Eli Roth talks about Cell at Comic-Con

In a brief bit of news from NYCC's Hostel Part II panel, filmmaker Eli Roth revealed that Cell, his big screen adaptation of the Stephen King novel, is currently in the script-writing stage and would be his next project.

"Cell… the writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, they were the writers for Ed Wood and 1408, which is an awesome, really scary script. It's going to be so good. They're working a draft right now, so by the time I finish Hostel Part II the script should be ready. I really want to read it."

Focusing on the "curse" of modern technology, Cell tells the story of humanity's last hope — a group of individuals who band together to survive a world infested by zombie-like killing machines. Reverberating through cell phones across the planet, "The Pulse" (as it becomes known) changes all who hear it into relentless killing machines, capable of death and destruction to any one who stands in their way

i like eli roth's movies, i don't care. i don't understand the hate behind them. i guess it's another one of those damned bandwagons. i mean, seriously, where's the beef? there's no story? boo-effing-hoo, it's a horror movie, and half the horror movies that people praise on this site have just as much (or little) story. plus, eli's movies are funny, and fun, and have some really nice gore. at least he isn't afraid to go for a hard r-rating, unlike most of these pg-13 horror movies that've come out lately.

so, whatever. i've never liked stephen king, but i do like zombies, and this story does sound halfway interesting, and, with roth behind the camera, it should at least be fun to watch.

I heard the book is pretty good and 1408 is apparently excellent but the fact hacky Mchackpants is directing lowers my interest.

The book is awesome, wonder what Eli Roth will do with it.
Rape it up the ass.
Seriously, Hostel sucked. What the hell was King thinking, giving this to him? Oh well, I still have the potential Dark Tower series/movie from JJ Abrams to be excited about. Yay.

Roth Says No Sleeping In This "Cell"By Garth FranklinTuesday March 27th 2007 12:48amEli Roth says he plans to make some changes to the film adaptation of Stephen King's "Cell", but with good intention (not to mention the author's blessing).

Roth tells Sci-Fi Wire that "I love the opening [scene], but I also want to keep, ... not necessarily that same chaotic tone, but I want to keep the tension of the opening 40 pages of the book going throughout the whole film and introduce other elements. Because I think the book, for me, where it loses tension is where suddenly you don't feel like the phone crazies are trying to kill them."

His intention is to find a way "to make it so you still feel the tension... that any second you could get killed [and] carrying that throughout the whole film."

Roth hopes to shoot the movie in Boston, where it is set, and possibly persuade King to make a cameo - "If he'd like to, sure. There's always room. That's the good thing about Cell. Because it's like crazy people running around trying to [kill you] It's like everybody gets a cameo

Stephen King's Cell Goes Mini-Series
Source: Dread Central July 14, 2009

A screen adaptation of Stephen King's "Cell" has been at a stand-still since Eli Roth walked away from the project. But no longer.

Word out of the Fantastia Film Festival in Montreal is that there is a new creative entity on board: John Harrison. He recently told audiences that he's signed aboard to turn the book into a mini-series. For who? He never explained. Is Dimension Films still involved or did they lose the rights? Hopefully, more details will come to the fore in the coming months.

Harrison recently completed Clive Barker's Book of Blood.

In "Cell," cell phone users around the world are turned into mindless killers. During this apocalyptic phenomenon, a New England artist teams with other unaffected by the cell signal to find his son.

I can't wait to check out that one. If he does that Barker story justice I'll have a little more faith in him.

I don't like the whole mini-series part though, the book is pretty short, the story could easily be done in a two hour movie. Glad Eli Roth isn't on board though, he'd just turn the movie into torture porn, which it isn't.

I'm sure the book is ok, but honestly, this sounds stupid as ****.

Give it a chance. Only the people who actually answer their cell phones when the signal was sent out get turned. As long as they get a good cast it should be pretty good.

I liked the book, but won't check this out any time soon since it'll probably be on the Sci-Fi channel.

Ive never undterstood all the Roth hate. Cabin Fever wasnt excellent but it was really ****ed up and had some really great dark humor in it. Same for Hostel while I dont really dig it I liked it for what it was and same goes for Hostel 2 I mean come on we got to see Natalie Matasaro (sp) *******! Thats an A++ if I ever seen one

Screen Daily is reporting that John Cusack (1408, Stand by Me) is getting back into the Stephen King business, signing to star in Cargo Entertainment's Cell. The novel is described as follows:

Artist Clayton Riddell had been in Boston negotiating a successful deal to sell his comic book project. His joy at finally hitting it big is shattered by an event called The Pulse which causes all those who were using their cell phones at the time of The Pulse to become zombies attacking and killing anyone in their way. Fortunately for Clay, he does not own a cell phone. In the panic to get out of Boston and find his way home to his wife and son in Maine, he is joined by Tom McCourt, a man he meets in the mele immediately following The Pulse and a young girl, Alice, who they rescue from being killed by one of the crazies. The story follows their terrifying journey, avoiding captureand worseby the crazies who are beginning to flock and are led by one they call Raggedy Man as they attempt to reach Maine and a place called Kashwak which they hope will be their salvation.

The site says that former Dimension Films president of production and 1408 executive Richard Saperstein will produce through his Genre Company alongside colleagues Brian Witten and Shara Kay.

King co-wrote the screenplay with The Last House on the Left screenwriter Adam Alleca.

Whoa this is awesome news! Not King's best book but I've always thought this could make a damn good film.

Cargo Entertainment has now tapped Paranormal Activity 2 helmer Tod "Kip" Williams to direct the feature adaptation of Stephen King's Cell, starring John Cusack.

Screen Daily reports that King has already co-written the script with House at the End of the Street scribe Adam Alleca. The story centers on a graphic artist who attempts to reach his wife and son after a devastating pulse transmits through a mobile phone network.
"Tod is a dynamic filmmaker whose work has been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful," said Cargo CEO Marina Grasic in a statement. "He brings a unique and exciting vision to Cell that will appeal to audiences worldwide."
Principle photography is scheduled to begin this May, with Brian Witten and Shara Kay producing.

The book was pretty bad, but I think it might work better as a film.

Based on our last report in May, shooting was reportedly supposed to begin last month on Cell, based on the novel by Stephen King. I don't think cameras have started rolling quite just yet, but I have discovered a piece of sales art that will likely be used to tout the film at the American Film Market next month.

The film will be directed by Tod "Kip" Williams (Paranormal Activity 2) and John Cusack (1408) is attached to star.

I didn't think this movie was still happening.

Either way, count me in! I'm not convinced that's real promotional material (most artists here on SHH could whip up something better in 5 minutes), but whatever... I hope this is for real. I love Cusack.

Samuel L. Jackson Boards Stephen King's Cell Opposite John Cusack

Following their work together on director Mikael Hafstrom's 2007 supernatural thriller 1408, Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack are re-teaming for another Stephen King adaptation. Variety today brings word that Jackson is set to star opposite the previously announced Cusack in the upcoming Cell. Published in 2006, King's novel is officially described as follows:

Jackson can next be seen in Spike Lee's Oldboy and is set to reprise his Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Nick Fury in next year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Former Dimension Films president of production and 1408 executive Richard Saperstein is producing Cell through his Genre Company alongside colleagues Brian Witten and Shara Kay.

King co-wrote the screenplay with The Last House on the Left screenwriter Adam Alleca.
