Box Office 2015

at the time of the deal, Im not so sure

Yeah, it wasn't a guarantee that a new Star Wars film would have made a billion. The franchise could have fallen flat on its ass thanks to the less than stellar reception to the prequels, but thanks to creative minds like Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, it didn't. Once Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher signed on, that's when everyone started to believe that this was going to be huge.

they needed Lucas to get the old actors back.

I don't believe that for a hot minute

I think Kathleen Kennedy (Lucas' longtime partner) and Abrams made that happen, it probably took a bit longer in convincing that things were going to be better, but Lucas was kept on as a consultant as a courtesy

if this is true than Lucas made a bad deal. because LucasFilm was worth more. and i am not saying this because today SW made 1 billion.

Yeah, it is the reason why I took him at his word when he said it was mainly about retiring and leaving things in good hands. Disney got EVERYTHNG.

I don't know if it was brought up in this thread, but another poster pointed out that Lucas received 2 billion worth of Disney stock. I don't think Lucas got a terrible deal if that's the case. I'd say it's a pretty damn good deal in that case.

he made out great, anyone thinking it was a bad deal or Disney underpaid is soft in the head and doesn't understand how market value works

sure it's easy to say NOW how Disney underpaid because TFA has already pulled in a BILLION dollars in just about a week, but when this deal was done in 2012, Star Wars only had Clone Wars going, Dark Horse was doing the comics, and the last of the EU novels were out there but there was nothing bringing in any SERIOUS revenue

hell even if Disney didn't produce any new films, buying Lucasfilm was an investment move, they were going to make their money back sooner rather than later

lucas didn't take it all upfront, if he had it would no doubt been a larger lump sum. From what I read it was 4 bill and a good amount of stock(stock he himself is actively raising the value of with what he sold). I heard all things accumulated he's at about 6 billion right now(not simply the 4bill up front).

In 10 - 20 years who knows what the value of his trade will be.

The taking of a tiger to mountain is a very good movie that's why it achieved top in the year 2015

I'm honestly really curious to see how The Revenant fares at the box office next week. Then again, I guess that could just be a "Box Office 2016" topic.

Considering it has its world premiere in 2015 it will appear on the 2015 chart, even if it makes most of its money in 2016

The bootleg had over 100k downloads the last time I checked.

Then there are the ones over at the IMDb 'Force Awakens' board who are claiming that Disney's "cooking the books" and lying about how much money TFA is making so that it looks like it's a much bigger hit than it is. I don't think they know how this all works...

I have heard many the hilarious tale about that realm. One day I may actually have to visit, just to see for myself. :o

Oh, I'm serious. That's not even the craziest thing I've seen over there.

The IMDb TFA board is basically overrun with posters who just want to pick fights and post all sorts of negative stuff about how much they hate the movie and how terrible it is and how anybody who likes it is a braindead fanboy and how Disney paid off the critics to make sure it'd get good reviews, etc. etc. etc.

They also post spoilers in their thread titles. The board isn't moderated so it's a free for all.

It's entertaining as long as you don't actually try to reason with the posters who clearly just want to argue.

Too be fair, there has been a few instances of weird shenanigans. But, they are quickly caught, as the distributors are not the only source of such info. I remember some debate about Age of Extinctions opening weekend. And with the amounts we are seeing, such a large discrepancy would be tough to miss.

Here's the question: Can TFA make another $161 million domestically? That's my concern. But it's got another what, 3 months in theaters? 4 months? It could make $5 million a day from here on out and still reach it.

It'll have made a big chunk of that at the end of this weekend.

One way to look at it is that the second weekend of TFA lands between the opening weekends for Spider-Man 3 and Furious 7. Those made around 336 and 353 million in total. So it's not unreasonable TFA will add at least another 350 million after the first week's 391 million. And with the legs it has shown so far it is probably more likely it will be over 400 million, or even 500 million.

So it'll do a billion domestically?

Man, wouldn't that be something?

Yeah, it is entirely possible for it to have a third $100 million weekend. Looking at how it has been close to $30 all this week, this is kind of insane.
