Could someone please help me diagnose and fix a problem with my computer - it keeps freezing! It can happen at any time and when anything is running (it sometimes freezes when I just leave it alone and do nothing). I have ran multiple virus/spyware/malware scans which have all found nothing, and I have cleaned up the registry and temporary files as well but it still keeps happening.

Heya,

What OS, how old is the computer, and all that jazz. =) Have you installed anything new lately? That can also cause a conflict of interest, even drivers! Also, late question, any BSOD's? If so, write down the error codes for this will be a big help, if there is any, or is it just a solid freeze?

There ya go,
Ali

have you made fundamental changes lately? installing a new video card? drivers to it or a sound card?
etc?

if you want to check what is using up most of your memory do
Ctrl Alt Del and go to Processes, if you want click mem usage 2 times and you can see what is using up your memory

The PC is around 4 years old
The screen is about 3 years old.
It's Windows XP
I did not install anything significant before the problem started and did not make any major changes prior to the problem starting either

There is no warning or error messages or anything. Everything just freezes suddenly. The problem has only gotten worse, and now the screen is pixelating alot whenever I turn the PC on as well.

maybe your virus scan isnt detecting what is causing the problem, have you updated your antivirus program?

first off is is hanging up and then freeing itself? or is it a hard freeze that forces a reboot?
by freezing is it just the mouse that quits working or does the keyboard freeze too?
I'd start by running memtest. and a full chkdsk with surface scan. (it is a windows system right?) if that doesn't turn up anything do you have any spare parts lying around that you can swap out the peripherals like video, lan and sound(if you have a soundcard and not a mb chip)

you could try a system restore back to a point before it started messing up that could be an option (if you have it turned on and a backup from the right date is available) but this sounds like a hardware problem to me. and it could be anything.
