Box Office 2016

Yeah, Batman and Iron man pretty much ensured an increase from Cap 2 and Man of Steel.

However, BvS was expected to do better box office wise and Cap 3 earned less than Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Cap 3 works as a sequel for those films as well.

The Purge: Election Year just opened $1 million more than The Purge 2, $30.8 mil vs. $29.8 mil. That's down from the first Purge film which opened with $34 million. Purge 2 did gross the most in the series domestically at $71 mil. We'll see if this has any legs.

Isn't civil war about to pass IM3 domestically soon?
And anyway, another thing to think about is that most of those movies were not regarded as being as good or better than their predecessors. The only ones in that ballpark would be dory and civil war. And the box office shows that people respond to quality follow ups like those two. (I thought 10 Cloverfield lane was much better than the first, though it doesn't have the same mass appeal)

I think calling it 10 Cloverfield Lane was it's downfall. I think it wouldve been way better received by audiences and wouldve made more money if it didn't have the Cloverfield name or that loose tie in

I guess I'm mixed on if it would've done better with a different name. On one hand, the cloverfield name does generate interest. On the other, it made many people expect a movie that was much different from what we got.

Civil War earnings are fine they have a good number the rest of sequels this year however is a different story

What do you guys think Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is gonna do.

THe premise is funny and I was excited for it, but then I saw Dirty Grandpa. And it looks like Aubrey Plaza is playing the exact same character, except maybe worse, in Mike and Dave. I can't see it getting a good reception from people

But i don't think that hurt the film in the long run, as i haven't seen anyone that was disappointed with what the film ended up being.

Then you gotta look around. Ive head/seen plenty of peope disappointed by the 10 Cloverfield lane ending.

How is Deadpool still making money?

Secret life of Pets has an 39M opening-Friday (including 5.3M Thursday preview), heading to a 100M+ OW (RIP Inside Out's original movie OW record). If it has a 3X multiplier (which all animations have) then it'll be the 7th movie crossing 300M in 2016.

This year is also a break out year of animation (Dory, Zootopia, Pets and Moana later this year). 6 biggest animations this year (the previous 4 and either Kung Fu Panda 3, Ice Age 5, Sing, Stork, Trolls) might have higher DOM BO than the 6 biggest CBM this year.

Plus Illumination is on course to be the new Pixar and adds more competition to the genre.

Nice to be reminded again that Disney does not hold a monopoly in the animation genre Competition is always good. Hope Universal makes Dreamworks Animation a Boxoffice force again.

Many say it was the weakest part of the film, but most people that saw it were still very impressed overall. It wasn't exactly the expectation of seeing connections to the previous film that seemed to have made people end up disappointed, but the slightly different tone of the ending, when compared to what came before.

I just saw secret life of pets, and Illumination is not even close to as good as Pixar. That was not a good movie.

Apparently a lot of others may disagree with you. This one is looking to be a juggernaut, undoubtedly a larger one than anyone initially surmised.

This has been a weird box office year, to say the least. Pets looked really safe and unremarkable so I didn't expect much from it. Of course, a big part is keeping budgets smart; it's not a great looking movie, but for 75 million it's perfectly fine.

The mainstream animated market has been on the rise, especially if something like Minions can crack a billion. Illumination so far has been relying on cuteness and comedy, marketed the **** out of The Secret Life of Pets and were definitely going for a pets edit of "Toy Story".

The audience was loving it. People were laughing out loud at every joke. I don't like the Minions either, so I guess this humor style just isn't for me. lol
In my opinion, secret life of pets didn't have a lot to offer for adults. When you see a Pixar movie (or even some Dreamworks movies) it really gives a lot of emotion and story goodness for adults to chew on, that children may not understand. I didn't really get any of that from this movie.

Because of the premise, being almost like a bottle episode, I'd doubt it would a significantly more without the Cloverfield connection.

Either way, it made it a profit and was well liked, so it won.
