British comedy vs American comedy

I've always failed to see the point of this argument (it comes up a lot in my circle of friends). Comedy is comedy, its point is to entertain, who cares where it comes from?

The problem is not where it comes from, but [/i]how[/i] it's necessitated and the material and means of aforementioned humour.

There's also a difference between highbrow and lowbrow humour.

It's also subject to timing, delivery and subtlety.

I'm severely disappointed that nobody has mentioned Blackadder. That trumps any other comedy show.

'boom, boom. boom. boom, boom, boom...'

How'd I forget Blackadder?! I loved that show.

British Comedy.

American Comedy tends to be....lame.

The Brits made Blackadder and Monty Python. 'nuff said.

British Comedy makes you think a little, then laugh hard. American comedy is...Fart Jokes.

I can't believe how many third-rate-actor-and-his/hers-funny-family-sitcoms there are in America. You have complete **** like The War at Home, According to Jim, Still Standing, Grounded for Life, 8 Simple Rules and the list goes on and on and on...

actualy...The War at Home is one of the few i can watch and enjoy:)

I advise one and all to stay on topic. And, refering to Maddox or not--Reeve has no place in this thread, so keep you opinion of him to yourself, unless it's within a thread of the proper topic.

I suspect Married with Children was pretty popular in Britain, because it seemed to be a more raunchy version of some of the stuff they did. British comedy can be funny, but most of us only know Benny Hill and Monty Python, and that's it. Some british comedy can be downright crude, though, so I wouldn't put it all on us here in the states.

I think Britain does better comedy, such as The Office, Operation Good Guys and Brass Eye, but America does better sitcoms like Frasier, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The Brass Eye pedophile special is still the single greatest piece of satire ever on telly imo.

It showed moral panics and folk devils in a way Cohen would have been proud of.

However this moment tops the Simpsons

Still I love the Simpsons and I have loved many American comedies and Films - Stripes and European Vacation made me lol at the time.

Speaking of american humour Ive always found the comic U.S. War Machine a bit redundant ;)

I grew up on Benny Hill and loved Shaun of the Dead...... i think british humor is more on the dry end... which is cool... but not really for me nowadays.

I seek instant gratification... hence I'm looking forward to Jackass 2.

Seconded.

Jackass is the kind of thing that convinces anyone with a camcorder that they can be a comical genius.

Which is why Jackass sucks. I blame Jackass for the kazillion morons with their clips on the net which aren't funny in the slightest.

British is best, in most things, especially comedy.

Nothing wrong with fart jokes  All humor has its place.

I still fin this as shocking but I do enjoy the American version of The Office. Its not nearly as well done as the U.K version but I still enjoy it.

I missed Extras... I need to pick that up on DVD.

depends, american shows are generally easier viewing...

british shows are either hits or misses... but there are too many misses...
