Barbarella's back!

Drew Barrymore and writer John August (BIG FISH) tried to get a remake of BARBARELLA off the ground but were never successful. That, however, is not going to stop producer Dino De Laurentiis. He is starting fresh and has brought in Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (CASINO ROYALE) to write the script. De Laurentiis said he was impressed enough with Purvis and Wade's work on ROYALE to bring them in on BARBARELLA but didn't Paul Haggis write the majority of the shooting script? I'm confused. The upcoming remake will make Barbarella a "free, modern gal who survives in a futuristic world through her intelligence, fighting skills and sexuality." Jane Fonda starred in the original 1968 film and was considered quite taboo. Heck it featured an orgasmatron type torture device that could cause death by orgasm. The film was based on the French comic book created by Jean-Claude Forest. De Laurentiis will work next at securing a lead actress and likely won't align with a studio until afterwards.

Beckinsale-arella?

Even though writers were just brought on board for a remake of the sci-fi sex-o-rama BARBARELLA, the actress rumor mill has already been whirling like Jane Fonda disrobing in zero-gravity.

The latest lass rumored to be slipping into (and out of, one expects/hopes) the attire of the sexy interstellar agent is infinitely lovely Kate Beckinsale, no stranger to genre (and skintight) material herself. According to a Daily Express gossip source, Beckinsale is "among the frontrunners" for the part of the dishy spacefaring heroine who likes to shag.

Of course, despite the Daily Express' proclamation of being "The World's Greatest Newspaper", they're probably not worth a ****e as a source for valid movie news -- just two days ago they declared Brit babe Sienna Miller as "top of the wish list" for the BARBARELLA role (they also labeled her as "younger and cheaper", which seems accurate). I did, however, take advantage of an opportunity to use this photo of Beckinsale.

The libidinous antics of the 1968 kitsch classic will likely be downplayed for the update -- producer Dino de Laurentiis previously said the new BARBARELLA would be more of a "female James Bond in space", which is probably why he hired CASINO ROYALE scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (who also wrote the previous two 007 catastrophes).

Kate Beckinsale is set to star in a remake of erotic sci-fi classic 'Barbarella'.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale is set to star in a remake of 'Barbarella'.

Movie bosses think the British actress is a perfect choice to play the cult 60s heroine - a role made famous by Jane Fonda in the original 1968 erotic space adventure.

A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Jane Fonda made the 'Barbarella' role very much her own all those years ago and she is bound to be a tough act to follow.

"But the feeling is that Kate has just the right combination of beauty, humour and acting talent for the part."

Sienna Miller, Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry have also been linked to the role.

The script for the $124 million project will be written by Robert Wade and Neal Purvis, who penned 'Casino Royale'.

Peter Webber, whose credits include 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' and 'Hannibal Rising', is set to direct.

Producer Dino De Laurentiis said: "The reinvented heroine will be akin to a female James Bond - in outer space."

In the original film, Barbarella stripped naked before being taken to a mysterious planet where she battled her enemies and had several sexual experiences.

Beckinsale Denies Barbarella Talk
"Never heard anything about it," she says.
by Scott Collura

US, April 26, 2007 - Last week, the rumor mill was buzzing with talk that Underworld star Kate Beckinsale would be taking on the title role in producer Dino De Laurentiis's remake of his classic sexy sci-fi tale Barbarella. Of course, the fact that the info was coming from the British tabloid Daily Express didn't help to allay the doubts of those who have been burned by U.K. tabloids in the past. Now, Beckinsale herself has confirmed to IGN that no one has even approached her about the film.

"I just found out myself today," the actress said last week from the set of the currently shooting Whiteout. "It's thrilling! I've never heard anything about it before today. One of the [Whiteout] crewmembers told me."

The planned remake of the 1968 Jane Fonda starrer is being scripted by Casino Royale screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. In years past, Lindsay Lohan and Drew Barrymore have both been mentioned as being up for the role, but an "unnamed insider" told the Express last week that "the feeling is that Kate has just the right combination of beauty, humor, and acting talent for the part."

Too bad nobody told Kate that. Still, the actress joked with IGN that if she did take the role, it would require a name change.

"Beckinsale-arella!" she laughed. "It's gotta happen!"
