Charlize Theron teaming with John Wick Directors for 'Atomic Blonde'

Also I do find the "stagey fights" thing interesting. Because, well lots of movies have those because the fight ARE staged. If anything this looks far less so. I wonder if you just showed this to someone in the general audience if they'd have those same kind of critiques? I kind of doubt it.

And as for the John Wick comparisons, well Keanu has been involved in martial artists for a long time now, and he's apparently a gun enthusiast as well. So him being better at it isn't surprising really.

Again, it has to do more with the hard to avoid pitfalls of what's supposed to be a single sweeping shot vs ones with multiple cuts.
If it didn't put the performers/stuntmen at risk of coming across as "fake", more directors would attempt them.

Charlize kicking arse - check
Cool looking action -check
John Wick style camera work - check
Girl on girl scenes - check.

Two tickets please.

One reason I think the one-shot fight scene feels fake is because of the sound design. It's so bare that I think it's just stock temp sounds for the trailer, at least I hope so. Pay attention to the sounds when one of them gets hit, they're almost identical with every hit.

Remember that awesome bit from the Expendables where Arnold rips a door off the smart car but in the trailer it hovers in the air for a second before flying off?

Remember the Bane sewer fight in TDKR where the sound design was... actually still pretty subpar.

Just watched the trailer again, man, I am hyped for this. I love movies like this. Just good ol' fashioned badassery fun with a kickass female lead that knows exactly what it is and doesn't try to shove incoherent pretentiousness in the audience's face **coughcoughLUCYcoughcough**. Just give me a fun, mean action thriller with well choreographed, innovative action scenes and I'm happy.

Fight scenes are staged but the idea is for them to not look so when you watch the finished product, the fottage on the stairs in the clip looks very slow and more like a run through with each person doing a very obvious feed to each exchange, compare that with the stairwell fights in Civil War and Daredevil season 2 and they look vastly more visceral and competetive.

Again I wonder if ordinary movie-goers, who don't tend to analyze this stuff to death, will think that (especially in the context of the actual film). I kind of doubt it.

Eh, I'd consider myself an ordinary movie goer, I have only watched the trailer once and it was obvious how poor that sequence looked in comparison to the ones I mentioned, I don't think regular movie goers who watch films like John Wick and The Raid won't notice, it looks like a practice run rather than a fight.

Yeah, that's certainly part of it.
I know for sure, it was distracting seeing that first gun shot splatter some blood, but the guy is neither bleeding nor fights as if he's wounded.
Dig further and maybe Theron rebounded too quick whenever she has to react to unblocked hits.
Plus, you may even notice some obvious no contact moves.

Everyone on Twitter is a huge cinephile. :o

Every damn person has a phone when I go to the theater. It is damn irritating. :funny:

Not really. The ordinary movie goer don't do that stuff. I know, I speak to "them" at work, at parties and such but maybe it's also a matter of age, my acquaintances are not young people.

You edited a post to make another with a quote... Why didn't you just edit the quote into the other post? :funny:

I like the sense of momentum and weight in the blows, it makes the semblance of impact more believable. That Charlize is a tall woman may help with that, as she has some mass behind her motion despite her lean physique. A nice contrast with things like Salt where the punches delivered by the lead were ridiculously unbelievable. I prefer a big of over-choreography where the moves are at least convincing that scenes like the recent cage fight clip feauturing Colleen Wing had flashy but truly absurd inertia-less physics.

Eh... It all looks fine to me. I think in that hallway fight that Theron's character is fighting with severe injuries of one kind or another. It gives off that vibe the way the trailer presents it.

Reviews have been positive coming out of SXSW
