with 4531, and the United States is claiming third place with an even 4500 skill rating. Players have 26 more days to make those numbers change, however.
Once a country has made it onto the top 32-list, players will vote on “local experts” to make up their own 2017 Overwatch World Cup National Committee. Those experts will be responsible for picking teams based on statistics, player synergy, and past game performance. Only “eligible players” will be able to vote, though the definition of what makes a player “eligible” hasn’t yet been released.
Once teams are decided, they’ll enter the week-long qualifier rounds that will be held in the summer. Matches can be watched online or in-person at four different stage events in North America, Europe, and Asia. The top two finishers will automatically move on to the final stage: the World Cup finals at BlizzCon.
The full details of the selection process can be found on Blizzard’s page here. If you want to keep an eye on your country’s average skill rank, the automatically-updated list can be found on the official site.

Sounds like a good idea for a competition. Would be cool if all the big games had a similar tournament.

so, can you have "1-on-1" matches against an opponent, and can that opponent be AI controlled?

So, like a fighting game, I pick my favorite character, then the computer picks my opponent and the stage, and then we face off 1-on-1?

and if that's possible, do I still need PS+ to do that?

Director Jeff Kaplan Discusses The Challenges Of Making Overwatch For The Switch. April 9, 2017 . 3:30pm

While open to the idea of a Switch version, Kaplan noted the difficulty of maintaining the game on PC, PS4, and Xbox One while patching simultaneously.

10 comments Read >

Last month, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan mentioned that Blizzard was open to the possibility of bringing the popular first-person shooter to the Nintendo Switch, though the task would be “very challenging.” Now, Express had the chance to talk to Kaplan a bit more about the possibility of a Switch version.

First off, Kaplan noted the difficulty of maintaining the game on three platforms while patching simultaneously.

“Our first couple of patches would come out on PC first and then later on the consoles. And a lot of that is because you’re working with Microsoft and Sony, and you want to be compliant to their ecosystems,” Kaplan said. “Adding a third ecosystem to that just adds a lot of complexity for us, as well.”

However, Kaplan isn’t about to completely dismiss the idea of a Switch version, saying that he likes to “tell people we’re very open-minded about what platforms we could be on,” and that just because they are not on a platform as of right now, that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t consider it in the future.

Here’s a look at all of Kaplan’s comments regarding the Switch:
“I think the problem is, we’ve really targeted our min spec in a way that we would have to revisit performance and how to get on that platform. And also, it’s already challenging right now maintaining three platforms and patching simultaneously, which is something that we’ve finally been able to achieve.”

“Our first couple of patches would come out on PC first and then later on the consoles. And a lot of that is because you’re working with Microsoft and Sony, and you want to be compliant to their ecosystems. Adding a third ecosystem to that just adds a lot of complexity for us, as well.”

“But I always like to tell people we’re very open-minded about what platforms we could be on. Just because we’re not on a platform right now, it doesn’t mean we won’t reconsider it in the future, so we stay aware of all these things.”

Overwatch is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
