Brightburn aka Superman's origin as a horror film

Looks interesting. Kind of haunting at times.
It might be a good exploration to a "what if superman was bad" scenario.

Mature.

So because Mandon doesn’t like a film for whatever reason you go after him personally.

Tells me all I need to know about the dynamic between the two.

It's okay dude, I appreciate the support but don't fret too much, it's all fine.

This looks actually kind of fun. Wonder how they'll actually stop a Super kid on a killing spree. Will they have some sort of Kryptonite or just nuke the whole town in order to stop him?

Oh that's not it, at all. It's just that when I see a trailer for a movie I don't think will be very good, I usually move on from it instead of dwelling on it. I'm not the one being hilariously hyperbolic here.

But sure, call me immature all you want I guess.

This looks like it is trying to be serious but I'm not sure I can take it seriously based on that trailer.

@SkullDevil I know right. Don't like don't watch it. Simple.

Trailer was hilarious.

It’s NOT going to be a comedy, unless people mean this in the so bad it’s funny sense (which even that I don’t get since it isn’t that either. It may rub me the wrong way viscerally and on a gut level, but it's clearly well crafted.)

Patton Oswalt saw it and likens it to HALLOWEEN...

The trailer was set up in the way it was too fool audiences in theaters into believing it’s the next Superman film (that it's playing out as funny to some I doubt was intentional since trailers are designed based on how people will react in theaters - where it's set up to initially play as MOS2). To go further, since audiences are slow in these regards - without being so direct, they may not have got that it was intending to be evil Superman (many may actually think it is a DC or Marvel film still, I wouldn't be surprised if some ask if the kid is meant to fight Superman).

From the looks of it all Mandon did was reply to someone who replied to him, just stating it as I see it.

Was the trailer supposed to be funny? I find the major MoS rip off to be hilarious but the content itself was creepy and scary not funny

They did that based on how it will play off in theaters. Doubt it was “let’s laugh at Man of Steel” rather it was “let’s initially make them think it IS Man Of Steel 2.”

Since online one knows the title, one won’t fall for it. In theaters without knowing the title ahead of time, it’s edited to play that way.

Plus, as said - Patton Oswalt saw it and likens it to 'Halloween;' so it's definitely meant to be horror.

I didn't find it funny at all. I guess the parallels with some Superman stuff might make some people laugh.
I found it more intriguing and creepy than anything else.

I think that this movie might very well enrich Superman´s own history.

without knowing the budget-and most horror films are low budget-i have no idea how to make a movie with enough mix of supermans powers.

I think that this movie might very well enrich Superman´s own history.

Could you expand upon how?

As someone who shares a similar backstory as Superman, I just find it ****ting on everything Superman stands for - being a beacon for adoptees and immigrants everywhere, paving the way by showing people they have nothing to fear from aliens or outsiders since they are just like you. "Alien" in Superman mythos was always a metaphor for immigrants and we are living through one of the most xenophobic periods in history. In short, from what's presented, it goes against that intent.

I also think that reading of it was unintentional, it is Gunn after all and GOTG were great, albeit skewed, adoption movies (Quill and Yondu).

---------------------

A thought that didn't cross my mind before (read it online) which - if it happens would seriously push the xenophobia further to a scary degree -

What if it has a "Lex Luthor" who's depicted as the "good guy."

This basically means painting a guy who rages about the dangers of aliens as a hero. That, during the Trump age is really unnerving.

I'm hoping it doesn't go farther in the xenophobia aspect than it already unintentionally does ("he's dangerous since he's not from here") - but, I can also see people's speculations that there's an alternate "Lex" as likely as well.

Another commenter said it reads like a propaganda film made by Lex Luthor about Superman's origins - which is really accurate.

Well i feel it would give even more depth and importance to Superman´s own traditional and original story.

We all know what Superman is and what he stands for. This movie seems to spin it into what a Superman-like character could have been if he was evil. What would have been the impact on people close to him like his "family", general people around him, the world... What could have been. The horror, fear... of having someone that can go rogue in any moment and basically can´t be stopped. His motivations, the way he could use his power to affect the world around him...

There are so many angles to this approach. For one it would give even more value to the fact that Superman is indeed a good guy taking into account what could have been otherwise.

I can see that if NURTURE played an essential role, but from what the trailers show the parents aren't really abusive and the kid was just born to be evil.

I LOVE the Smallville episodes that show what Clark could be if Lionell found him - those did it great.

Here it just shows there's something evil about the kid since (1) he's not their biological son, thus the "killer adoptee" trope, and (2) he's not from here.

Then again i do understand why some Superman fans might be annoyed with such a depiction of a Superman-like character.
Personally i find its an interesting angle.

As a foreign adoptee, this looks like absolute garbage. All of the "bad seed" "evil adoptee" tropes thrown into one while ****ting on an icon. "Bad seed" narratives are part of the reason many adoptees struggle with the question, "is there something inherently wrong with me?"

The existence of this film actually angers me and it's the first film I can name that does that. I think it's because of how important Superman is to me as a foreign adoptee. Superman taught me that despite never knowing my parents, I could be strong, do good, and aim for the stars just like anyone else. So, to see Superman get twisted and gutted like this - not to mention throwing all the "bad seed" adoptee tropes in on top of it all - it's just repulsive on a visceral level.

No thanks, I'll stick to 'Chronicle.'

I respect your personal feelings on the matter, but I think you’re reading way too much into it. You haven’t even actually seen the film and you’re getting offended by the message you think it’s putting out.

I don't know about this one. I hope it's good. Have we had horror twists like this before?
