Bohemian Rhapsody

This could be his chance to prove himself as a serious actor. I would be very surprised if he does his own singing, though. There are few professional singers today who can reach Freddy's range, and if Cohen can actually pull it off maybe he should consider moonlighting as a musician.

I'm kinda iffy about his voice...but I'm pretty sure he will at the very least study Freddie's mannerisms and speech patterns and such.

I'm surprised that the movie will not be covering Mercury's death, though. The way he went out was very sad and shocking, since he announced his illness only one day before his death. There was plenty of drama in his life to write a story about without covering his last days, though.

I guess they're choosing to show the way he lived rather than the way he died.

There are only two male singers who come close to Mercury. Mika and Adam Lambert. Neither are actors. Neither look anything like Mercury.

Just like Ray, Selena, The Jackson 5, etc. the singing will be dubbed. It really shouldn't be a worry.

Really though, which would you rather have-- the actual artist's music, or an actor trying to imitate them? It's like listening to a master recording vs. karaoke.

I literally **** my pants the first time I heard Mika and thought someone resurrected Freddy Mercury.

Yeah, I want to hear QUEEN. Not someone attempt to sing Queen. :o

Heh, me too. I was in my room and VH1 was on in another room, and they played Grace Kelly and I was like "WHHAAAAAAAAAAT?" Been a fan ever since.

Sacha Baren Cohen as Freddy Mercury? That's an...interesting choice.

im just curious about the singing. will he sing the songs? i know he can sing, but it's not like he is playing any singer, this is mercury. at least we know he can grow the stache.

I thought Jamie Foxx did his own thing there?

Anyway, Sacha won't be singing, the film makers should not put that kind of pressure on the guy. To say that Freddie's voice was one of a kind is putting it quite mildly.

I do however have every faith in Cohen getting Freddie's mannerisms, talking voice, behaviour etc etc down to perfection.

I think the reason they won't be focusing on Freddie's death is because he pretty much kept himself out of the media glare for the last year or two of his life. Plus, I think the focus will be on depicting one of the greatest showmen of all time rather than on the reality of AIDS.

Nah, while Foxx does a mean Ray Charles impression, he was lip syncing in the film.

JP bakes cakes for Michael Fassbeneeehhhhh, man he's a damn good baker, that's indeeed~

There was a rumor floating around two to three years ago that Cohen would play Mercury in an upcoming bio-pic, but those rumors were put to rest by Cohen's representatives if I recall correctly. I remember being tremendously disappointed, because the choice seemed to be a stroke of genius. He's almost a dead ringer for Mercury, and I have a feeling that he could shine in a serious role.

I'm very, very glad this is going to happen.

Nothing special, was just bored & had 5 mins to spare while waiting for my mate to pick me up. So it's kinda rushed.

Queen was one of my first rock groups I ever got into as a kid. My musical taste has diversified, but I could never forget Queen. I've ehard their new stuff, with Paul Rogers and such, but it can never meet what Freddy brought to the stage.
Sufficient to say I will see this when it come sout. Not sure about the casting yet, but Cohen can act, so I'm open to it.

I'm loving this choice, I'm friggin' thrilled beyond belief.

Awesome manips, it looks to be perfect casting alright. I hope we get a trailer to the sound of Tie Your Mother Down. :awesome:

You know that Freddie was an awesome rock and roll singer and showman when people are doing MANIPS of Cohen as him!!

It's times like these the world seems like a pretty cool place.

I feel like punching somebody everytime somebody suggest a non-actor to play a singer. Its like suddenly people forget the difference between a musicvideo and a movie. Its like acting doesnt matter anymore.

he'll have to wear some fake teeth though to emulate freddie's look accurately.

Oh yeah for sure. Freddie had a very unique look. You'll notice much more watching Live Aid '85' that Freddie had this massive, almost masculine head, but this tiny, skinny, short frame. He was also only about 5'9, I believe & Cohen is like 6'3, but I believe if this biopic is given the proper respect they can do many tricks to further give the illusion that Cohen is Freddie visually. First, obviously fake teeth, easy enough, second, use camera tricks similar to Lord Of The Ring's to make Cohen seem 5'9 & last but not least a fake nose. Although Freddie & Cohen look similar, Freddie had a very Chris Reeve-like, pinched nose, cohen, not so much. & once that's done you just have to focus on the acting & I think Cohen has it in him with very little effort. That's my rant done.

A update for the film from Brian May and Roger Taylor.
http://www.queenonline.com/news/1948/

Peter Morgan has delivered a first draft of the movie, which everyone is very excited about, and Sacha Baron Cohen is chomping at the bit to get into the role, in a way which certainly would delight Freddie ! The whole team now working on preparing for a shoot later this year, and a release in the late Autumn of 2012.

Looking forward to this biopic and I'm anxious to see how Sacha will do as Freddy.

SO glad to see it seems to be on track! Cannot wait.

Please get a great director.

I love Queen. Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury sounds prefect to me. I wonder who they gonna cast as Roger, Brian and John.

Anyway I'm very excited to see this. :yay:

Stephen Frears Frontrunner To Direct Freddie Mercury Biopic
The "Hugo" team of producer Graham King and star Sacha Baron Cohen are moving forward on their next project, as "The Queen" helmer Stephen Frears has emerged as an early frontrunner to direct GK Films' untitled pic about Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, sources tell Variety. Insiders close to the project insist that several other filmmakers remain in the mix for the coveted gig, but Brit helmer Frears appears to have the inside track for the job, though negotiations have not yet begun.

The latest draft of the script comes from the writing team of Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson, who together penned "Ali" and "Nixon."

Baron Cohen's deal to play Mercury is expected to close in the coming weeks, which will see the release of the Brit thesp's next film, "The Dictator."

King and Tim Headington are producing the Freddie Mercury pic in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca Prods. and Queen Films.

Story focuses on Queen's formative years, leading up to the band's heralded appearance at Live Aid in 1985. Mercury died of complications from AIDS in 1991, though the film won't focus on the singer's last days.

Producers have already landed a music-rights package that includes Queen's biggest hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." It's the first time the surviving members of Queen have licensed songs and music publishing rights for a movie about the band. Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon formed Queen Films to be involved with the production, though it remains unclear whether Baron Cohen will perform the musical numbers himself.

Frears is an inspired choice and I hope negotiations can start soon, so this project can move forward.

I just want this to get made.
