Box Office 2015

Or the quality wasn't as good as the first...

I think there were a couple of things going on. If a movie hits it big, I think it's pretty common for the sequel to lag a little bit. The reason a movie hits it as big as the first Avengers movie is that everything lines up. Good script, cast, directing, advertising, acting, cinematography, etc. It's double tough to get everything to line up like that twice in a row. I also think that more people thought the first one was better than the sequel (AoU). I personally did not and thought the character development was much more interesting in AoU.

There's only 1 first time and there is some charm to that. If people want to call that fatigue, that's their business. I'll just disagree with them. IW is going to do very, very well.

Man, it's going to be a fascinating couple of years. The Top 10 spots consist of:

- James Cameron
- Jurassic Park
- Star Wars
- Batman
- Avengers

So many movies could reach the top in 5 years.

Jurassic World 2
Rogue One
Episode 8
Episode 9
Han Solo
BvS
Solo Batman
Justice League
Avatar 2
Avatar 3
Avatar 4
CA: Civil War
Infinity War Part I
Infinity War Part II

Everybody sit back with a cocktail and enjoy the show.

Unbelievable that that Avengers isn't in the top 4 movies of the year with a 1.4b take. That is mind blowing.

Now if Hollywood could cut half off the budgets and make the same dough, they'll be doing alright.

These rumors about breaking even with a billion-dollar box office gross is kind of insane. They're doing something wrong. Obviously.

I'm not sure why these movies can't cost $100 million to make, especially if they're scaling back on the effects and focusing on story.

TFA, for example, seemed minimalist compared to the prequels, to be honest.

Location shooting cost a lot. Same with building a lot of practical effects.

The general rule of thumb is 2.5 x the production budget worldwide to break even. So even something expensive like Avengers Age of Ultron with a $250 million budget would only need about $625 million worldwide to break even as opposed to a billion.

Well, if the production budget is $250 million, you can bet the total cost including marketing and stuff is s lot more than that. I seriously doubt the studios ever reveal every dollar they spend on movies, especially big budget ones. The real costs for the most expensive movies today is probably more like $300-400 million. And making $625 million worldwide... you have to remember not every dollar goes back to the studios. I think they get about half of the domestic money, around 40-45% from international markets and around 20-25% from China.

Bring it on, I say. Star Wars felt so much more tactile. I was thinking they took CG to another lesson but after watching the movie I found out a lot of the effects were practical. It shows. There are a couple of CG characters and they stand out mile.

It's weird how history repeats. In 2003 we saw the second movie to reach one billion worldwide, six years after the first one. Now it seems very likely we will see the second movie to reach two billion six years after the first one.

Things cost what they cost. If someone doesn't hit their projected revenue and loses money, I'm sure not going to lose any sleep over it. My guess is that Disney, Universal, etc. are doing just fine.

What a great time to be a fantasy/sci-fi/comic book fan. :woo::woo:

A misquote attributed to Sen. Everett Dirksen (R- Ill)

"A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon, you're talking real money"

And JL2!! ;)

And I'm going on record as saying I still think these $200+ million predictions are insane. Given the way it's shaping up, I bet that it falls short of JW'S opening weekend record but still does great numbers.

:pal:

:atatdr:r2: :tmm:

Did anybody seriously think that, barring worries that Star Wars would harken back to the prequels?
Well AoU was suppose to be the #1 movie of the year, it being more relevant and all. Now it isn't even top 3. :hehe:

That's what happens when world currency moves completely off the gold standard.
