Back in 1995, Richard Donner recieved a screenplay based on a popular 80s TV show, written by Shane Black. Various directors, like Tony Scott and John McTiernan, passed on the film, but Donner decided to handle the project.

• Michael Clarke Duncan audicioned for B.A.
• Jim Carrey was considered for Murdock
• Woody Harrelson campaigned to be Murdock but the actor lost the part after his audition was overshadowed by Buscemi's. However, Donner liked Harrelson's audition so much that he casted him as Lynch / Burress
• Shane Black wrote the character of Morrison with George Peppard in mind, but the actor died while he was finishing the screenplay. Donner liked the idea so he casted James Coburn (who was the first choice for Hannibal in the TV series) as Morrison.
