SAN BERNARDINO, June 29, 2007 - Outrage at justice not served, and gratitude expressed to the jury for a "not guilty" verdict -- those are the two opposite reactions to the acquittal of former San Bernardino Sheriff's Deputy Ivory Webb in the shooting of an Iraq war veteran that was caught on tape.

That videotape appeared to be so damaging to Deputy Ivory Webb; it showed him shooting Air Force Senior Airman Elio Carrion several times as Carrion was laying on the floor.
But there was other evidence in the case. Jurors say that the other evidence helped to convince them that Webb was not guilty.
Webb was facing up to 18-years in prison if found guilty on the manslaughter and assault charges. He shot Carrion in the chest, the shoulder, and the leg after Carrion and another man led the deputy on a high-speed chase back in January of 2006.
A resident captured some of what happened on videotape. On the grainy, 40-second video clip shot in darkness by an area resident, Carrion can be heard swearing at Webb before the deputy tells him, "Get up! Get up!" Webb, who is shouting expletives himself, then shoots Carrion in the chest, left leg and left shoulder as the victim appears to be obeying the order.
But jurors say the video does not tell the whole story.
"I want to thank the jurors, who came to an honest conclusion considering all the facts and came to a justified conclusion," said Ivory Webb.
"A military hero serving the United States of America gets shot down three times like a dog, and the criminal goes free," said Carrion's lawyer, Luis Carrillo, outside the courthouse. "The world is upside down."
Carrion was on leave from the Air Force when the shooting happened. He has recovered from his injuries and is currently serving on a base in Louisiana. His attorney is considering federal civil rights charges against Webb.
Webb is no longer in the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
Jurors say one factor that they looked at on the videotape is that it appeared to them that Carrion was reaching for his chest. To them, it looked like he was maybe reaching for a weapon. That is why they justified Webb taking the action that he did.

well congratulations America..we are so ****ing afraid to thump an African American when he's done wrong for fear of being called a 'racist'. That MF shot an unarmed man on the ground..and was acquitted toady as we all know. My country has lost all sense of right and wrong.

ok aside from him reaching for his chest, what other evidence was there to justify shooting the guy three times.

that's a bit of a leap. what are you basing that conclusion on?

why didn't he tell him to stay on the ground and put his arms behind his back?

dont know! Stupid cop told him to get up and he did and repaid him by with 3 bullets!!!:whatever: And was still cursing at the poor kid while he was down!!!:cmad: :cmad: :cmad:

What the hell is going on with the human race?

alot of **** like this happens here in L.A.

so any black person not convicted in L.A. owes their freedom to the public's fear of being labelled racist rather than the fact that they may be innocent? I'm curious, if you're so certain that this was reverse discrimination can you tell us what race each of the jurors were?

Nobody here knows what happened so it's pointless to codemn or heroicize the deputy, but this struck me as odd.....
Webb was facing up to 18-years in prison if found guilty on the manslaughter and assault charges.

Carrion was on leave from the Air Force when the shooting happened. He has recovered from his injuries

WTF is that?

maybe the charge was attempted manslaughter.
Lol, no such thing. You can't attempt to commit manslaughter. If you're trying to kill someone, that's intent and malicious.....murder.

manslaughter can be voluntary or involuntary so is it not possible to have attempted voluntary manslaughter in the sense that while the intent to kill was done in the heat of the moment it didn't result in death? I know next to nothing of the law so I'm really just throwing a random idea out.

If there was no death, then the charge that you described would be aggravated assault.

I was so sure that cop was screwed, the video tape was incredibly damning. I don't think this was because of reverse discrimination though, but I can't explain why this went down.
