Cheerleading, I don't quite get it... Someone help me solve this infernal riddle...

To the max?

Kids still saying that these days?

What constitutes a sport is left up to criteria known only and solely by me, and it may be different if I so choose it. Poker is not a sport. Neither is bowling. Women's field hockey is a sport. Badminton is not. I think we all see the logic in my though process, here, and realize it is with flaw.

There, fixed it. ;) :D

To me it something that has a goal and someone in the end wins. The criteria you posted while interesting seems more artistic in nature. I don't know it feels like Cheerleading loses it's umph when it becomes something within itself... But then again that's chauvinistic in nature I suppose... Girls cheering on Guys etc... But taking something like that and trying to flip it around doesn't really solve the problem...
A sport is a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules and often engaged in competitively. Sports are also used as a form of entertainment for the participants as well as for the viewer. I think cheerleading fits that... at the competitive level at least. Girls cheering on guys are things of the past. Although it's still predominantly female, at competitive level, there are male participants too.

Uhh... I didn't read your first post to be honest... too long (:O) but in about 5 words, tell me what the problem is? Thanks. :)

your right it is odd for them to do that at such a young age,it doesnt make any sense either but alot of coaches are incorperating sex appeal into elementary acts, thiers a documentary about it comin out and im sure after that somone will make a big deal out of it.

Ahh... I see the problem now. I don't watch little kids doing cheerleading. I don't condone the exhibition of sexuality at such a young age. I didn't get into it until my last two years of HS and first two years of college.

The fact that Cheerleading is an amalgram of Gynastics and Dancing, and seems to have an identity crisis as whether it's a sport or some type of artistic expression.

Also the fact that little girls are dancing like pole dancers :(

Identity crisis, eh? Ahh... no wonder I fit in so well in that sport... uhh... not sport, sport... not sport... ugh!!

As I mentioned in my other post, I do not codone the display of sexuality from little girls.

You called, honey?

Actually I do. :o

Mmmm, pre-prepubescent cheerleaders, I get older, but they always stay the same age.

The thing is there's a point to it... How the hell do you grade cheerleading? There's usually a winner in sports, gynastics has it's goal, dance is artistic, what is cheerleading? Don't get me wrong I have respect for cheerleading, it takes quite a bit to do it, especially in highschool with homework and what not, I just don't see how or why it's a sport? As if it's not a sport, then it's soemthing less than other organized activities.

Errr....I'd hardly compare cheerleading to gymnastics. Balancing on some guys hands and doing a cartwheel aren't exactly the same as the things gymnasts train for years to do. I won't deny that there is athleticism involved in cheerleading, though, but...if it's a sport...how do you determine the winner?

It's graded on whether or not we do all the required parts to the routine [including at least one cheer, one chant, one dance, one tumbling pass, one jump routine, and a few others things], the difficulty and execution of the stunts performed, the difficulty and execution of the dance. Being able to get the crowd involved will also add to points.

Usually, it's graded on a 10-point scale.

Actually, you'd be surprised how similar cheer and gymnastics can be... Almost everyone on all the teams I've been on have been cheerleaders, and usually the higher level gymnasts had much better chances of getting on the teams. Gymnastics is more based on solo routines, hence the need for more props. Cheer is well... More ****ty .

While I agree that it's ventured VERY deeply into a "displays of sexuality," I'd hardly say it isn't a sport.

Not any ol' fatty can get up and win a gold medal in cheer.

It's not an incredibly hard sport to be a part of, but it's not easy by any means either.

Hey, I am going out for the cheerleading team :cmad: In fact, I just got back from it 20 minutes ago. :oldrazz:

I do agree its kind of creepy to see little 5 year olds to go at it but its still cute. But its not as creepy as those 5 year old girls in beauty pagents...God, they look like life-like barbie dolls.

If I were to go by the definition of what a sport is, I'd say Cheeerleading qualifies as a sport but if course it is not on the same level as competitive gymnastics although gymnastics are involved. Anyway, it doesn't matter what people want to define it as, all I know is, it's not as easy as it looks and atheleticism is involved. Definitey more physically strenuous than either golf or poker or bowling, I'd say. Are you a cheerleader?

That's what I've been telling him but he won't listen!
I think he secretly wants to be a cheerleader. :o

Yep... I've been one since I was 15.

But yes, you're right in the sense that cheelreading can't hold a stick to high levels of gymnastics competition. It's a hard sport to learn, even harder to become one of the best at, but certainly not the most difficult to do.

People also don't realize how hard it is on the guys... Everyone so far seems to think it's a matter of throwing a guy and catching her a certain way, but I can't tell you how many elbows, low blows, and damned near broken joints I've received from it. It's rough, especially when you're on teams that normally doesn't do partner stunting.

Hell, I dislocated my thumb a couple months ago... I threw a my partner up into a Chair Sit, and as she was coming down, her shorts were already riding so her bloomers caught my thumb and pulled it out of the joint.

Nice little story to tell the kids. A girl's panties pulled my finger.

When every cheerleader on the squad can do this:

this:

and this:

Then maybe I'll consider cheerleaders on par in skill with gymnasts. Hell, I'll even maybe call it a sport. But probably not. :)
