China Beats The U.S. Box-Office In February

A combination of the Lunar New Year holiday and one particular massive local blockbuster pushed the monthly box office in China to a record high in February, surpassing North America for the second time in history.
Chinese cinemas took in $1.05 billion in February, a 50% increase over the same period last year, whereas the U.S. box-office is coming in at just short of $800 million. Currently the world's second-biggest theatrical market, China is closing the gap with North America and if the current rates of growth keep up it will become the world's largest film market in early 2017.
The Chinese box-office was massively helped by Stephen Chow's fish-out-of-water rom-com "The Mermaid" which generated a whopping $485 million over three weeks in February. The fantasy sequel "The Monkey King 2," was also a big contributor - earning $178.1 million over three weeks, while Wong Jin's comedy-action gambling sequel "From Vegas to Macau 3" made $167 million.

I'm looking at what their film has made in total, not just in China. A worldwide gross of 500+ million is amazing. I just hope this blockbuster of their is better than Monkey King and Monster hunt.

"Dawn of Justice" Needs To Make $800M?

The stakes are high for Warner Bros. Pictures with the release of Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". Spearheading a new cinematic universe based on DC Comics, an initiative that needs to work in the wake of a troubled 2015 at the box-office for the studio, the pressure is on for the film to deliver.
In a new piece in Variety, the amount it has to deliver has been quantified. The trade says the film's cost come in at a $250 million production budget combined with a further $150 million for all the film's marketing, advertising and promotions . This means the film would have to gross around $800 million worldwide to recoup its investment (studios get back around half the box-office take). It's a quite doable number considering "Man of Steel" made around $660 million worldwide.
Of course that figure doesn't take into account TV, merchandising and other forms of revenue, while studio insiders tell the trade that figure is inflated. Tracking remains very strong on the film which is heading toward a $350 million worldwide opening weekend. One week out and reviews are still yet to come, and probably won't until right before release.
More promotional elements from the film have also gone up today including a new clip from the film and a new featurette which teases the film's story. Also, over on Instagram, a video has been posted to star Henry Cavill's social media account which shows that even decked out in a Superman costume next to a giant billboard of himself in Times Square, no-one seems to recognise him

Eh, I'd take that with a grain of salt. Commentators always forget that most of the marketing budget is funny money. A contract saying you provided 10M in considerations is not the same thing as an actual check for 10M.

I wouldn't be surprised if execs inside WB would consider the movie coming in under 800M as a disaster, mind. It just wouldn't be because the movie fails to turn a profit, but because its vastly below their forecasts and expectations ( and thus bodes ill for the entire franchise ).

The Divergent Series: Ascendant better hightail it from June 2017 to April 2017.

A disappointing opening weekend of $29 million is expected, well down from the $54 and $52 million the previous films made in their opening weekends.

The fourth Divergent film will do even worse up against The Mummy reboot and World War Z II.

With the Divergent series hitting its lowest numbers yet, I'm really curious as to how Lionsgate is going to attempt to salvage this. If they don't change the fourth films' date, then they really don't give a damn about this franchise.

They did change the 4th film's release date. They decided to give the Power Rangers franchise a chance to shine in March and dumped Ascendant into a competitive June. Lions Gate knows that the series is ****ed, nobody cares about it.

And Zootopia passes The Mermaid for the #2 spot of 2016 on the WW charts. Next up: Deadpool...though by the time Zootopia beats DP it's still likely just to stay in 2nd place as BvS will likely have gone passed it for the #1 spot. But then again, maybe not.

Yeah, the Maze Runner series is actually the bigger success story than the Detergent series even though the latter is bigger here in North America. TMR's films typically cost around $50m less per film and still end up beating the Detergent films when it comes to their WW box office.

Typical Hollywood mentality, though....consistently increase the budget of the subsequent movies as if their success is a sure thing. Here, though, they ignored from the get-go that this franchise wouldn't ever reach those heights. Yet and still they went forward with the most foolish approach possible.

Good thing, Fox's Maze Runner isn't following the Part 1/Part 2 trend. And like Hp7/HG3/Twilight4.... Divergent film #3 is the worst reviwed film to date.

I haven't seen the Divergent films but I might one day, once all four films are in the sales discount bin.

BvS opened with the 4th best single/opening day: $82,010,000. Just a couple million short of Age of Ultron's $84.4 M but slightly above Jurassic World's $81,953,950 and The Avenger's $80,813,985.

Cyborg is slotted in April 3, 2020 as April 10 brings it closer to Marvel's untitled May 1 film. Still, that's 3 weekends before any superhero competition, go for Easter Weekend. I'm sure some film will find a home there as Easter Weekend has quite quickly become a desirable and valuable weekend.
