Well, can he? If he can, than closing his eyes becomes difficult, especially to nonvisible radiation.

Damn...good freakin question. But you have to assume that his own molecular biology is immune to his powers.

I noticed that whenever he uses his X-ray vision, he removes his glasses and squints his eyes. I would assume that means this is a controlled power, therefore he can still sleep at night. =)

i would assume he could see through his own eyelids

If he concentrated and wanted to I don't see why he couldnt.

well its not like he has x-ray vision all the time now.

but if he did then yes lead nightglasses would be damn near perfect!

well, from the replies, it seems there are two camps of fans. The ones who think Superman can turn his powers on and off, and the ones who think that Supermans powers are a part of his biology, and are always on (I'm one of these)

I don't think that he turns his Xray vision on or off. I think it's always on. It's just a matter of focusing on an object. I think he can see through his eyelids, as they are not made of lead.

That's stupid, he has heat vision too but he doesn't go around melting everything in sight. He obviously has the ability to control it.

The most likely explenation for his vision powers that I've heard is that he has several sets of rod and cone cells in his eyes, each one tuned into a different part of the EM spectrum. When he wants to see through an object, he tunes into the part of the spectrum that passes through that object (so, while he could technically see through led, the rays that pass through led pass through everything else, so he'd be effectively blind if he tuned into that part of the spectrum). Thus, he is fully capable of turning his X-Ray vision on and off.

First of all, no, I don't think he can see through his eyelids. That would be like us seeing through our eyelids. His vision strength is proportional to the molecular density of his body.

And no, he doesn't turn his xray vision off. That's like turning off our ability to see through fog or water. It's not really a power, it's just that all his senses and strength is greater than our's. Heat vision is a different matter. It's not like that, it's a side effect of his solar radation absorption I think, rather than being a superhuman version of a natural ability like seeing or hearing.

That doesn't make sense. That would mean he sees through everything all the time. He'd barely be able to function.

It's like how we shift focus from an object that is near, to an object that is far. Superman "shifts focus" from standard vision to X-Ray vision, Microscopic vision, etc.

So you mean to tell us he goes through everyday life seeing directly through things? Wouldn't that make it kind of hard to function on a daily basis?

yeah, but it would be included with all other light, and computed by his brain. It wouldn't be something he turns on or off. It's just, if he wants to look through something, he just can. Its always on, he can just focus on visible light when he wants to. It's just a matter of what end of the light spectrum he focuses on, be it visible or not.

It's like his superhearing. It doesn't have an on/off switch. It's always on, but he can focus it out.

It's not the same as his hearing. He is fully capable of turning his X-Ray vision off. Otherwise he'd never be able to function if he saw every part of the spectrum at once.

how is it any different, he wouldn't be able to function if he could hear every sound in metropolis at once. He's built to be able to handle them all at once, biologically. I think that birthright really got that part right. Who's to say that superman sees the world the way we do. He doesn't, because he can see the full spectrum.

No.

His eyelids are part of his kryptonian body and thus are not dense enough. If he had human eyelids he could see through.

Having enhanced hearing and seeing the entire EM spectrum at once is two different things. His hearing has limits. There are things he can and can't block out. And, with concentraition, once can focus on certain sounds. It would be the same thing if he could see the entire EM spectrum at once. You can't focus on certain wavelengs of light. Just like you can't focus on certain wavelengths of sound. He would be unable to function if he saw every part of the EM spectrum at all times. No, he is capable of turning his X-Ray vision on and off.

IMO it's controlled thing..I'am sure if he wanted to he could see threw them.

Could God cook a burrito so hot even he couldn't eat it?
