Long post warning, if you don't like to read, move on to another post. For that matter if you don't like to read, why use a message board anyway?
I’ve posted this in this section, as here it would not have any bearing on a discussion of a working superman project, or one that is scrapped, or has ever actually been made. If a mod thinks it would fit better in another one, I wont be upset if they move it.
If you could cast for Superman, with any actor in history. Time period not applying, any actor, ever, from any point in their life, and they could be brought into the modern age to take on the role?
Just say what actor you would want and why. Post pics, vids links whatever to support who you envision the man of Steel looking and sounding like.
　
1. Lets keep it Positive. If you got nothing nice to say about a guys choice, just list your own instead. If someone thinks that Don Knotts would make a good man of Steel, and you want to gaff them for saying it, too bad, just say who you think would make a good Superman instead. If you agree with someone, that is just fine to go into detail about why it’s a good choice. Positive feedback is encouraged.
2. The other rule is, the Actor cannot have played the character in the past. So I will not say Christopher Reeve for the Superman, as he has already played the role in the past.
The purpose is to get a better idea of how we envision Superman, as each of us has a different view on the character based off of things other than just the live action TV shows and movies. Many of us big fans of STAS and the DC comics may see him as a little different than Reeve or Welling.
Remember we can remain calm on this one, as we are not necessarily talking about actors who would, or even could take on the role, because many of them are either dead now, or are too old. My choice was born 50 years too early for instance.
Since, I started the thread, I will go first with my choice for the man of Steel.
This type of Superman movie, would be intended to be more stylized, and true to comic book as well as STAS than other Superman films have been. Where the character would be intended to be as close to the comic book page as the characters in the movie Watchmen were. Weather you agree with it having been made as a movie or not, at least they tried to keep it as close to the comic as possible (most of the debate is if or not that was a success, not weather it was attempted), and in that way it was stylized.
What I mean is bending physics in order and that some belief has to be suspended and rules bent a bit, just to make the movie flow well with being stylized. Another example would be a Batmobile that looks good, like the Burton batmobile, even if in real life it could not do what the highly functional one in the Nolan movies could really do. For superman it means a cape that would we shredded to bits every time he flies but in the movie is just fine. We just pick a cape that looks good on the costume.
My choice for Superman, in such a stylized and true to comics and STAS form, and actually how I envision the character looking, sounding and behaving like if he stepped into reality, would be Clint Walker in his prime, around age 30. Dirty Dozen he was already 40 years old, so I am thinking more what Clint looked like from the old Cheyenne, Warner Brothers, Western TV show.
Clint had natural piercing blue eyes, black hair, square Jaw, a very muscular build for his time period, and very tall. I never thought I would see an actor who I thought looked more like Superman than Chris Reeve, but Walker's face looked even more like what I think Superman would look like.
Even though he was reportedly 6’6" in his Prime, I think that would not have been a problem, but rather an asset. Just a little slouching as Clark would make him look only 6’3". His Muscular build would be just perfect to blend in as Clark in a Well Tailored suit, and yet look powerful in spandex or other tight material as Superman.
Clint was physically very unique for his time period, because he had such a muscular build, even though he never competed as a bodybuilder, and was before the bodybuilder makeover of the 1980’s action hero. Yet Clint just was a powerfully built man, who engaged in regular physical exercise just to stay in shape. Today a director may ask a man of his build to work with a coach for a couple months before filming begins, as his suit would be practically painted on. Clint’s physique was so close that getting him into even Superman shape would be very easy.
IMHO his face looked more like what I would expect superman to look like than even Chris Reeve did. Nothing against Reeve, it is just that Clint nailed it even more so.
On top of having the looks, Clint walker had the perfect voice for the role. Deep and strong, yet not gravely or menacing. His was the voice of a man who would make someone else feel safe if he was going to protect you. He had a good singing voice too.
More than that, he had a Superman like presence. If any human has ever lived who had the STAS, or Comic book presence, and really had all the best aspects of the Alex Ross superman, Jim Lee Superman, and STAS Superman come to life it was by far Clint Walker.
As an actor, Clint was one of the Primary people to put Warner Brothers on the map in the first place, with his very successful role as Cheyenne. His upstanding moral portrayal of the character became one of the benchmarks for leading men in Western films for a long time to follow him.
Off camera, Walker was much the same way he was in character. He did not like to take roles if he felt the movie was peddling bad morals. He was ok with playing a villain, so long as the moral of the feature was that crime does not pay. He even went so far as to toss scripts as soon as he would read a four letter word.
After he got older he also championed American Indian rights, and has refused to take side in political debates, preferring to be a man who thinks things should be better decided on good sound sensibility, rather than political loyalty. – again a Superman trait of not taking sides with the left or right wing.
