Fantasy Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey

I think even if not the most fresh and exciting name, Damon does have a certain screen presence and familiarity that can help ground a movie— which might help if this is another high-concept ambitious one. And I think he was great in both Nolan movies he’s been in so far. Let’s see what sort of cast he puts around him.

Matt Damon isn't the most exciting name but he's usually good/great at least. For me this feels a bit similar to Leo in Inception who is another actor I think is "great but not amazing" but it's also hard to say much more about Damon being in this considering we don't know more information. What is the movie about? What genre? Who are the supporting actors?

I was a bit afraid to share this given his popularity, but while I have nothing against Leo and sincerely think he's a solid and dedicated actor.... I'm just never wowed. I'm going to get s*** for this, but let's just say I don't get his charisma. He's not doing anything wrong, yet I always feel like I'm watching an actor if that make sense?

And Damon is exactly the same. But that's far from worrying me about Nolan's next film.

Actually, to say something even more unpopular, I just hope this next film will have a much less bloated script than the director's last two or three projects...
I love his ambitions as a filmmaker, but to me, his films were tighter when he was sharing the script credits.

Definitely not 3. Dunkirk is about as tight and stripped down as it gets for a modern "blockbuster".

Oh yeah, you're completely right about that.

Actually, I didn't express myself properly: I've always been a Nolan aficionado, but since he's found himself writing on his own again, i.e. since Dunkirk, I've started to “see” what his long-standing detractors were criticizing him for.

Mind you, I still enjoy his films (apart Tenet which I just can't get into), he really is a monster of a filmmaker and his reputation is well deserved.
But I think, modestly, that he can tend to apply himself too much to the “construction game” of his stories rather than its narrative fluidity, which, for me, has also made it harder to find the heart of this latest series of films. I guess that's where a co-writer could have an input, as a kind of lookout... 🤷‍♂️

Again, just my opinion, I'm not trying to convince anyone. ^^
My favorites of his films remain The Prestige and Interstellar and I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of universe he'll touch next!

Warner watching this happen, swallowing a sob, a tear running down his clown make-up...
Its their own fault
The Zaslav era has given Nolan plenty of reasons to feel justified about walking away, but honestly?

Doing so over the day-and-date releases in 2021 when they bent over backwards releasing Tenet his way at the height of the pandemic? Still strikes me as somewhat petulant.

It wasn’t so much as why they did it, but how they did it. It’s other filmmakers that it affected and that they didn’t give a heads up to them until the press release was already out there. A lot of them were thrown without even the decency of a curtesy phone call.

Regardless of how all that stuff went down, the bottom line is that Warner needs a guy like Nolan more than he needs Warner. He had all the studios (including Warner) bidding on the Oppenheimer project. They all wanted it. Universal is a good spot for him at the moment. See how it goes over time.

Ouch for WB. That said, Nolan is a very secretive guy with his scripts. It’s kind of crazy that he had the Oppy project on the open market bidding among at least 6 different companies. Maybe he figured there is already a book about Oppenheimer. If this new project is an original story, he will want to prevent leaks of the story. So you don’t show the script to other studios. It’s not like he has a good reason to dump Universal after their major success last year.

Lol as if Nolan's scripts are dipped in gold.

I mean, beyond just the book but it was based on real life events. It wasn't necessary to be secretive with the script for Oppenheimer considering it's a biopic.

Yep, much easier to share your script with 5+ companies in this situation. I’m hoping this new one is original. Bring on the secrecy! Lol

Yeah I'd bet money that his next one is an original. I definitely want him to do more historical films like Oppenheimer and Dunkirk but not consecutively. I could actually seeing him pulling a Scorsese and leaning more on historical/biopic films later in his career.

There was a level of secrecy around Oppenheimer too as far as I recall. We didn't get the information of what the project was about straight away.

I think it mostly had to do with Nolan searching for a production company at that moment. He's found his home at Universal now, he doesn't need to show it to other people.

Let’s not forget that the whole reason we got Barbenheimer was WB trying to stick it to Nolan. If he knew there was a low chance he’d make the film there I don’t blame him for keeping them at arm’s length with regards to knowledge about the project.

I mean that's from Word of Reel so the chances of it being real are extremely low. However, aerial combats like in Dunkirk but with futuristic landscape is very visually engaging at least, so I'd be down for that personally.
