Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer

I'm not surprised by this, he and Emma have definitely been hinting at that through awards season.

Another little clue-- I saw one interview (forget which) where someone asked him if he was considering going smaller after something so "huge" like Oppie. He politely reminded the interviewer that Oppenheimer is actually on the smaller end of the scales he's worked at at this stage in his career, closer to something like Dunkirk.

I'm reading between the lines that he's about to cash dat blank check for another ambitious blockbuster. But we'll see!
Where my Nolan Lovecraftian-esque flick?

If he is really in the mood to do a big blockbuster... It's sad because the perfect franchise is right there just waiting for a reboot.
I would love to see Nolan's take on Bond, especially since they were clearly influenced by his work with Skyfall in particular. I know that the creative control thing would be a big negotiating point but it could very well be beneficial for both parties if they came to an agreement.

Personally, I think it's too soon coming off of Tenet for Bond and also too soon coming off a very Nolan-inspired era of Bond. The pairing makes all the sense in the world but I think the timing could be better. Or maybe it'll just be one of those things that make a lot of sense but never happens, like Fincher doing Batman.

Don't get me wrong though, I'd absolutely love to see a Nolan Bond. But I think for right now, I still crave something original from him a bit more.

I hope his uncle will reprise his 1967 role as "Young Guest" for it if true. :o

I looked it up and there was actually a modern take on The Prisoner. It was a miniseries back in 2009 that starred Ian McKellen and....ugh....Jim Caviezel.

I predict that all of these rumors about his next project are going to end up being wrong. They usually are.

A truly modern, Nolan-y blockbuster take on The Prisoner would be pretty dope though, always wondered if he'd ever return to that.

I remember it being bland AF. McKellen was great though. Obviously.
I consider him to be in the category of actors who still give it their all even if the project isn't good. Case in point, X-Men: The Last Stand.

Nolan has already worked w WB again (and has a relationship w Zaslav) so I can see him going to whomever gives him the money, the budget and the release window he wants. Don't think he's now relentlessly loyal to Universal either.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure a guy who broke his 20 relationship with the studio over their unilaterally releasing films on Max is not going to be a fan of WBD shelving well received finished films for tax write off purposes.

Lol sure? He’s sat down and done business with the same guy that did that. He just made a deal to rerelease Tenet on IMAX and may do it again for Interstellar this year. Idk if he cares about Wile. E Coyote or Batgirl that much tbh w you. He knows that won’t happen to him just like how Cruise and PTA know it.

He wants his budget and his release window. He’ll go to the studio that offers the best deal.

How soon after Tenet did Oppenheimer get announced? I honestly forgot.

December 2020 was the HBO Max simultaneous release announcement.
January was the start of the rumors that Nolan would jump ship.
September was the Oppenheimer Universal announcement.

Thanks. I remember the announcement but not the date. So we could get an idea maybe by the fall or something. Depends on how far along Chris is.

I personally am not super interested in a Nolan Bond movie and would prefer him to do something else. I also don't think he really wants to make a Bond film at this point, even though he clearly loves that franchise dearly.

However, there will never be as good of a time for Nolan to make a Bond film as right now. The timing could not be better for him.

- Previous Bond continuity has ended definitively. That story is done. Time for a new story.
- Next Bond film(s) will be a creative reset of some kind.
- Nolan would have the ability to put his own stamp on the franchise, without working within the confines of a previously established continuity or aesthetic.
- Most importantly, he'd be able to have a say in the casting of his James Bond. I think this would be extremely important for Nolan to even consider making a Bond film.

The above conditions will potentially not present themselves again for another 15 years or so. So if Nolan was truly interested in doing this, now would be the time. I kind of feel like he has internally accepted that he will likely never try to do a Bond film, though. That's just the vibe I get from him.

I actually think it would be kind of cool if he did it real late in his career. In 15 years he'll still be in his 60s. Martin Campbell made Casino Royale in his 60s, so there's precedent.

That's kind of how I see it going, if it happens. It wouldn't be this time around (he's already confirmed that the recent Bond rumors are false), but maybe the next reset, if the stars align. But it almost might never happen, which I'm also okay with.
