I'm curious. What are your qualms with this JJJ?

I don't mind JJJ being comic relief, but he is one-note. It is very obviously based on JK Simmons's interpretation of the character. But Simmons played the role as a very minor supporting character because JJJ was never going to have a large part in the movies. Instead he is there for comic relief and he took the essence of the character and added that motormouth aspect to him and was perfect and fit in very well.

The cartoon I think (wrongfully) is using that motormouth one-note version of him, because it is the popular one since the movies. But in a cartoon, like the comics, you have more room to expand on him and make him more interesting. Instead the voice actor sounds like a bad impression of Simmons and he is just kind of dull. I compare him to Ed Asner's JJJ in TAS, who had a real personality and was very funny, but also had a serious and intriguing side like in the comics. He cared about helping Peter and Robbie when they were both framed on seprate occasions and helping S.H.I.E.L.D. or finding Felcia Hardy when she was kidnapped. He did stupid funny things but he had a compassionate side, best illustrated in the wedding episode with Peter and MJ that was inadvertantly funny (he gave Peter a car to outdo Fisk and show respect, but it is a busted news van).

I feel this SSM version of JJJ will not give fruit to that, because he is only comic relief and they took the cosmetic attributes of Simmons's performance and not the whole thing when reinterpreting for him in the cartoon.

But still not a major factor in the enjoyment of the show.

I loved the look on te green Goblin's face when he said "Well, the ball room anyway." He looked psychotic!

Speaking of MJ, I wonder what she'll do in the next episode. It's going to be great seeing the students reactions when MJ comes to Midtown High.

I love the part when Spider-Man and Tombstone were cracking jokes about Goblin and he rolls his eyes and says "Helloooo I'm still in the room."

lol

Classic.

I have a feeling that there will be more to come from the character. The fact is that he is one of the main cast members according to the credits, as it Gwen, and both have been underused at this point.

Exactly, I mean he doesn't like Spider-Man right now, but as you said, they really are developing his hatred for Spidey.

There's an episode further in this season that involves his son -- so I imagine that will be his true statement on whether or not he likes Spider-Man (as he's bound to be involved).

That reminds me. John got hit by Goblin's laser, and it looked like it really hurt. I bet his arm is broken or something, but he isn't going to tell anyone so he won't get pulled from the mission. His injury might cause the malfunction during reentry that'll lead to his rescue by the wall crawler. JJJ wouldn't be happy about that.

Great episode, my favourite so far.

But also i have a question about Goblin - was there any situation where Green Goblin and Spidey went toe to toe and fight with bare hands like in the movie ? (Norman - at the end and Harry in his mansion). I mean fighting without a glider, pumpkin bombs etc. Sorry for offtopic but i am very curious.

Well, the final battle between Harry and Peter was primarily a hand-to-hand fight, and what a fight it was...

I watched that scene in slow-mo. It was a bit obscure but I'm 99% sure Gobby just knocked the gun out of John's hand. It still hurt like a mofo (can I still use that Mr. J?) but probably didn't injure him.

A couple of other things I noticed.

Peter awkwardly calling MJ "Red" as he leaves the dance. Awww.

How is it that between broken glass raining down from the city skyline, a party of rich people being threatened, a mad bomber flying around NYC in a post 9/11 world and JJJ calling Robbie and casually suggesting he call the police did NONE show up? You'd have thought the national guard would show up if not a SWAT team.

So far this has been my favorite episode. The fight between GG and Spidey was fantastic and amazing and I'm really liking this version of GG. Wow.....just..wow. MJ was fresh and intriguing and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her in future shows. Loved the way she handled herself at the formal. This show actually seems to have a nice sense of style as well, like how they're setting up the secret identity of GG as well as Harry's own personal demons. Good stuff. Finally, that last exchange between Tombstone and Spidey. Loved it!!

personally i don't like that idea, i actually feel it takes away a lot from his character if he has to have something actually happen to him to hate Spidey. i find it makes a much more interesting character with the comics explanation

I dunno, I liked TAS' explanation for why he hated masked vigilantes.

Well, as I have said, Brock is supposed to become sort of crazy over time, so maybe his hatred is just out of no where.

Yeah, Eddie Brock is perhaps hiding a more darker side. But it's slowly being freed because some of the things Parker has done. Remember Natural Selection? Eddie genuinely seemed disappointed with Parker, and then the whole situation with Gwen and Peter. Things seem to be escalating.

Indeed, I wonder what the final act will be that pushes him over the edge.

A very quick one.

^ Way better than what we got Saturday. The only cool scenes was Harry's ending and MJ making fun of the prep girls and Pete and her dancing. Otherwise, yeah, I thought Goblin sucked and the voice-actor tried to be Willem Dafoe.

There is no truth to that whatsoever.

And do you even know what GOOD ANIMATION IS? That was so slow and crappy looking... take off the nostalgia tinted glasses and look again.

Likely Peter will do nasty stuff under the symbiotic influence that makes Brock way PO'ed.

Of course I do have to wonder why, once he gets the symbiote and Peter's memories, why he won't suddenly understand that Peter isn't a sellout at all and he's really been helping everyone as Spider-Man.

I always disliked the 90s animation. They tried to be cool with 3-d backgrounds, but it never blended well with the 2-d characters. And there was always cheesy music in the background, and they didn't take time to just let some moments breathe like the current one does.
