Sequels Confirmed Spin-offs

iF MAGAZINE: After the success of X-MEN: THE LAST STAND is WOLVERINE the movie going to be a sequel or a prequel?

AVI ARAD: I don’t want to call it a prequel nor a sequel. It is Wolverine’s story and it is really concentrating on him. It’s about his life, his mysteries, and his loves. It’s not really a prequel or a sequel. It’s just a story like in the comics where we have X-Men, Wolverine, and books dealing with the other X-Men. Obviously, Wolverine is the number one X-man, and deserves his own story. Hugh Jackman will make the story that much more compelling.

iF: Are you still planning a Magneto Movie?

ARAD: Starting with a younger version. It’s the story of Magneto’s life, and it will span some years.

iF: What are the chances of you and 20th Century Fox agreeing to do another X-MEN film?

ARAD: There’s always a chance of an X-MEN sequel. It’s more of an issue of what is the next X-Men story, and when to do it. The X-Men universe is forever and ever, and it’s the number one comic book. There are an endless amount of stories and great sagas that can go into the future, the past, and the present. There are so many more characters that we didn’t deal with yet. It’s such a rich world. I would not preclude anything.

iF: Are the characters that “died” in LAST STAND really dead?

ARAD: You heard what was said in the classroom right? How things were explained to the students, what’s possible. When you look at the way these people materialize when the Phoenix erupts, just reverse it and who knows?

iF: Was there anything cut from the film that will be on DVD?

ARAD: We didn’t cut anything for time, but we had things that we did specifically for the DVD. There are always choices, and lots of coverage. When you shoot a movie like that, there are a lot of choices to make and certainly some of it will end up on the DVD.

iF: So there will be an extended edition DVD with added scenes then?

ARAD: Absolutely.

iF: What was the original script that you started with like?

ARAD: The original script was more or less what we shot. Most of the scenes and the direction dealing with the cure and Dark Phoenix were all in there. The bridge scene was the first scene we plucked from a panel in the comics. These kinds of scripts are written with a lot of outlines, so it always starts with a big idea. The basic idea and characters were all done up front.

Wolverine makes complete sense for a lot of reasons. First of all they left a bunch of questions unanswered in X2 about how he got his claws and the whole Weapon X thing. Second, he's really old (remember Jean said his age is impossible to determine in the first one, thanks to his healing factor) and there are stories about him being a samurai and fighting in WWII with Captain America. Also I read somewhere that both of the actors who played Sabertooth and Deathstrike, both major players in Wolverine's backstory, signed two-movie deals and this could be that second movie.

Magneto on the otherhand...i'm not so sure. I love the character but between the opening scene's of X1 and X3 and the little tidbits of information you pick up here and there, what's left to tell? Maybe there's a lot in the comics that i'm unaware of, but for the most part i think we already know/have seen the most important parts of his story. He was a young Jewish boy during the Holocaust, discovered he was a mutant, became friends with Charles, helped him build his school but eventually realized that they had different opinions on mutantkind and had a falling out. I would much rather see them concentrate on an X4 after Wolverine, but that's just one fan's opioion.

Also trying to make a movie about any other character than these two would be even harder and i can't see it happening, although there are some interesting one's.

Here's an update on the Xmen Spin-Offs:

Possible sequel(s)/Spin-offs
Tom Rothman, head of 20th Century Fox, has made comments to that fact that there will most likely be a fourth X-Men movie[17].

Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry said that if the movie fares well, the franchise will continue. [18] The final scenes leave that possibility open. Vinnie Jones said that when contracting for his role as the Juggernaut, he signed for three movies, although this is standard procedure on planned franchise projects.

A Wolverine spin-off [19] and a Magneto spin-off [20] have been announced and are in the scripting stages. Another possible movie based on the character of Emma Frost, a mutant telepath who can transform her skin into an organic diamond substance and X-Men comics regular, is also being developed as a result of the success of the first three X-Men films. Three Kings director David O. Russell was contacted about creating a story for the character. A possible film based on the students at the school has also been mentioned. [21]

Avi Arad, executive producer, stated in an interview that Marvel would take its time to decide what to do with future X-Men films, but is focusing on the spin-offs. [22]

If the Wolverine spin off bombs, and Wolverine is in X-4,I wander if he will get less screen time after finding out that no one likes him like the studio thought they did.
