Barker on Down, Satan!
Author-producer praises screenplay adaptation.
by Jim Vejvoda
March 4, 2009 - We reported last year that IGN's very own Christopher Monfette had penned a screenplay adaptation of Down, Satan! for author-film producer Clive Barker. Now the horror maestro has spoken out about the in-development project.
Originally published in Barker's early series of short fiction The Books of Blood, the parable-style Down, Satan! tells the story of a wealthy businessman named Gregorious who wakes one day to find God absent from his life. Driven to madness by depression and loss, Gregorious tempts the Lord by constructing a Hell on Earth or, New Hell in service to the Devil, hoping that the Lord would intervene. But as the torture chambers fill and the Devil refuses to show himself, Gregorious must confront his idea of faith.
In an interview with Bloody-Disgusting, Barker praised Monfette's adaptation of the short story. "He found a place in my head and heart instantly because he's so open and talented," the author said. "I find him an amazing presence to be in the room with."
Barker was reticent to say too much about the project, which is still in an early stage of development, "The reason I don't want to say too much is that the [original] story is five pages long. What Chris has done is mostly Chris. All I can tell you is that the things he has created are superb. When you see it, you go, 'Oh yes, of course.' It's organic, it grows naturally out of what's on the page, but it's brilliant."
