Circuit City to close 69 stores

Never liked Circut City the few times I shopped there, always been more loyal to Best Buy. I do all my research beforehand, so don't need any customer assistance anyway. Only thing that slightly annoyed me was the only Circut City I know of close by me was closing down so I couldn't get the free Microsoft points buying Gears of War 2 there, so went to the Best Buy a block away and bought it there.

i used to work at circuit city. i was in the warehouse which was a sweet job at first but then a lot of the management changed and the new store manager was a total *****e. a lot of changes came with the new management and my position was re-named from warehouse associate to product flow specialist which included all my previous warehouse duties, but each of us was now also responsible for the upkeep of certain sections of the store. restocking that section, updating price tags, etc. that's not all that came with the change in title, for which i got no addition pay of course, we now also had to come in 2 hours early on sundays just to put up all the new sale tags. we were also given the additional weekly tasks of counting stock and doing inventory which was previously done by managers. additionally while in the past we only had to unload the trucks and the employees from each department would stock the merchandise, the new title required that we do all that work. so all that bs topped with the new manager *****e and i was getting pretty fed up.

the day i finally decided to quit, the elevator had been broken for like 2 or 3 days and wasn't going to be fixed for another day so we were forced to take the stairs. the warehouse was in the basement. that meant me and some other dude carrying 50" tvs and 150 pound tv stands up this narrow stairway. what made things worse was that it was truck day so we had to take all the merchandise (more tvs and stands included) down the stairs. so i'm bustin my ass as i always do and the store manager calls me in to his office to tell me some random bs. he notices i don't have my name tag and proceeds to tell me all about how important the name tag is. thing is, i always wear it and actually just happened to forget it that one day. of course he wouldn't know that because he barely paid attention to his employees outside of ordering them around and funny thing about it is that in the prior months, nobody wore name tags and he didn't give a damn. but in recent weeks, corporate stated coming around so now he starts punishing people for not wearing their name tag. he told me to go home and get my name tag and come back right away. i never did go back. that place was a joke.

I would have said my nametag must have gotten ripped off while I was carrying these heavy ass tv's down a flight of narrow steps! So maybe you should make me another.
I do that all the time at work when they get on me about my name tag where I work.

yeah, but i was fed up with the place at that point anyway and i wanted to leave... and they didn't have any more tags. he probably wouldn't have believed it anyway. it's not just the fact that i was being sent home for not having my name tag, it's that it happened while the elevator was broken and this dude wants to send me home when there's all this work to do and then when it doesn't get done in the proper time frame he gets mad anyway. twas a lose-lose situation. **** circuit city!

That happened to me at Best Buy too, once the Christmas season started we were told we'd have not only unload the truck, but stock the inventory as well. First time I had to do that I was there until around 2am. Although that's the last time I did it, I was in my last semester of college about to move back home, so after Thanksgiving weekend I just stopped showing up to work. Loved picking up the phone the second day I skipped work to tell them I quit. Although I did get employee of the month once, best part was I showed up to the meeting still drunk from the night before.

Does anybody care about Circuit City anymore?

Not like I've bought anything there for years anyway. I usually go to Best Buy.

That's what I mean, I feel like Best Buy has just crushed it.

So... when is it going to be a good time to get good deals on some flat screen HD TV's?

I never liked Circuit City, the employees are never as helpful or friendly as those of Best Buy.

It seems like it got stuck in the 90s and never made its way out.

I go to Circuit City since it's closer to me than Best Buy

The day Best Buy starts to go under is the day I'll start getting worried. I love BB.

This is a sad news, as another big retail store closing its doors for good thanks to this awful economy. With that said, though, I'll be keeping an eye out for CC's liquidation plan so I can pick up some electronics and games at a deep discounted price.

Circuit City never really figured out how to compete with Best Buy. On every level, BB just seems like a more attractive option.

Although, Im furious that a lot of Best Buys have slashed their cd and dvd sections into about a third of what the used to be.

I don't care as long as those annoying page-consuming ads they have on the Hype keep jumping out at me.

Last year, I bought both my laptop and Tivo at Circuit City. Best Buy might have more flashy appeal, but their service is horrible.

Well, the entire chain is going under now. So long, C.C. we hardly knew ye.

I bought our smaller TV at Circuit City because they had a price on the model I wanted that beat Best Buy. However, the extended warranty they kept pushing was almost half the cost of the TV whereas Best Buy's extended warranties aren't over-priced on big ticket items (glad I didn't go for CC's extended warranty since they're going out of business). Guess I'll keep an eye on CC for good deals on discounted stuff.

I would assume within the month. I'll be hitting up a Surround Sound

I do have one positive memory of Circuit City. I remember a friend and I walked into one somewhere and every female that worked there looked like they had just stepped out of a Playboy magazine and put on a uniform. We dubbed it The Land Of Milk And Honey, because it was indeed heaven on earth. My friend bought Johnny Paycheck's Greatest Hits and never lived it down.

I think people like the look of a store when they prefer it over another and things cost more there...IE, people who like Best Buy.

Over a month ago, I brought a network router from a local CC near my house (which only opened around summer of last year). The sales rep couldn't be more helpful, and he explained the routers with great patience. It's sad to know that that store will be closed eventually, like every CC stores out there.

Bloomberg reports that Circuit City Stores Inc. has hired a quartet of liquidators to sell off its existing merchandise, pending a green light from the courts. If everything goes according to plan, the fire sale will start Saturday and continue through the end of March, according to CNNMoney.com.
