Brian Hitch: Evolution of Art

Every artist at some point picks someone to emulate and copy. Look at all thee McFarlane clones that have come and gone. The key is not to get caught in that.

There have been so many trends that way, Davis, Neal Adams, Joe Kubert, Simon Bizley, McFarlane, Mike Mignola, all of them have spawned clones of their work. Thing is the ones who don't develope further on their own end up fading away while others who do aspire to better things go on to become better known.

Look at Travis Charest compared to Rob Liefield. Where is that guy now anyway? Liefeld...he was really bad.

Charest aped Jim Lee for most of his early work, actually.

that Meggan looks like an Amanda Conner
Except that she looks like she's more than five feet tall.

More Hitchy goodness!

Say what you will about the movie, but this is just too ****ing beautiful.

No idea my friend. Just got it from Google images. It's interesting to see Hitch's take on 616.

It's also good to see people posting some of his art (I really didn't want this thread to get bogged down with the whole 'influences' thing). It's amazing to compare his early stuff to the killer work he's producing now.

His early work looks like typical comics in the '80s style art, before artists really began to create their own style. I just wish it didn't take him 3-4 months to finish a book.

I think it was from a Wizard cover. His King Thor looks almost identical to Alan Davis' King Thor, by the way.

Hitch draws everybody's face like if they just changed car oil.

Cause the heavy shading makes it look like their face is smudged up with grease, like you get from working on your car. I'm pretty sure that's what DS was getting at anyway.

Nice.

Hm, wow. It's kinda interesting to see the shift in art style. But then again, as an artist m'self, it's not all that surprising.

And while I'm not a huge Supes fan, that 'Superman Returns' art is gorgeous.

I may be alone in this, but ive never seen an "Alan Davis" style in Hitch's work today or in the past.

you seriously have a bad set of eyes. aren't you the one that also sees no jae lee in larrocca's new stuff?

Glad to see other people have noticed Hitch's influence. Aland Davis has always been one of my favorite artists and there was a time where Hitch copied it VERY closely; it's what probably got me to notice him.

Darth, although Hitch's use of lines and "real-er" art has further separated him from the style he was "aping" to this day I can still see it in the way his characters "move". A lot of their poses (mainly those an artist tends to repeat) and how their bodies behave are EXTREMELY similar. The way they simplify the features for character that are in the background and/or are too small to be given much detail are also practically the same (the Goliath in the 616 splash is a good example). I know you probably still won't see it, but it's living and breathing in Hitch's art even if his line work is not as clean as Davis'.

goliath is dead-on davis.

and you know something else? while, i'm a huge hitch fan, AND can see the alan davis influence...i don't really like alan's artwork that much...i like his older stuff, but his recent stuff is just bland to me.

Yeah, I hear ya. I've seen people describe Davis' art as looking like the characters were made of plastic. I know his art has shifted and I agree that ti wasn't totally for the best, but I still love it. The same happened to me with George Perez, I used to absolutely love his work and now I don't find as appealing. Ironically, I think the shift came from when he said that he took time off to study and rally learn about the craft instead of doing it on his own like had been. :( Sometimes I actually like George's Mini-Me (Phils Jimenez) art better than I do Perez's.:o

For anyone (and by anyone I mean Darthphere :woot: ) who says they can't see the Davis Influence in Hitch's work; take a look at this Wolvie vs.Juggernaut pic:-

I really hope you can see it this time as If you can't then I've lost all hope ;)
