Bohemian Rhapsody

How can it be a "breakthrough performance" when Malek's been working in fairly high profile projects for several years? He's had his own TV series.

I loved him in BR but I thought he 'broke through' a long time ago.

The biggest threat to Bradley is still Bale, IMO. Vice may be split on critics but everyone seems to love Bale in it. (I won't get to see it until Monday)

I really want Bale to get his 2nd Oscar (and having seen most of the contenders IMO he deserves it) but this will be down to Malek and Cooper with the former having the advantage of passion. People are VERY passionate about his performance and BR is killing it at the BO despite the critics pan and the Singer controversy. I’m actually thinking Malek will just sweep all the televised awards. Cooper apparently focused on campaigning for Director and that will cost him both (since Cuarón is deservingly getting the awards so far and now Malek has overshadowed him for Actor. Besides Bale, I would’ve preferred Viggo but it is what it is... If I have to bet, it’ll be on Rami taking all the gold.

Yeah, I don't think enough people are talking about Bale. I barely hear his name mentioned in terms of contention. I'd be surprised if he won but also pleased because he is a wonderful actor. I'm just not sure that's the role he should win an Oscar for. I don't even know when the film was/is being released in the UK. There's been no marketing at all.

In regards to Rami winning Best Breakthrough, I'm not 100% sure but is BH his first leading role in a movie of that scale? I'm not sure how they judge a "breakthrough performance". I think the same happened to Emma Stone a while back when she won a similar award even though she'd been around for years.

Bohemian Rhapsody is already at 700m before the turn of the year with no signs of slowing down. It's having all timer, legendary BO runs in Japan, South Korea, Italy and several other countries where Queen isn't even all that well known (not a pop culture phenomenon).

It's right nao 20th Century Fox's 12th in terms of WW numbers (behind Avatar, TPM, Ice Age 3, Ice Age 4, ROTS, ID97, DP, ANH, DOFP, DP2 & DOTPOTA) but BR is definitely crashing into the top 10 and will very likely land at the 9th spot considering it made close to 18m with estimates this past weekend from all the offshore territories.

When all is said and done, BR will be Fox's 4th highest grossing movie in International markets (will surpass TPM and rank behind Avatar, Ice Age 3 & 4). That's just freaking insane.

This was my post from last weekend. BR added 17m this weekend from all the OS markets. So it was basically flat even tho the holidays are over in many places.

BR will also very likely take down A New Hope & Deadpool in 20th Century Fox's all time world-wide chart at this rate to rank as the studio's 7th biggest film of all time.

It's a shame in a way that they ended the movie by saying Freddie passed away in 1991 as I'm sure it wouldn't have been difficult to have a sequel greenlit. They released so many great songs after 1985... and I'm sure there are more stories to tell. I suppose the risk is it might be edging a little too close to his death which isn't what the Queen members want to focus on.

Never underestimate the power of Queen. Every 10 years or so something happens with that band that reignites their music and legacy to people. I've seen a bunch of youtube reaction videos of people watching the Live Aid performance for the first time over the last 3-4 months, people in their early 20's be introduced to the music because of this film. Same thing happened to me 20 years ago with Wayne's World.

A proper MJ biopic should see good money...

If the movie wins some big awards, I'd say there's a good chance they'll seriously consider a sequel to talk about the rest of Freddie's life. They can't ignore the huge box office.

As for Michael Jackson, boy, that would be tricky. On the one had, he was an amazing talent and had a huge career, but on the other hand, there's no getting around how weird he got and how he basically turned into a super strange hermit who did some seriously odd things. And as was said, who could possibly play him?

I think that subject might best be left to documentaries that can use actual footage of Jackson.

How would they even try to tackle the kid stuff? Deny it? Portray it as true? Leave ambiguity? Any of those approaches are like a minefield.

So, Rami Malek won Best Actor- Drama for the film, and BR also got Best Picture! Pretty unexpected!

And if Freddie was still alive he would have expected nothing less, lol.

Also, here's the article where Brian May talks about a possible sequel to the later years.

Bohemian Rhapsody 2: Brian May teases possible SEQUEL from Live Aid to Freddie's death

The Freddie Mercury biopic was a box office smash, but could there be a sequel? Bohemian Rhapsody follows the late Queen singer’s early life up until Live Aid in 1985. At this point in the film, Freddie had told his fellow bandmates he was HIV positive. However, the film ended before his decline and ultimate death from AIDS in November 1991.

Now, in an interview with Classic Rock, Queen guitarist Brian May was asked if there was ever a temptation to go beyond Live Aid in 1985.

The 71-year-old replied: “No. I think there’s a natural culmination there.

“And that has pretty much always been the case, from the earliest scripts.

“We felt that was the pinnacle – despite what some people have said in the press, who know f***-all about it.”

A sequel could be set between 1985 and 1991, when Freddie died.
May continued: “Somebody, who shall be nameless, said: “Oh, they’re going to portray Freddie dying in the middle of the movie, and then the rest of it is gonna be about life without Freddie.

“Well, complete bulls***. This is all about Freddie, and I think Live Aid is a good point to leave it.”

Then he dropped the bombshell: “Who knows, there might be a sequel [laughs].”

With the box office success of Bohemian Rhapsody, it wouldn’t be a surprise if there was a sequel set between 1985-1991 in Freddie’s declining years.

I would not be surprised, considering how money this has made so far!

I really hate that I haven't seen this yet (and won't until I can see it without helping it financially). The love Queen is getting in 2018/2019 is incredible.

OH FOR ****'S SAKE, Internet! What the hell is WRONG with you? Let Fox have their goddamn win in peace.

'Bohemian Rhapsody' win causes controversy at Golden Globes over director Bryan Singer
Yeah it's not like Singer's departure wasn't already news. They're just rehashing it because the internet wanted Bradley and ASIB to sweep. So they're gonna try and demean the win by saying it made everyone in the room feel awkward.

I think it's commendable that Rami and co spoke up and got rid of Singer for his unprofessional behaviour. That was a bold move.

Expect more of these type of articles. Like it or not, maybe, just maybe, Queen's music and Freddie's legacy might very well be why this thing got over the line and why it might now have a genuine shot at Oscar Best Picture.

That, and ASIB 1. is a movie that's been remade to death and many of those versions are great so why should that version be emphasized just because Lady Gaga's popular? I love her music, but I'll just listen to one of her songs or albums if i wanted to instead of this, and 2. has a complete mood killer of an ending that wrecks the whole thing. Oh boo-hoo, Bradley Cooper's character kills himself and the audience is left feeling depressed. Who seriously WANTS that? If I wanted to watch a depressing musical, I'll watch Sweeney Todd! At least THERE that kind of tone makes sense.

Compare that to this movie which has a much more upbeat ending and a wonderful message about how family and friends will always be there to support you and you should never take them for granted. Not to mention that AMAZING Live Aid ending that just leaves you feeling wowed and happy (which apparently they filmed a full recreation of the entire 20-minute piece from real life that'll be on the Blu-Ray next month!). This movie deserves all the success it's getting right now IMO, both critically and financially (its now the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, btw). Screw ASIB.

Oh, you know, that and because it's a genuinely good movie. Snyder can go to hell regardless. Again, who the hell cases about that creep? Fox disowned him from this movie ages ago and never once mentioned him in marketing. Move on.

It seems fitting that Queen is the band who's movie is the number one music biopic. Only the Beatles could challenge it.

Agreed. Only a matter of time until we get a Beatles biopic. And, no, Nowhere Boy doesn't count.

Umm, wait for the Spice Girls spicebiopic to come out.
