i posted this elsewhere, but i thought here would a good place, too:

so there's the lighttounite.org thing that bristol-meyers squibb (a mutli-BILLION pharmaceutical company) has set up. you go there, and light a "virtual candle" and b-ms will donate a buck for every candle to help fighting aids. sounds great. people are posting bulletins about it all over myspace.

i guess no one read the fine print. the donation caps at $100,000. that's it. the number of people that have lit candles his over 1,000,000 now. as of 900,000 people ago, your vote (as they say) doesn't count.

the point is: light a candle if it's symbolic to you, but don't expect it to be doing anything.

bristol-meyers is just like every other billion dollar company. they don't give a **** about people with aids. they give a **** about rich people with aids. because rich people can afford 1,000+ daily on medication.

so instead of passing around a bulliten encouraging people to light a candle to fight aids, pass this around and encourage people to write to bristol-meyers squibb and let them know what you think. let them know that you think a $100,000 donation from a billion dollar company is a slap in the face.

you can do that by going here:

contact bristol-meyers squibb

They didn't have to give $100,000.
You're like the bums who ask me for change and when all I have is a dime and a penny they say "Nevermind".
Should we compile a list of all the big corporations and see how much they've all given?

you honestly don't see a hypocrisy here?

if you're going to say you care. if you're going to say you're going to do something to help, then help. don't say you're going to match EVERY lighting with a dollar when you have a disclaimer that says otherwise.

people need real help, man. you don't fund wars on a $100,000, and fighting aids is basically a war itself.

i'm going to assume you're a bush supporter, what with your contentment with partial-done jobs.

Whats all this nonsense about candles?

1) The only problem would be if they DIDN'T have a disclaimer
2) We're talking about a PHARMACEUTICAL company, some of the most evil people in the world. Don't poo-poo the hundred thou, you're lucky to get anything from a company who legally OWES it to their share holders to keep the populace in a constant state of illness.
3) The only thing I support for Bush is the Death Penalty for war crimes, so don't "assume". :o

pointing out the evil-ness of the lying drug companies was my point. and you just agreed with me, while trying not too. good job.

i think it's funny that you put "We Don't Care About AIDS" as though BMS actually said it :whatever:

anyway, yes, for a company who reported a profit of $3 billion USD in 2005, $100,000 seems a drop in the pond.

fine.

but where's pfizer's world aids day campaign? merck's?

besides -- raising awareness is the main purpose of the campaign. just to get people to care a little more.

(my candle was somewhere in the 300,000s :o)

dude, a drug company's LAST priority is raising awareness about diseases. what would be the monetary benefit in that? what this is, is a publicity opportunity: "look at us, we care".

obviously it's PR, anything the company puts its name on is. that's not a concern to me.

but it's still PR for the betterment of something. and it's $100,000 to the National AIDS Fund, which supports grassroots organizations.

it's not like they don't have their own labs working on cures and drugs.

make people light a candle, so that, even for a minute, they'll think about the amount of suffering that AIDS is causing.

eta: various other pharmaceutical companies have made donations to the national AIDS fund this year.
