Does a University really need a Barnes & Noble, Starbucks, and Subway to name a few? Is this a college or a shopping center? What's next, an Apple store?

Colleges have always been a money making venture. If you want to talk about commercialism think of NYU which is slowly buying up the entire East Village and turning a great area sterile. The neighborhood is loosing it's identity, but an NYU student can say that yes, they have an apple store on campus because yes, it falls within the bounds of the college buildings.

I like having a Subway at my college. Would love a Barnes and Noble.

The colleges are just reflecting the students and the times we're living in.

These days kids are very comfortable with being consumers. Always concerned with staying current, looking for the next upgrade. It's not by accident either.

College is just a world inside the world we live in. Without the commericalism in today's society, colleges would not survive.

The first college I was going to go away to actually had a store where they sold ipods and mac. It was weird though because it was in the middle of a food/coffee shop.

Sorry for the slight derailment, but what identity is it losing? I figured that the hipster preppy *****ebag type that Apple/Starbucks attracts/spawns is the indigenous species there.

Actually, that's the indigenous species at most large universities like that, which makes this more on topic.

Guess you've never been to The Village then. It's where Hendrix owned his record studio, where the Rolling Stones recorded (hell, they have a picture of the St Marks Hotel on an album cover), Dylan got discovered playing in the West 4th subway station. You can't walk ten feet down there without some major bit of musical or art history.

I've been there. Had to take off my scarf because of the people there.

I don't buy books in Barnes and Noble. I sit and read.

I think most people do that these days. I can't remember the last time I bought a book. It's only a matter of time before the wrap books and we're all screwed.

I know I should ask because you didn't explain it just so someone would be baited into asking. Why did you have to remove your scarf? Or was it too hard to explain wearing your KKK scarf around?

Uh, not all universities are the same...

Those universities with the bookstores, restaurants, bookstores, shopping centers and whatnot, those are primarily for commuter schools. There's nothing wrong with having those places there. The stores help the university and the students and faculty use them.

Did you notice that FIU is sponsored by Pepsi now?

Did you know that in Germany college is free? As long as you have the good grades and the intellectual ability you will continue your education for free.

God bless America. :yay:

First off, the scarf thing is a joke, since scarfs are standard issue for the people there that fit my "preppy, hipster, etc." profile, and I wouldn't want to be like them.

Second, the KKK wear hoods, though I'm not sure why you're comparing me to them.

Third, I've been down there a good number of times, and each and every time, I make an effort to get what I need from there and leave. I really, really hate that portion of the city.

So do you just not like name brands because all these are essential to college students if you strip the name you have a bookstore, coffee shop and someplace to eat. Who cares if there's a name brand attached.

Oh I see, you think that being in The Village means you are a preppy or hipster so you must wear a scarf. I don't wear scarves nor am I any of those yet somehow I hang out over there. Odd huh.

Not exactly, but those are the type of people that frequent that area, and thus give it its feel. I don't like those people, thus I don't like that area.
