C. Nolan's Interstellar

directors need to deny it. look what happened with Cameron and terminator. he was honest and said where he was inspired. to this day some are acting like Cameorn stole the whole story and made a 100% copy movie.
Not in this case as borrowing visual elements but having a pretty different story doesn't constitute as litigious in Japan.

Most find it to be a form of flattery as long as you don't copy it exactly.

That explanation also doesn't gel with me as he's said before that he's a fan of Michael Mann and how Heat visually inspired TDK but in this case for the late Satoshi Kon and Paprika they get completely thrown under the bus.

It's just a funny observation mainly. I think Nolan just doesn't want to admit being influenced by anime is all. :funny:

Actually, the fact that he's putting original ideas of his makes me even more hopeful. He's at his best when he does stuff of his own, imo.

He's at his best when he makes movies.

Proud fanboy for the win. :woot::oldrazz:

He'll be adding things from particular pieces of work in the same genre and then flat out deny them when people ask him if he was influenced by it or not (*cough*direct visual pieces from Paprika*cough*). :p

Steins; Gate you best pepper your angus!

:wow: What is that?

EDIT: Oh, sorry, you mentioned the title. This is my first time hearing about any of this, definitely going to check it out.

That's Paprika , a Satoshi Kon movie that deals with therapy using dreams. Magnificent film i might add.

Satoshi Kon was nothing short than an amazing director. I get sad just remembering his letter :csad:
Likewise. An amazing mind Satoshi Kon was.

Is that J. Jonah Jameson harassing Betty Brant in the Daily Bugle elevator?
No it's just a visual that Nolan borrowed without giving credit is all.

It's a great movie that you should definitely check out. Deals with dreams in an incredibly clever and smart way. Might as well check out Steins; Gate too as that also deals with a ton of Kip Thorne theories and I honestly think it isn't a giant leap that Nolan may borrow visual elements from that too.

Anyone who loves science , and is a little bit interested in this matter , check his videos in closertotruth.com . He speaks in a very casual way about spacetime , dark matter , wormholes , time travel , universe structure etc

I've wanted to check that show for a while.

It's a masterpiece. It's one of the best pieces of sci fi I have ever seen. I was left floored, enamored and completely mentally & emotionally exhausted (in a good way) by the end of it all.

The absolute truth right there.

Craig, Nolan did cite Paprika as inspiration for Inception. He cited it as inspiration to a French magazine, originally.

"Christopher Nolan cites [Paprika] as one of the principal influences and was inspired by its main character to flesh out his character played by Ellen Page, a 'spirit architect' named Ariadne."

Links with Inception: Christopher Nolan cites as a major influence and inspiration for the main character to refine the character played by Ellen Page, an architect of the mind that is named Arianne (in theory, the reference jumps eyes).

Contradicting reports as someone who attended the Q&A between Nolan and G. Del Toro asked Nolan directly if he was aware of Satoshi Kon and Paprika and whether or not he used it as influence and he apparently denied it.

[YT]5Ovp9aG4NYM[/YT]"Actually, I just want the part where I asked about Paprika, because I need to ironically update Wikipedia's section, and they want proof that he said he didn't see it. The irony is that they're stating as fact that Excessif thing, even though it doesn't even quote him."

Damn, out journalised. :funny:

I think it's possible that his brother Jonah was the one that saw Paprika. He is the big comic book and anime fan after all of the two. One of them had to have seen it. It's not possible for both to not have seen it.

Nolan did say he had heard of the movie apparently though. He probably heard of the movie from Jonah.

kind of like how hunger games author denied ever seeing battle royale which is just complete BS

I'd say his brother probably helped him out with the script and was uncredited. It's possible. Nolan is usually diligent at naming his influences, so I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, personally.

That's what I theorized as well but someone (Chris) is telling Wally how to frame the shot which leads me to believe C. Nolan has very well seen the film. That's the smoking gun for me.

Regardless I love when anime cross pollinates with work from western directors that I like. Would it be cool if Satoshi Kon got more credit in the vain of Aronofsky crediting him for major inspiration from Perfect Blue for Black Swan? Absolutely but hey at least anime is being recognized one way or another.

Now I'm just hoping Jonah saw Steins; Gate and convinced Chris to use elements from that for Interstellar. The funny thing is that the main character resembles Joseph Gordon Levitt uncannily so there's a start. :funny:

Like I said before I don't think Nolan usually has problems admitting his influences but seeing as this is anime he may fear some sort of artistic backlash from some of his peers. Understandable but so unfortunate at the same time.

Considering how influential Ghost in the Shell and Akira have been to Hollywood, I really doubt there would be any backlash, or that he would fear it either.

"Oh, he's taking ideas from cartoons now?"

That is what they would say.

not to mention nolan perceives himself as a director of originality a trait lots of fans and hollywood see as an endearing trait

This is going to be a unique transtitional period for Nolan... so it'll be interesting to see who he brings along with him from his previous team.

I'm hoping he shakes it up a little bit.

As much as I like Crowley, I wouldn't mind id he brought his Inception Production Designer in for this one (Guy Hendrix, was it?). I think he'd have something interesting to bring to a space movie.

Yeah... Guy Hendrix Dyas I think. Plus he doesn't seem to be involved with anything at the moment.

His work is always pretty solid.

Pretty sure we won't be able to know what exactly the story's about until watching it at cinema....like every films Chris Nolan did.

November 2014 will be epic, especially if Bond 24 lands that month.

Before the Matrix was inspired by Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell was inspired by Blade Runner.
