Maybe you should, but it's about context. You're not saying homo as a classification, you're using homo to demean and insult. Hence, why in your case, it's a slur. Either way, homo is a terrible way to describe someone as it does have a negative connotation either way. "hey, you a homo?" You seriously can't see why that sounds wrong? It's the same thing as calling a black man "colored".
