"Conan the Barbarian" TV Series in development for Netflix

To sum it up, I'd like to see a Conan TV series have an identity beyond people calling it Game of Thrones in the Hyborian Age.

What people compare it to is irrelevant, so long as they like it. Before taking its place in the zeitgeist, even Game of Thrones was originally labeled "Sopranos meets Middle-Earth". One way or another, if Conan catches on it'll be compared to the previous big thing in the medium.

My question, as with all things Conan:

"Will there be a good adaptation of 'Tower of the Elephant'?"

Hell yes. I hope they actually try to make this thing good, unlike that awful Jason Momoa movie.

There has better be a lot of lamentation, that’s all I know.

As long as it's not like hercules or xena.

Conan in literature is actually fond of women, so there might be lamentation, but it most likely won't be a goal of his.

Remember the cartoon, Conan the Adventurer? It was toned down a lot since all his sword did was transport the Snake Men "to another dimension" (even though we know what that meant.)

It should be a little Hercules/Xena, though. Obviously way more violent and with huge production values, but some of that mythology feel & pulpy (even borderline camp) take should probably be in play here.

Mythology and pulpy style yes, but I would say no to the campy and comedic elements. We don't need to see Conan competing in a dance contest. Hercules and Xena were fun shows for their time, but I would preferably like it to avoid that style.

If you look at the 1997 TV series, it was clearly going for that Hercules/Xena aesthetic.

You wouldn't do it to the Ahnuld movies extent, absolutely. But as has been said, this isn't ultra-serious-stuff-is-serious Thrones or Rings, either. Or even the Momoa movie, that went a little too"grimdarkz" too.

Hercules & Xena comes off pretty primitive & laughable now - guess it did even then - but a little bit of that outlandishness wouldn't go astray. Just less of it.

Here's a neat interesting video from Midnight's Edge regarding the show:

Uhhh, the Mamoa Conan film was much more true to Conan than the Milnus/ Arnold Viking Spartacus movies were.

I honestly thought he was the worst part. Which surprised me because he was awesome on GoT. But I just found his performance flat and boring.

Conversely, I thought he was the best part and he brought a nice intensity to the role.

So what? That didn’t make it good.

To be clear, I don’t think either of the Arnold movies are great either.

So what? Made it better than the "original" films. Especially the beginning young Conan proving himself as a Warrior.

I hope this adaption tries to be more faithful to the books, and doesn't try to be dopey or YA appealing.

I want my Cimmerian Savage as all hell.

Come on, now. You have to have seen enough comic book movies to know that just making something that sticks closer to the source material than something else doesn’t automatically make it better. And it’s not like the Momoa Conan movie was THAT close of an adaptation that we should just ignore its shortcomings as a film. It wasn’t based on a specific Robert E. Howard story and it wasn’t a particularly well-made film.

And again, I’m not even defending the Arnold movies. I don’t think they’re good either. I want this series to not only be faithful to the original story but also GOOD. Because there hasn’t been much of that where Conan is concerned.

I consider Arnold's first Conan movie the best sword and sorcery movie made....but it wasn't REH's CONAN. I have watched it scores of times....will hopefully watch it scores more before I die....but Conan should never be said to have been a slave for most of his early life. He was a warrior and adventurer....not a giant wheel pusher. I love it as a fantasy adventure movie though.

I liked Mamoa's movie a lot. Not as much as Arnold's first....but better than his second.
