Brett Ratner to direct CONAN..?

That's the thing though. Ratner makes mediocre versions of what should be better movies.

See Red Dragon and X-men 3 compared to Man Hunter and X-men 1/2. I mean, him doing Conan, ugh.

Thing is, Ratner I think deep down wants to be one of these all time great directors like Spielberg, Scorcese, Soderbergh, etc. but he never will be. He's the definition mainstream directing hack IMHO. I mean those guys do a heist movie, and Ratner does After The Sunset. Someone does The Bourne Ultimatum, and Rat does Rush Hour 3 and exclaims it to be a VERY REAL THRILLER.

Good news = Rat does not do God of War movie.

Spot-on summation of Ratner, Vile. It's like he's desperate for validity or something.

Sure, just like X-Men 3, Conan will probably look cool at times and have some exciting visuals but will ultimately just be pretty superficial and generally lacking in substance; looking good means nothing if there's not something behind it.

Seriously, a Ratner directed Conan will probably end up being less memorable than Kevin Sorbo's Kull the Conqueror. :csad:

If, like the original, they hire a musclebound monster to play Conan and give him 7 lines of dialogue. It could work well again. Fingers crossed. Hopefully Ratner isn't in X-Men 3 mode.

After reading up on Terminator Salvation, I'm willing to bet that Roland Kickinger gets cast in the lead role.

It just seems so abvious; 'how can we get someone like Arnold who isnt Arnold?'

Ratner doesn't have "modes". This is going to turn out the same as every other movie he has done - serviceable commercial fluff.

^ I could only see the preview to that vid.. scary

Please for the love of God, hire a REAL actor to play Conan.

What I tell you, the guy's got a ridiculously huge ego. Didn't he once say that he was born to direct Superman or X-men? I definitely recall him saying that about himself when he was attached to Superman.

I'm just glad, at least for the moment, that he's no longer attached to this movie.

Yep!

Ratner Says Conan Announcement Was Premature
Source:Los Angeles Times
November 12, 2008

Remember Sunday's night's announcement that Brett Ratner was committed to direct the Conan movie? Not so fast, says Ratner. Turns out, Millennium Films' Avi Lerner sent the announcement that Ratner was attached to the project prematurely to The Hollywood Reporter. Ratner spoke to the Los Angeles Times:

Lerner acknowledged that even though he sent out a press release announcing Ratner's involvement with the project, the deal wasn't actually done. "We still have a few obstacles," he said. "Brett is only committed if we agree on a budget, on how to do the special effects and exactly where we'd shoot the film." Lerner has a studio in Bulgaria, so he'd like to shoot most of the movie there, with some exterior work in China.

But is Ratner actually committed to doing the film? In two words: Not really. When I called him today, he sounded somewhat agitated, unhappy that news of his negotiations with Lerner had surfaced, especially since he is extremely close to getting a green light from Paramount to make "Beverly Hills Cop 4." "Let me make this very clear," he told me. "I am not doing 'Conan' now. This is totally premature. For now, 'Conan' is only a development deal. I have a deal at Paramount and I'm doing 'Beverly Hills Cop' first, no matter what. Avi shouldn't be telling you or anyone else in the press what I'm doing."

You can read more on what happened, and what Lerner's plans are for the Conan movie here.

best news ever. Hopefully he gets the greenlight for Beverly Hills Cop, forcing the Conan people to get a new, much better, and much more deserving director than Brett Ratner.

Also, is it me, or does Ratner come off as a huge *****e in that quote of his? Most directors and actors, in this situation just smile and play it off. He seems like a total *****e. Not a good way to handle it at all.

anyone, even *****ebags like Ratner.

I swear, he is the word *****ebag personified.

I hope Ratner does direct Beverly Hills Crap 4; that's a series that should have ended at part 2. Let him beat that dead horse all he wants and give Conan, a series that (with a talented director) could actually be a great fantasy epic and left the Schwarzeneggar films in the dust.

I still love those movies, but they're very cheesy. Still, I suppose for the time, they were pretty good.

EXCLUSIVE: Brett Ratner Dishes On ‘Conan’ Casting, Says Star Should Be ‘An Unknown’
Published by Casey Seijas on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 4:47 pm.

'Conan'When last we heard from the “Conan” revamp camp, director Brett Ratner was adamantly dismissing rumors that he’d signed on to direct a “Conan” remake, saying the “Conan” news was premature and his next project would be “Beverly Hills Cop 4.”

However, he’s certainly not denying his desire to take on Cimmeria’s resident berzerker in a big screen update. In fact, the director behind “X-Men: The Last Stand” already has ideas on how he’d handle casting.

“I believe it should be an unknown,” Ratner hinted to MTV News. “Conan is kind of iconic. It’s kind of like when you do Superman.”

“Growing up, my favorite comic book was ‘Conan,’” added Ratner. “[It] was the first comic book I ever read.”

However, Ratner is well aware that taking the reins on an all-new “Conan” project is a task worthy of the barbarian himself. After all, the original series of films hold a special place in fanyboy’s hearts, and replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role is darn-near sacrilege. But Ratner, ever the optimist, believes the time is right for “Conan” to pillage the local multiplex once again.

“Look, it’s difficult to fill those shoes,” insisted Ratner, “But they came up with a new Batman, they came up with a new James Bond, you know?”

Do you think Ratner will be a good fit for “Conan?” Who would you cast in the lead role? Let’s hear it in the comments, readers!

I hope they go with someone who looks the part and can act. Arnold was good for the Sword and Sorcery movie that had the name Conan, but that wasn't the Conan. The books describe a vastly different character. I would think that the fanboys who are fans of the book wouldn't mind a recasting and something more true to REH one bit.

Sounds like you don't know the real character at all. Arnie's version is was what introduced me to the character (much like Lou with the Hulk), but after reading the books and Dark Horse GN, you will realize there is so much more can be done with the character. Arnalds Conan was pracically mute compared to the real deal, but I don't want to see the part played by someone steroid gorilla like HHH, and I don't want some skinny a$$ former TV actor playing the part in a bad wig either.

And when the hell is ratner being taken off this project, dammit? Isn't Rush Hour 5 due?

Conan the Barbarian still holds up well IMO. Destroyer is the only one of the two films that bleeds yellow cheese.

Hope to GOD Ratner doesnt direct this, if he does, I am simply not seeing it.

Zack Snyder told in a watchmen interview for the french mag mad movie, that he is very interested in Conan, and that he is very surprised, that the production didn't contact him.

Thoughts?

Well, gore and nudity wise, the fanboys would be set, since Snyder has no qualms with that **** obviously. The question is, does his style really suit the material.
