Box Office 2016

Why you should never underestimate Disney Animation:

THURSDAY AM UPDATE: Moana exceeded last night's estimated Wednesday opening day, delivering a record-breaking pre-Thanksgiving opening day with an estimated $15.6 million, topping the previous record of $15.1 million set by Frozen before it went on to it's current five-day Thanksgiving weekend record opening of $93.5 million. At this point, industry sources are anticipating a possible new record for Moana, which could total as much as $94 million over the film's first five days of release.

Disney is probably going to finish the year with the top 6.

At first I thought it was definitely going to surpass Suicide Squad but I guess I overhyped it. Now it didn't outright bomb but it certainly didn't pull in the huge domestic numbers previous installments did, worldwide seems to be doing fine. I guess we'll see how well it holds over the next few weekends to know for sure though.

DC remains WB's biggest cash cow. Doesn't surprise me honestly because us fans have been saying for years that WB was just sitting on a goldmine.
Not a lot of cash in those cows. :funny:

873 million and 745 million (without China) isn't a lot of cash? Movie studios not named Disney would have killed to have their movies make that kind of money.

Exactly.

In the world of billion dollar yearly earners, yeah, those aren't close to big. The Fast Series, Jurassic World, the Minions. They all make plenty of money and cost less.

Disney is the other Studio rivaling those numbers this year
They had a movie about animated Pets beat both of those.

It's big enough for WB considering they only have one blockbuster Franchise so far.

It actually isn't a lot of cash. At least not for Batman v Superman with the insane budget that movie had.

Reminder: Back in January people who said that BvS would have a hard time cracking 1 billion at the BO were dismissed as morons.

I'd argue that was the right call at the time. WB seemingly agreed given how much they spent.

Success regardless of negative spin.

Nope, I (and Marvin too) wasn't a moron. I was right and correct in my optimistic assessment that the movie would need to be somewhat good to crack 1 billion.

We're in a comic book bubble here. We think these characters are gods. They're not gods. Batman and Superman are, imo, a level (or two levels?) below star wars in terms of being able to print money.

I should clarify, I don't think you were a "moron" for going against the grain. I don't agree with that wording. But I do stand by my assessment that, at the time, a decent Batman v Superman movie was a shoe-in for a billion.

The real problem is that we did not get a decent Batman v Superman movie. Not even close. Clearly this is all subjective, and I don't care to get into another BvS debate, but given the circumstances it is undeniable that audiences agree with me. WB/DC churned out a genuine misfire that still managed to make nearly 900 million WW. That alone proves my point that a half-decent BvS would have grossed over a billion - just look at that second weekend drop against zero competition.

Success compared to who? Because again, your big franchises should be doing a billion, no problem. Something TDK and TDKR did without 3D.

Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them had an opening day of $11.2M in China, besting Disney’s animated musical Moana, the studio says, by five times the gross. With China’s tally added in, Friday morning will see the film push past the $200M mark as its cume through Thursday is $199.3M. The studio’s J.K. Rowling adaptation got its coveted China date last month. Stateside, Fantastic Beasts is behind opener Moana this weekend. It’s in its second weekend and in about 270 more theaters than the Disney film.

Best of all: No intention to do a sequel to it. Let's hope Disney sticks to that plan. I may not mind seeing any of survivors in future stories but not sequels.
