Documentary/Biopic Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer

If I liked the film more these would definitely be framed. Perhaps on a second viewing.

Ok! Overall i liked the movie but i have to admit I struggled with it a bit (like a lot of nolan’s recent movies lol). Through no fault of the film i got a bit lost in all the exposition and political machinations on who is who and who is doing what and who is betraying who. But again, not the film’s fault, my brain just has a hard time processing and retaining these kinda of things without close caption :funny:.

But the mood, cinematography, music and Cillian’s incredible performance kept me anchored when all the politics and nuclear physics talk got my head spinning. Cillian really did a phenomenal job playing a man wrestling with such an incredible guilt. Definitely a movie with a lot to process and demands a second watch I think.

I went and saw Oppenheimer a couple of days ago. I drove 3 hours to watch it in the only 70mm Imax theater in Florida. It was absolutely breathtaking. This was my 2nd time watching it. I watched it the first time in 70mm in Orlando. I made the mistake of thinking 70mm and 70mm Imax are the same thing. They're not. The biggest difference between the two formats imo was the sound. As good as the picture was, I think the sound was even better.

I have to say, having now seen this, I am REALLY shocked that this is doing the gangbusters business its doing. Not because its not a good movie and doenst deserve it but this is so not what typical mass audiences want to see. A 3 hour, talky, sciency, brainy biopic with a very cerebral main character just isn't what I pictured audiences gravitating towards. The guy that was sitting next to me was sighing heavily throughout the film and you could feel he was getting restless and yet when credits rolled the most of the people in the audience clapped. There's something about this movie that's touching people in the right spot and I think only Nolan could do something like this with his style of filmmaking. I cant put my finger on it, though. But I think this very same movie in another filmmaker's hands would have bored people to tears.

Makes me now wonder if Tenet had come out in a normal moviegoing environment would that movie have done gangbusters, too.

Looks like National Cinema Day was enough to push Oppy to $300M. It was #4 this weekend with $9M, right at $300M domestic...

Will soon pass both Deadpools on the top-grossing r-rated list. I wonder if Oppenheimer will get much of a boost from China...

I’m looking forward to seeing this again but haven’t got time for another 3 hour cinema showing. Looking forward to having it available for home release.

So this will be the no.1 R-rated film even without China? Great if so. I’m not sure if Nolan has much a name there.

This is how it looks as of now for R rated films.

Shows how well this has done - as you get down to 20th the numbers are so much less. Really rarified company being in the 700s (and counting!) as a R film.

Joker grossing a billion still fascinates me. I can't believe it made that much.

Okay, I am surprised to see Fifty Shades and The Hangover Part II on that list.
The Hangover was hugely popular, I think at the time Part II's opening weekend was second only to The Matrix Reloaded as far as R rated films go. I'm more surprised to see Troy hanging in there in the top 20. For whatever reason I don't remember that movie doing that well.

I think other than the popularity of the character worldwide, the fact that American media tried to fearmonger it so much before release backfired tremendously because it just made people more curious to see it. And, shocker, people who saw it didn't develop the urge to become mass shooters.

Joaquin’s performance also was a huge factor in word of mouth for people coming to check it out.

So curious how the sequel does with Lady Gaga and it being a musical added to the mix, can it make a billion as well.

I can't predict the box office or whether Warner Bros can capture lightning in a bottle twice but I do think that Gaga's Little Monsters fandom will definitely be a boost for Joker 2's box office. Fans who next to nothing or maybe never even saw the first Joker film may show up for Gaga alone.

Ι'll be surprised if Folie à Deux makes even half of what the first film made.

I get the appeal but I'm still surprised it passed $700M WW. It's not exactly a fun "I want to go back and see this multiple times" kind of blockbuster like No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick or Barbie.

I think Gaga's fanbase will account for a good amount of its box office. If it's well received critically a billion is certainly on the table given the response to the first one.

True. A top Joker acting performance would likely get a lot of people through the door even if they weren’t otherwise tempted to go to the cinema for it.

I think those factors at least give the sequel a chance to differentiate itself very strongly and give it a shot at a strong box office, although I wouldn’t be all that surprised whatever the result.
