Sequels Chris Young - should we keep him or lose him?

Keep Chris Young (SM3's musical composer)

  • YES!!...I loved his music

  • NO, that music was crap

  • I don't care if he stays or not.

The black Spider-Man theme was horrible and so was the symbiote's theme. The birth of Sandman was the only good thing.

Unlike SM1 and SM2, at least SM3 had one theme to like. :hehe:
Eh not really. Similar to his Batman 89 theme or not, Elfman's main theme still puts all of Young's themes to shame. I mean, in the opening title sequence of SM3 you can tell exactly where the theme starts to get really ****ty. And that's where Young's work was added.

No...the music when Spider-Man is swinging to fight Ock at the clock tower is amazing:o Doc Ock's theme was also great.

Come on now, do you really want to do this to yourself? If his score is similar to Batman's, he's already failed. Slap a band-aid on his ass, because he's bleeding repetitiousness. :p

I agree. Doc Ock's theme is great. There's a malice to it, but there's also a deep sadness flowing underneath.

Young did some good work on SM2. I perferred his music for the train fight over Elfman's original music for that scene.

I liked Young's music for SM2 and SM3. Keep him.

I think the reason why many didn't like Young's score for S-M 3 was that it was too different and distinct from Elfman's style -- particularly the strong brass and woodwind usage in the action sequences. And even if they don't ask Young back for 4 or 5, whoever chosen to score it will have to keep the main theme.

And I actually prefer Young's arrangement of the main title sequence incorporating the black Spidey and Sandman themes, and Young's arrangement of the main theme was present at least four times in the film (one time during the crane accident, two during the first Spidey/Sandman fight and the final one where Peter takes off the black suit in the church). And I liked Young's love theme, more romantic than Elfman's affectionate longing motif.

So if everything turns out bright for Young, I say bring him back to score S-M 4 and 5. I think he'll do a better job if the Sony music execs don't interfere.

are you kidding me?
teh black suit theme in noooo way was fitting the tone of the movie. so what if he wa dancing and he was EMO.
its the darkest movie and has the cheesiest music.

the black suit theme was a disaster and it fails IMO on every level. the scene where he is looking at the reflection should have been epic-dark. but then the music starts and it pulls you out of the scene.

You realize, of course, that if Raimi had thought the theme was inappropriate he would have rejected it? Like I said before, in SM3 the black suit and "emo Peter" was presented as a very campy, jazz-age type of character. Completely intentionally. The over-the-top theme was constructed specifically to reflect that.

In itself it's a good song. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the movie because jazz-age-Peter was an awful creative direction. If it had been inconsistent with the intended presentation, it would have been rejected like numerous other scores that didn't make it into the movie.

And you do realize that Raimi makes mistakes?...which is why SM3 was all together, such a bad film.

The music was NOT fitting for Peter Parker's dark side. I think the smarter thing to do would to make it a dark variation of Spider-man's theme. So all together it would be an original theme but you can find faint hints of Spider-man's theme within it. This would indicate that even though Spider-man was dark and evil, deep inside Peter Parker was still inside there.

Secondly, the music during the fight scene was faaarrr too chaotic. The battle between Peter Parker and Harry sounded like fluff, it was as if it were just 'any other fight' spider-man has....when in fact 'Harry vs Peter' has been hyped up since the end of SM1. He should of taken it more serious, instead he gives a repulsive cacophony of noise making the scenes seem more frivolous then they already are.

What SM4 needs is a good composer. I think Elfman is a good composer but I doubt he'll return, so I hope Raimi searches for someone new. A musical score is suppose to amplify the quality of a film's scenes....and Young's music has done anything but.

And yes, Doc Ock's theme is another great piece in Elfman's score for SM1 and SM2. It sounded like something from a 1950's scifi/horror film and thats what you think when you see Dr.Octopus...what a freak! However in some instances its very human and I like how they tie together Peter's and Ock's theme at the end of the film...they are so similar just one turned evil and the other good.

Doc Ock's theme was awesome. I have it on my iPod :otto:

Let him go. Bring back Elfman or someone else.

And please...DON`T USE THE MAIN THEME SO MUCH.

Honestly, I feel in SM3 the main theme was way overused.

Obviously, considering I said this:

I think Young made the best of the (poor) material he was given to work with. SM3's characterization and tone may have been grossly inappropriate but you can't use that a reason to say the score is bad. The score is perfect for the type of movie SM3 wanted to be. The problem was just that SM3 was, well, poor.

I thought that Young's score was good overall, but I think he can be easily replaced.

Voted 'yes', I liked the black suit theme a lot, simple and effective, also liked the other themes folk pointed out, church scene, Birth of Sandman. Also, I watched Elfman's original train fight music from SM2 over the scene on youtube and it was a bit lacking, CY's re-do was so much better. He deserves another go, never had a problem with the music for Spidey3.

some of his stuff was great, birth of sandman, some of the blacksuit, but mostly i wasnt impressed. I like to see a different composer all together honestly.

^Yes that is putting it mildly, haha. I don't know about almost quitting but he did say Raimi went from his second favorite director to collaborate with to easily his worst. He was really upset with him because Raimi was replacing his music with Chris Young's inferior music. And he says Raimi was a complete jerk to him during SM2 post production...so yeah, Im sure he wont be back.

But new composer!!! I want a new composer, there are so many composers out there who are better than young.

The constant usage of Elfman's main theme in S-M 3 wasn't Young's fault. During the last phases of post-production with visual effects still being rendered, Sony music executives temped in cues from the first two S-M films. And in addition to that, Steve Bartek recorded new arrangements of Elfman's scores from S-M 1 and 2 and on top of that, Deborah Lurie and John Debney wrote new material incorporating Elfman's love theme for scenes in S-M 3. (The final piece was confirmed in an interview by Young, and there's also a promotional CD by Lurie floating around that has her music composed for S-M 3.)

All while Young was still composing music for the big final battle scene, no less. If he comes back for a second go-round, I pray that Sony will keep their hands off and let him do his own thing.
