College is way overrated

There was an article in the Washington Post this weekend regarding how much 2008 college graduates are struggling to find work, and how it's pretty much the worst time to be entering the working world. Lucky me :csad:

I totally understand what you are going through. I graduated college in 2005 and have been working in a deli ever since. Things dont look to be improving either. My brother graduated in May and he works at Blockbuster. :csad:

I ran into this months ago. In Ohio, I couldn't even get a McJob. It is bad. But, I am in college. Not quite a grad.

At least in NY, I know someone and got a summer job. When I get back to Ohio, I may be screwed again.

What year did you graduate from college?

I have some savings, so this summer I've been unemployed and job hunting, but soon I think I'll have to get a ******** job while I search for a career :csad: It makes me mad...I'm extremely intelligent and work well with others dammit! :o :cmad::csad:

Haha, lack of common sense on my part! :oldrazz:

LoL, sure won't!

For those currently in college or just graduated, what did you/are you majoring in?

I am majoring to become a history teacher. I've thought about doing something else, but decided to at least get the degree first. I am two years in after all.

So, Spoons will NOT be the breadwinner then.

It's always tough getting that first job out of college. You're gonna get that frustrating catch-22, where they want you to have some experience, but how do you get that experience if you're unable to get a job because you lack experience. Don't worry too much though, it takes a few months to get that first job, just gotta keep working at it. Have you tried going to a temp office? I got my first job through one, might not get you something you totally want to do at first, but it'll at least get you working and some money in the pocket.

He has a great job right now  But yeah, I want a career too! :oldrazz:

I think a temp agency may be my next step. I'm certainly not going to go back to working retail for less than $7 an hour :down

I've always recommended doing some internship/co-op through your University. The University helps you get some sort of temp job, of course it's up to you "wow" them and hopefully they'd keep you after you graduate.

I did two internships, and both of the departments that I interned under loved me. I didn't want to live anywhere near my university, however, so I always knew I was doing it for the experience alone.

Good man!

When I started out, I double majored in Secondary education and broad field social science. After I came to my senses, I just became a History major. And here I am.

That is why I picked a major in which jobs are plentiful and will always be in demand.:cwink: I didn't lame out and get a business degree (sorry to those who were business majors).

In what year did the War of 1812 occurr?

I wish i started college in 9th grade, high school was actually the biggest scam ever! what a waste of 4 years..

I know...High School was a stupid waste of my time. If someone remembers or loves High School and talks about it to this day...then they are a d-bag.

Ha, I did the same thing as you. It's just hard to get an entry level job right now, period. My field is still in very high demand- for people with experience. No company wants to spend the money to train new employees.

What did you graduate with and what did you intend to do?

English- Writing and Rhetoric. It's a highly flexible major. I want to get into either technical writing (this can be done for any corporation), editing, public relations, or publishing. I could technically also pursue something in the marketing or journalism field, but I'd rather not. A large number of people with my degree pursue law, but I think I'd be miserable doing that :down

I had an awesome technical writing prof and she said she use to work for companies and she would construct memos and all sorts of other legal and business documents to be finalized because writing in the work force is extremely technical to achieve the highest level of prestige for a company.
