Documentary/Biopic Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer

Just watched Chris Stuckmen's review and he mentioned the sound mix is off again. Seems like most other reviews don't see it as a problem. I gather this will come down to your personal cinema's sound system. He mentioned 70% of the speech was inaudible thats actually ridiculous
Yeah that was interesting to me because another review I watched specifically mentioned not having that problem (Jeremy jahns I believe). But then again I didn’t have that problem with Tenet when I saw it both on Blu-ray and in imax at Lincoln square when it finally came out (except for one line during the boat scene).

I do have a feeling this is gonna be the type of movie that is more tailored for cinephiles and the GA might have more of a varied reaction to. Just a guess though.

But like...I don't know, I feel like you should know what you're getting into with a movie like this. I saw a few criticisms finding fault that "the history is dense", or that it's "men in rooms talking", I just can't help but think...you do know this a movie about the Manhattan Project right? Pretty sure you're just talking about Nolan understanding the assignment.

I think one of the bad things with the line between professional critic and vlogger/influencer blurring is a lot of people don't seem to know how to separate "this isn't my type of movie" with understanding how to evaluate what a movie is actually bringing to the table and just giving a somewhat uninformed opinion for the sake of weighing in on 'the conversation', which then dilutes the conversation.

Tried to get IMAX tickets for the one in NYC and it’s basically sold out every weekend for the next month. Insane

92% Fresh now at RT after 144 reviews. I expect it drop closer to Barbie for the lols.

It's going to have huge legs in August. Might make 200+.

Well. This was incredible. I hate biopics, so I guess my hype was a little lower for this than previous Nolan films. But this is by far the most compelling "biopic" I've ever seen. It might not be my favorite of his films for rewatchability due to subject matter, but I would say it is his best film. Cillian was great throughout of course, as was the whole ensemble (save for one brief cameo that kinda stuck out like sore thumb), but Emily Blunt and RDJ were the standouts for me.

One notable complaint: The sound issue with the dialogue/music mixing is still a thing. Not as bad as it was with Tenet, but it's still there. I definitely missed some dialogue in parts due to it. That said, see in IMAX if at all possible. The imagery filling that whole screen - including simple close-ups - are totally worth it. As is Ludwig's score, and most of the sound mixing/editing is incredibly powerful.

Let me guess

It's Gary Oldman as Truman?

The IMAX talk again reminded me of that Sweden doesn't have a theater with the 1.43:1 format and this time it got me curious how common that is, so I looked up a list of all the IMAX venues. There's an astounding lack of theaters that have the full IMAX format in the world, and it seems like it's only available at all in 17 countries (where a lot of those only have a single one). That was worse than I thought.

It does get a bit funny when some filmmakers that love theaters talk about how it's an experience that brings us together, and then they make films where so few of the audience has a chance to see them as they were intended to be seen.

It doesn't bother me much though. The main life of a film lies in home viewing these days and that format is almost never 1.43:1 so the wider format is how the films live on anyway.

Just watched this interview of Oppenheimer from 1965 and it's crazy, almost eerie how relevant everything he's talking about still is.

Welp, unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the IMAX showing tonight, so i'll have to settle for a normal theater showing later today. Just my luck haha. This is the second time it's happened to me.

Yeah I doubt I’ll wait til I can see it in IMAX. So will have to watch it on a plain old theater screen
I've had a great experience with Nolans films even without Imax, so it's not the end of the world for me haha.

I'm considering double dipping with this one and seeing it in a regular screen this weekend before going to the IMAX showing I have tickets for next Friday. That's if I have time because ideally I want to see Barbie this weekend too.

My double feature is on Saturday and I'm probably gonna watch stuff I've been meaning to get to in the meantime.

My local cinema has a premium large format screen with Dolby Atmos so I'm considering that. The only issue is there was a huge oversight when they remodeled that theater so now the sun sometimes glares on that specific screen during a sunset. I couldn't believe it when I saw The Batman. I might take a chance tonight and do that, and HOPEFULLY there's no issues now.

I've got tickets tonight for LieMax. Am hoping to see in real 70mm in TO when I am on vacation next month. How long is Oppenheimer's exclusive IMAX period?
