Competition in '08 for TIH

http://www.ifmagazine.com/new.asp?article=5131

The Day the Earth Stood Still has moved to XMAS 08.

THE SKINNY: Remember how we told you what the date for TRANSFORMERS 2 was going to be? Well, we were wrong – but we’ve got it right now. And hey, we’ll even throw in the release date for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, just to make things better!

Twentieth Century Fox has announced they’re going for a Christmas 2008 release for DAY, the remake of the 1951 classic. It still will star Keanu Reeves, though, so not much of a present there. The movie was originally set for a May 9 release date, though it’s not clear whether that was 2008 or 2009.

Paramount, however, are now touting June 26, 2009 for the release of TRANSFORMERS 2, even though there are still tensions between DreamWorks and Viacom that might threaten the project. Michael Bay is in final talks to direct the sequel in either case, Blu-ray or no Blu-ray. Whoo hoo! That’s Ultra-Magnificent! (And if you got that pun, god help you and me…)

The only thing that I am worried about regarding TIH and it release date is that the next 2 weekends are huge weekends for movies which may hurt it's boxoffice legs. Both Maxwell Smart and The Love Guru will have huge appeal with Steve Carrell and Mike Myers as the stars and then the next weekend is the release of Wanted, so IMHO the opening weekend for TIH is very, very important, if it is big and gets good word of mouth it will do well and have a good long run, but if it isn't it will fall quickly and be forgotten.

^ That's all counter programming and the Holiday weekend allows room for more films. It'll be fine.

It probably won't stand a chance against The Dark Knight, but I don't care. I'm hyping this film anyway.

It's like I've told people before...2008 is the chance for the geek in me to come out and actually enjoy going to the movies for the first time in a long time. Now going to the movies is actually going to be something more than just trying to pass time.

With The Dark Knight, Cloverfield, Speed Racer, Iron Man, Rambo, Where the Wild Things Are, 10,000 B.C. and The Incredible Hulk included...I'm just ready to see them all just to enjoy myself.

How well (if at all) TIH does in the theaters is up to anyone's guess but TDK will probably rule all...

Great post, it will be a movie year where a lot of people will be able to let the "geek" inside come out, lot's of movies to look forward to.

That is true, but still they do take people and cash away from TIH BO, then of course July 4th sees Hancock with Will Smith, and after this weekends opening of IAL it is pretty much assured that it will open huge, I just want it to do well, Hulks movie career is riding on it :cwink:

Well yeah the more options the more money gets spread out of course but anyone who wants to see a particular movie nowadays will get to see it because of the # of screens.

Yeah that is all that I am saying, with all the other options that are going to be out during it's release it will have to be a very good film and have a very big OW to make sure it does well at the BO.

I think it is going to be a great film.
