BOUGHT/THOUGHT for July 19, 2006

I noticed people saying Spider-Man not struggling with himself to not have to fight Cap and thought that was outta character for him. I dissagree with that, in AMS #187 he reacted the same way, but without the jokes to Cap. He had no hesitation in fighting Cap in that when he knew it was on. He even said he'd get the truth from Cap even if he had to rip it out of him. Him making jokes during the Civil War fight wasn't out of character either.

Okay, I don't know much about Daredevil's world, or Iron Fist's, or Hawkeye's, or Fury's...but reading CW#3, and how easy it seemed for Daredevil to go without his mask on, and how it wasn't surprising to anyone, or even set up to be a reveal for us readers...I got this odd feeling that what we see is some sort of disguise. And I'm not talking about the disguise the folks at the table were going over.

I couldn't help but to think something like "that's Nick Fury with some sort of hologram projection going over him to make him look like someone else". Or someone else that has access to such sophisticated technology.

Because, really...with how big the whole "Who is the new Daredevil" mystery that's going on right now, you KNOW that the first time we see his face is going to be a big reveal, not something that goes by without anyone blinking. And you KNOW it's going to be someone we instantly recognize.

So yeah, I don't know who it is, but I'm putting money down that says that the face we saw in CW#3 is not the real face of the new Daredevil...it's just another disguise.

Speaking of which, how ironic is it to read and watch that scene, to see all these heroes coming up with secret identities...in order to protect their OTHER secret identites?

Yeah it defnetly was, everyone else was in disguise after all.

Was the art in JLA 0 any good? Benes usually sucks. :(

yes it was very good with several artists from different eras of the JLA

After seeing the boughts, it looks like the Halo Hardcover didn't come out. Any word on the new release date for this book?

it did come out. I saw it but Im not a big Halo fan

dang, my comic shop still hasn't got any copies in yet. Hopefully, their order will be in soon.

Wow! I just finished reading Cable & Deadpool, and I do think this is the best single issue of the entire series. Especially after this book had gotten so dull of late, it finally took Deadpool at his corniest fighting both the GLC and the Secret Avengers and Cable at his most serious in talking with Captain America about the state of things to come following events that may stem from the Civil War to make this title shine. I cannot wait for the next issue, as this has the possiblity as being the best tie-in issue of Civil War to come out.

Civil War: X-Men #1
Gets an honorable mention because I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Decimation was crap. O*N*E was crap. I've disliked or at the least felt unsettled about almost all of that fascist Sentinel crap from the very first day. Unfortunately, "fascist Sentinel crap" is once again in full-swing during this issue; we've still got military nonsense overrunning the X-mansion and bigotted human commanders spout not-very-subtle bigotry while everyone else just shrugs. One of the many reasons that I've been so thankful of Astonishing X-Men is that Whedon at least hasn't had to cave to these blatantly outdated plotlines.

On the other hand...there's a lot of good things about this book too. The most significant of which is that for once, the X-Men aren't going to nod politely and smile in the face of such oppression. Ever since House of M, the amount of kowtowing that the X-Men -- these supposed champions of the downtrodden -- have been doing towards the O*N*E squad coming into their home and telling them how things are going to be done has just been completely sickening. Oh sure, members of the Uncanny team have been trying to go behind their backs and pulling little pranks or whatever, but there's never been any doubt as to who exactly was in charge. Now, at long last, the X-Men have decided to grow some balls and are directly and significantly opposing the orders of the O*N*E. Better late than never I say, and the fact that it's the original X-Men pulling this coup is very satisfying.

I would feel a bit more ambivalent about Bishop all of a sudden being a O*N*E lackey except that, well, it wasn't very all of a sudden at all. It's sort of been building up in the Uncanny title, wherein Bishop has been far more accomodating to Valerie and her team's needs and far more understanding of their mission than pretty much everyone else in the mansion. Buffy alone knows what that mission is, 'cause I don't, and so far no writer seems to know either, but that's beside the point;). The point is that as of the last few years of Marvel -- and the X-books in particular -- storylines actually having a build-up and characterizations actually having progress and fruition has been depressingly rare, and to see it here is a good thing. I mean, him throwing a temper tantrum at Scott for making a perfectly valid and legitimate decision -- the X-Men not wanting to risk innocent lives, what a concept! -- and accusing Scott of losing his way is a mighty *****ebag moment, but we can...sort of...see where it's coming from. I guess.

Also for once, Iron Man was written as understanding and sympathetic instead of just a big manipulative dick. Sure, he was still a bit of a dick, no I still don't agree with a single word of his reactionary ideals (that he himself doesn't really believe in but is following because he doesn't think he other side can win), but poor Tony's been painted pretty much into the antagonist in these last few months and it's nice to see him act like a good guy for a change.

Also of the good: Bobby Drake didn't have much to do in this, but this is one of two books within the last few weeks in which he didn't make me cringe with irritation every time he appeared on-panel, the other of which is the Adjectiveless title...and that's a very, very good thing indeed, if Iceman can be redeemed a bit after all the crap he's gone through from the various...less than capable writers who have handled him.

Also: Leather outfits = hell to the yes. Anything evoking Morrison's era, I'm all for.

It's weird that of all the Archangel appearances lately, he's been showing up without a costume. It's weird because Archangel does have an official costume, he's had it ever since Excalibur. Did everyone just forget about it or something? Not that I necessarily mind Warren showing up at every emergency in his shirtless skivvies, but hey...

SIAT's funkalicious week of comics! 7/19/06

Overall, a decent week. A disappointment. A bright spot for a book I thought was losing steam. And Civil War continues to impress me.

FLASH # 2 -- The artist needs changed. Now. Immediately. Like, right this second DC. And the writer needs to slow down a little bit. He jumps all over the place from one thing to the other with absolutely no transition in it. It's not that BAD of a story, but sweet Jesus it's all jumbled it a hiccup of plot. Would be nice to get some info on how WALLY WEST is doing, or for that matter, where he's at. I'm giving this a couple more issues and if I don't see any type of breath in this title, it's gone. I don't have time to waste anymore. :( 6/10

BATTLE FOR BLUDHAVEN # 6 OF 6 -- Ok. This was a nice miniseries from the fallout of Infinite Crisis. But Sweet lord of the comic Gods...can I please have a miniseries that actually has some type of ENDING to it instead of sucking me into MORE miniseries? Well, the good news is I'm not being sucked in. I refuse to be. And another piece of good news? Captain Atom owned and seeing now that Bludhaven is nothing but a crater now...well, it makes things very interesting and some things fall into better perspective. Though the ending with the President really had a ring of Marvel's "Civil War" storyline. I hope DC doesn't try and rip them off. 7/10

ROBIN # 152 -- I wasn't really enjoying the direction this comic was going. I'm not one of the Bat-fans who was all upset over Batgirl being evil now, but it just seemed like Robin was being destined to turn out like Nightwing. However, with the implementation of The Joker planting a nuclear bomb in one of his old hideouts, one that still stands, and the new Captain Boomerang has finally caught up to Tim, and realizes they might need to team up to take care of this "bomb", makes things enter a different view. This was a good issue and a nice step in the right direction. And a pretty nice moment between Bruce and Tim...plus Tim had some sparks with his tutor. Hope that it gets kept up. 8/10

FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN # 10 -- The conclusion to Jumping the Tracks. Not many Spider fans liked this storyline, Spider fans don't really like much AT ALL Spider-Man these days. But I found some enjoyment out of this storyline. It was a fun break from all the unmasking hype and madness and introduced some different views of the world of Spider-Man. The most interesting part was Hobgoblin of 2211 stating that Spider-Man had six junctions, or ripples, through his timeline which have an endless amount of possibilities and could be changed. Hobby stated that Uncle Ben's death and Gwen Stacy's death were one of them. I wonder what the other four could be. I suppose Mr. David left it up to the reader to decide what four things could it possibly be. I know for sure one has to be the marriage to Mary Jane, ha. :p But a fun story, with a very shocking ending involving the alternate reality Uncle Ben. If you wanna know what it is, read the book. 7.5/10

SHE-HULK # 9 -- Fantastic issue all around. Pug catching on to Zix, breaking into his files to show She-Hulk that Starfox did something to them, or at least he wants to see that. Interesting touch with Ditto, heh. And JJJ's insane reactions had me cracking up. And not to mention the marriage, the return of the Spider--er She-Hulk slayer, and the ownage of Mark Millar's Marvel Knights run, haha. Oh, man does Slott know how to dig them in the right places. Plus, a lot of Spider-Man fans should be happy to know that JJJ is gonna sue Peter Parker, and take the Iron Spidey suit from him, hahaha. One of the more entertain issues of the week. 9.5/10

ETERNALS # 2 -- No! Ikaris can't be dead! He just can't be! He's my favorite so far and if he's dead then...well, I'm just going to be upset that he's dead but keep reading. But it's interesting that Marrakis is getting his powers back and none of the other Eternals seem to be noticing, well except for Sersi and Marrakis having that mental contact. But Gaiman and Romita definitely have heated it up with this issue and next month can't come any sooner. 9/10

RUNAWAYS # 18 -- Oh man. SWERVE!! Nico didn't die. It was Xavin posing as Nico. Nice move! And the more insane move? That Gert was the Runaway who bit the dust! That's craziness and I WAS NOT expecting that. Though the ending with Chase on the hilltop with Old Lace, the book, and the translation ring has got ME thinking. Definitely a great swerve by BKV, in my opinion. Makes me wonder how the future Gert was able to come back and warn the Runaways to begin with...seeing as she died before that happened. Damn time paradoxes! I look forward to what's on the horizon, though I'll be skipping the Runaways/Young Avengers book...to me the Runaways are the Young Avengers. 9/10

52 WEEK 11 -- Focused on Dibny searching more for the Cult of Conner and Montoya/Question storyline. These two story lines are my favorite of this maxiseries. While I was enjoying everything about this issue, the Batwoman thing just seems kind of stupid to me. It's almost forced on us a little too much. Montoya seemed to figure out who it was in like five seconds, at least that's what I got from the issue, if she didn't than she's stupid. I'm guessing the Question already knows as well. But the Batwoman was really the only disappointment. Forced, and, honestly, a little unnecessary. However, Ralph may have his wife back. 8/10

CIVIL WAR # 3 -- Very interesting issue in this mini. I think it's so amazingly ironic that the rebel heroes resort back to civilian/hidden identities...while Peter Parker, who kept his identity secret longer than anyone, is out. Just pretty interesting to me. And the trap set by Stark was interesting, and Cap certainly took a nice dig at Spider-Man in this issue, I'm sure many of the unmasking haters would dig that line. But I'm wondering when the villains are going to strike, seeing that the heroes are all battling one another in this absolute cluster of madness. And through it all, Thor returns and it looks like he's on the pro-registration side of things...or making it seem that way for the time being. I really hope that Thor and Spider-Man change their minds soon, it was tough seeing Spidey taking on Cap there. But so far, this has been meeting my expectations and I REALLY hope they don't drop the ball...everything has been handled well for once. 8.5/10

Civil War Daily Bugle Special... I've just thumbed through most of it, but it was refreshing to see some good continuity references. And FINALLY, after all these years of not knowing his name, we get to see the name of the guard that was chasing the burglar when Spider-Man could have stopped him... Baxter Bigelow. Now THAT's going to be an awesome Spidey Trivia question some day. 9/10
I thought it was very cool that the gaurd has the same letter for his first and last name. That was a nice touch. ;)

Also, about Spidey fighting DD. Manofbat is right of course, but Spidey also knows that isn't really Matt.

I tracked down an issue of The Escapist #1. Great read.

Just dropping in to say that the cover to Runaways #18 is probably the best I've ever seen from Marvel. Flawless.

I agree, its a great cover. A great opposite to the story inside. Truth be told, RUNAWAYS is a title that has had so many great covers, and this is definately one of 'em.

I got Cable & Deadpool #30, and I must say, that was one funny read. :)

I just wanna know who came up with the concept. I'd guess it'd be Vaughan, because he rules like that, but it could have been the artist (I don't know his/her name, unfortunately :()
It's just so damn poignant.
