Last summer as Comic Con was in full swing, David Cronenberg announced that he’d direct an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis. At the time he’d been trying to get The Matarese Circle made at MGM with Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington. But Cruise bailed and Matarese was left belly up.

Cosmopolis got put off a while, however, when financing came through for A Dangerous Method, Cronenberg’s adaptation of The Talking Cure, a play about Freud and Jung. But Cosmopolis is still kicking, and it now has Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard attached to play the lead couple.

One of the important details that was missing when the film was announced last year was the screenwriter, but along with this casting news Variety mentions that Cronenberg has adapted the novel himself. That’s great news; the director is a huge car aficionado, and the novel has an unusual automotive aspect. That is, it takes place entirely in a limo.

Cosmopolis tracks Eric Packer, a 28-year old billionaire who encounters odd characters and situations as he travels across midtown Manhattan in his luxurious stretch limo to get a haircut from his father’s old barber. Or, as Variety says, “the thriller follows a multimillionaire on a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan. Farrell will play the asset manager who loses all his wealth over the course of one day. Cotillard will play his wife.”

Given recent economic issues, it’s easy to see why this might be moving again. And the idea of Cronenberg working with Farrell is intriguing. The actor is on a roll, booking parts in this, Fright Night and Horrible Bosses.

There’s no studio on board this one yet; a Paris-based company, Kinology, is selling international rights at Cannes, and the film is being produced by Cronenberg’s company Antenna, and Alfalma Films out of Portugal. Which is great; I love when Cronenberg works as an independent. Especially with a source novel like this, which isn’t quite the typical salable fare.

Plans are to shoot the film from March through May of 2011.

I'm always down for new Cronenberg and this sounds very interesting and different.

Paul Giamatti is in active discussions to appear in David Cronenberg‘s adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s novel “Cosmopolis” which also stars Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard according to The Playlist.
The story is set across a 24-hour period and takes place almost entirely within a limousine which is making its way slowly through a city due to several events (including a presidential visit) keeping traffic at a standstill.
Colin Farrell would play a newlywed billionaire who cheats on his wife (Marion Cotillard), finds himself being stalked, attacked by a protester, and slowly losing his massive fortune.
Giamatti's role wasn't disclosed but is likely to be either said stalker, or the 'darker villain' behind the swindle. No production schedule is set as those involved have various commitments well into next year.

Well they certainly chose a interesting replacement for the lead role.

Yeah. I think Pattinson can act when given the right script and director, but the Twilight franchise isn't a shining example of his acting chops.

Keira Knightley replacing Cotillard?

The eagle eyes over at the the Cosmopolis fansite noticed an interesting update at the Alfama Films website. The production company is now listing Keira Knightley as part of the cast and considering there is only one female role in the film, it looks like she has gone ahead and replaced Marion Cotillard in the movie.

Update: a rep for Marion Cotillard tells us she indeed had to leave the project because of a scheduling conflict. Perhaps that “conflict” is her upcoming baby (she’s pregnant), but either way, she’s not in the picture anymore.

I've never been that big a fan of Knightley, but it's Cronenberg. I've read some passages of the book, and this should make for a really interesting, experimental movie, if all things go right.

I want this to be a crazy body horror/suspense kind of movie, once the main dude's life start's crumbling. :awesome:

Keira Knightley is cute when she isn't sporting really short hair. And Robert doesn't seem bad at all so far when he's not in those God awful Twilight movies,I hope that this movie is good enough, and I don't want to see a comical assassin in the movie. No thanks.

I fee like if the movie is about a guy who is in the limelight and Robert is more suited for that then Colin Ferrell, who has lost some of his star power over the years, despite displaying good work in In Bruge. But that was 4 years ago.

So has this Sarah whoever replaced Kiera Knightley or is there a second female in the film?

They didn't specific which role Cotillard and Knightley was supposedly to play but I believe it's the millionaire's wife, which it's now played by Sarah Gondon. Though she's not the only female in the cast since Juliette Binoche and Samantha Morton is also in the film but I haven't read the book so I wouldn't know which actress has the biggest role.

O..M..G! Metric is teaming up with Howard Shore for the score of the film. :applaud

Also, we just confirmed we will be working with our favorite film composer Howard Shore on the score for a new David Cronenberg movie starring Robert Pattinson, minus the vampires! It's an adaptation of the book "Cosmopolis" by Don DeLillo, and the themes are right in tune with the overall mood of the world at the moment. In "Cosmopolis", the rat has become a unit of currency!

Oh man, I can't describe the feelings I'm having right now, this is just too good to be true. I'm already looking forward to this but with Metric's involvement my anticipation just sky-rocket.

I can't take this kid seriously, he looks like one of those punks who has only lived his life vicariously through fiction, thinks he can just mess with people and get away with it, and could use a good dose of reality by way of an ass kicking.
which he will inevitably get from someone if he carries on in the way he has been.
But, he probably won't, because like most cowards and punks who don't know what they are talking about in reagrds to real life, he wouldn't have the balls to say the things he does to someone's face that he 'bravely' does when he is talking to the television.

I think this thread needs its title changed.

If Cronenberg can't get a good performance out of Pattinson then I don't think anyone can.
