Cliches, tropes, and trends that you actually enjoy?

I miss that thing they used to do in action movies where the heroes come in by crashing through the window.
LOL Love the window smashing entrance or exit!
Obviously over done endless trope done in every movie, ...will they ever stop using it? No!
Would like to see them all collected!
Although there is probably to many, some random favorites;

Damsel in distress.

If she aint annoying, it makes the character even better. I'm cool with just the female character being the love interest.

Rom com rushes to be together at the end of the film via taxi, or running, usually with an airport involved.

Femme Fatales

Inspiring halftime / OT speeches if well written

Dumb bimbo teenagers humping

I love the Old Dark House kind of cliche in horror movies. The kinda thing where a bunch of unsuspecting so-and-so's end up in a house full of crazy people and die. I find it kind of an endearing setup for that kind of film. It's been done a trillion times, but I enjoy it still.

Grumpy-as-all-hell character with a heart of gold.
Off forums, that's me (I tell myself)...

Is there a corresponding 'Cliches, tropes, and trends that you actually hate' thread?

I absolutely hate two things that I see actors do in films:-

- the side to side neck crack to show that a character means business/is a badass

- the oh so cool holding of the gun sideways, just to look edgy.

There are a lot, but off the top of my head:

1 - Fights in the rain. They get me pumped as hell and I just love the aesthetic.

2 - Armies charging toward each other directly. Military and strategically speaking, I know it's stupid, but damn if it doesn't make for a great setpiece.

3 - Badass, glum, emotionally closed-off male character who has a tragic backstory and eventually learns to open up to people again and develop a strong platonic bond with someone, especially with a kid.

Pascal, with Mandalorian and Last of Us; Mando & Grogu, Joel & Ellie, has for some reason currently become the poster boy for that narrative trope.
Though lots of fantastic ones informed it, just to name a few favs;

1930s Comics:
Popeye & Swee'pee,
Tracey & Jr.,
Batman & Robin
Film:
1968 True Grit: Rooster Cogburn & Mattie Ross
1970 El Topo (starts off that way, yet then completely subverts it :funny:)
1970 obviously Lone Wolf and Cub
1981 Mad Max 2: Road Warrior slightly played at with the annoying Feral Kid, then even further with the whole Tribe in Thunderdome.
Does Indy & Short Round count ?
1986 Ripley & Newt in Aliens fem version underlying narrative.
1991 Terminator 2: somwhat takes on that role in Judgment Day
1994 Léon (a.k.a. The Professional)
1994- The Crow (& Sarah) does he count on a supernatural level?
2002 Road to Perdition

That ^ once noble knight, idealized, hopeful character, has for the most part been excised and forbidden in the modern zeitgeist.
Now it must be mocked, parodied, subverted and literally dragged through $%!#, by more cynical, hateful and bitter "creators", who never liked that character to begin with.

Although Cervantes already beautifully deconstructed and subverted that idealized vision, over 400 years ago, to better effect.
In truth, Ironically championing to see its honest return, despite a world cynically saying it no longer belongs.

Mando somewhat speaks to the return of that hopefull shining knight, though still with a foot in the darker anti-hero, depends where he lands.:cwink:

I haven't caught up with s3 yet, but I would absolutely say Mandalorian counts as a good example. Like, Knights In Shining Armor aren't always nice or polite, and they don't always come from unblemished backgrounds. Its the aspiration that matters most, and Din has consistently reached his greatest heights when he goes "I'm going to be a paladin today".

The go-to used to be shooting/cutting through a wall,
When that got played out, was then extended to the floor and dramatically dropping in.
Fun visual but with Ahsoka, we now about done with this one. :cwink:

One comedy gag that I always love goes something like the following:

Character's Brain: "Alright, you are in a sticky situation but you can get out of it if you just play it cool and intelligent."
Character's Mouth: *Says something incredibly stupid.*
Character's Brain: "Dammit!"

Bonus points if what they said actually works.

I love martial arts movies where the bad guys stand around and attack the hero one by one.
That makes think of a similar thing. Something that's used in a LOT of comic book adaptions.
Several bad guys attack the hero. They're usually really good fighters but he still overpowers them. He is able to tackle everybody to the ground, throw them into walls etc etc etc. Often in a violent way. It's evident that he's got the upper hand.
BUT they always get up and attack again and again and again, no matter how many times they get beat.
I'm like "why don't you just give up?" LOL

OR... when the hero has broken into the villain's headquarters and taken down a big group of henchmen. It's always a few more who comes along, one at a time, who think they are the lucky ones against the hero despite him already taken down a whole gang.
"Yeah, what makes you think YOU stand a chance when all the other, equally trained, henchmen didn't?"

And as a bonus. A number of guys with firearms, sometimes it's even soldiers on the good side. They shoot at something approaching them. Either some kind of vehicle or a superpowered guy/creature. This "threat" is evidently bulletproof and they clearly see that they're up against something/someone unstoppable, but they still continue to shoot.
Sigh, what do they hope to acchieve? LOL LOL
