First Avenger Caps shield in Iron Man

I think it's when Pepper walks in on Tony getting the suit removed after the dogfight. The shield is on the table behind him.

yea i missed it first time i was in theaters myself. i had to find it on dvd of the film.

I know that the shield in IM2 was supposed to be some kind of prototype and prob not the real shield but I thought it looked pretty flimsy and home-made looking. I was hoping it would look a little more sturdier. Yeah, it held up that collider Stark was trying to build but it looked like plastic.

Cap's shield in Iron Man 2 was a very funny easter egg to have in there.

I'm thinking that the original shield got frozen with Cap, and so in the years between that there have perhaps been unsuccessful attempts by Howard and co. to not only resurrect the mantle of Captain America using a different guy just like in the comics(hence Thunderbolt Ross being in possession of a potentially 'duff' SSS in TIH which caused Blonsky's mutation) but there have also been attempts at re-creating the shield also, only using a different 'techy' method due to the original (much like the SSS) truly being a one-off which can never be replicated as well due to it coming into existance accidentally.

The shield we saw was therefore merely just an inferior prototype.

Just a theory.

yea i havent seen im2 yet myself. but i am still saying what we see there was a prototype and it was only part of the shield the inner star area from a picture i saw of it. So it probably was just a early model of part of the shield and all that. As for the real round shield its probably buried with steve when he is frozen.

It looks like a partially built prototype or mockup showing you a cross section to me. Nothing to be worried about.

It's still annoying that Coulson would treat it with reverie if it is nothing more then an unfinished prototype.

I think thats still plausible... If Captain America is a historic symbol, then his shield, prototype or originial, would cause a certain amount of awe.

A prototype of a thing as iconic as Cap's shield definately deserves awe. I sure would be if its the first time i laid my eyes on it and held it in my hands. Its only natural I think.

Exactly; and Tony, having his scientific head on, is totally like 'pfft - it's just a prototype - what's the big deal?'

well maybe they known about captain america for awhile so the whole awe even at a prototype shield doesnt happen to they see the man for himself.

my only question is why would stark have the shield prototype in iron man 1&2. everyone thought cap was dead. tony may have learned about cap being alive at the end of iron man 1, but he already had the shield in his workshop before meeting fury. is he a history buff? was he commissioned to make the shield beforehand? doesn't really make sense.

It's part of his Dad's "stash," and considering what's revealed in Iron Man 2 (that they didn't have a good relationship, didn't "talk" much), Stark doesn't know/hasn't been informed what it is -- perhaps Stark senior himself kept some stuff secret, even from SHIELD...

Thus why our resident contemporary SHIELD agent says: "What are you doing with this? Do you know what this is?!"

Tony apparently doesn't...thus the humor in the scene -- whether the audience knows what it is or not.

Perfect tease...

I thought this moment worked really well, actually...it would be a nice nod to the Captain whether there was a movie coming or not...

This may be a long shot, but I believe that the shield and, the short scene it was in in Iron Man 2, was more than an easter egg or wink to the fans. I personally read a little more depth to it than that. Stark uses the shield to balance the piece of machinery that he is using to save his life. Hes using it to balance it. Now as most of you all know, Tony and Steve become close during there time in the Avengers, as contradictory as they both are to each other. I think Favreau meant for the shield in that scene to foreshadow/symbolize Tony and Steves friendship and close bond. The shield balances that conduit or whatever it is so tony can save his life. Steve was always Tonys "balance", Even to the point where Tony looked up to him. As as a film maker Favreau is and is becoming i felt that scene meant more than to get us fanboys wet in the pants. Anyone else care to elaborate?

i think you are seeing what you want. the shield was there in the first one and this time they used it in a comedic way, nothing more nothing less. its for the fans no doubt, but i wouldnt read to much into it. i just wasnt sure how their continuity was, which is why i wondered why the shield was there in the first place. i hope there is some answers in cap movie.

well there the ideal which i believe was said in the tie in comic to the first film. that stark borrowed material patterns or what not from cap's shield for his designs of the iron man armor or something. i am not to sure on that though.

So you think the shield was a metaphor for Tony and Steve's relationship?

That's deep.

yeah man. well in that scene in particular atleast. if you see the movie again soon keep that in mind when it comes up. i didnt think of it till the second time i saw it.

That was a really cool scene. I was glad that the shield actually was mentioned and in a funny way. I'm assuming both Tony and Coulson knew what it was unless it was another project left behind by his father. Maybe Howard left the shield for Tony to finish with today's technology?

I'm hoping it'll be like the Ultimates movie. Capt. has that WW2 era shield and gets frozen with that one and the circular one in the Iron Man movies is something his father was working on for Captain America before he was frozen or during the time Shield was looking for him.

This might be a bit of a stretch as well, but the "shield" reminded me of a cake form. Maybe it's something similar . . . Yeah, I know. I'm just throwing things out there! :oldrazz:
