In this thread we post our versions of Superman Returns. Taking the plot of Superman Returns (this means you can't just say you want an origin film based on STAS/Man Of Steel/Birthright or whatever), you have to explain how you would do things. Then other posters rate your film to see if you can actually do better than what Bryan Singer did.

Basically I would start the film showing Superman just before he has left. Lois is shoving Superman away, essentially breaking up with him. Superman can't understand why. Lex Luthor manages to evade prison. Things are looking down for Superman. Then news appears about the discovery of a far away planet, and Superman realises it is Krypton. He has a choice; go there and look for survivors, or stay here. Thinking he has nothing to stay here for, he leaves Earth without telling anyone, not even Lois.

Roll opening credits. Similar to the one used for SR, but this follows the journey of his ship to Krypton. At the end of the end credits we get a message saying 2.5 years later, and then the John Williams Krypton theme kicks in and we close in on ruins of Krypton, similar to the start of Superman: The Movie. This starts the "Return to Krypton" scene, which I would not have cut out. Superman sees there is nothing left, and makes his way home.

"2.5 Years later"

The ship crashes at Martha Kent's farm. She discovers her son has returned. This part of the film shows Superman contemplating on whether he should resume being Superman, and looking through old newspapers he sees all the catastrophes he hasn't been there to stop. One thing makes him angry the most; Lex Luthor is now a respected businessman, owner of LexCorp, the richest man in the world and basically owns Metropolis. Superman believes he has no choice but to resume his job as the world's protector.

We meet Clark at the Daily Planet. He is greeted by Jimmy, and as he makes his way to Lois' desk he notices something disturbing; a pulitzer prize for an article titled "Why the world doesn't need Superman" .. written by Lois Lane. He also sees a photo of Lois with a man and a small child. Jimmy explains Lois has a kid, but is not married yet. This disturbs Clark.

Then the plane rescue happens. But there is a massive difference at the end; Superman is booed by the crowd. As he flies off, he is pelted with hotdogs and sodas.

Lex Luthor is angered by Superman's return. He exclaims "Why is it everytime I do something productive, he comes along and ruins it all!" and we see him eying a peice of crystal on his desk.

Clark Kent reunites with Lois, meets Richard and the kid. Unable to cope with all thse new things, Superman flies to his Fortress of Solitude, and discovers all the crystals are gone. Superman knows immediately who is responsible, and flies to Lexcorp tower.

There, he interrogates Luthor, but Superman does not have the upper hand like the other times. Lex gloats over how he has turned the public against him and that Superman can't do anything about it. What really gets under Superman's skin is when he comments on how Lois' article helped him.

So things aren't doing well for Superman. The rest of the film basically goes the same, with maybe a bit more rescue scenes, like Superman stopping a train, rescuing people from burning buildings, etc.

Lex's plan is a bit different. This time he reveals that the island he is making now is merely a means of getting rid of those who can stop him, mainly Superman. He will make more islands that are more hospitable afterwards.

There is also a scene where Luthor uses his advanced alien technology to take down the military.

After all is said and done, Superman has lifted New Krypton into space and dies, we see how the public (and Lois) forgive Superman for leaving them. Lex Luthor is a wanted criminal. Superman comes back to life, visits his son and the film ends as usual.

So, i've made my input, now it's your turn to demonstrate how you can do better. You can also rate my version. Feel free to criticise, and let's keep any personal vendettas against Singer out of this ;)

LOL

i have a take on the sequel that i think could work.but as for returns.. i liked how it was.

no.. i think they have backed themselfs into a corner with the kid..but there are ways around that..i' looking forward to seeing whats next.

Its only because i see this film as "first part" of a larger narrative.

Unfortunately most people around here are too busy thinking about new ways to hate on SR rather than think about how a sequel can fix any flaws.

Thats true..i think they would change there minds if they realeased the original cut..with the Krypton return left in..clark deciding whether he should be superman anymore..

But..but the suit is too dark! The kid is there and he isn't in the comics! Lex isn't a businessman! The film is entirely wrong! Those scenes won't help at all! :o

I think about this all the time. If I had all the footage Singer shot and was abtle to cut and edit it, I think we would have that movie we all dreamed about. I would also have changed the color pallete and his hair.

To be honest, everyone could all draft fanwank scripts (anyone could do that).....

but could anyone on here pull together a 200 mil picture project with so many huge elements and feats to develop for it as well as Singer did?

Hell no.

I also would make some suit adjustments. I am just so aggrevated because Singer had all the hardest elements in place ie basing it on the Donner movie, John Williams music, Brando, a return story

WRONG!!!
i believe any of the previous production; Msg's, JJ abram's, kevin smith's, can do as good as singer's if not better. because a lot people wanna see a superman movie in the 21st century.

I was referring to the people on this board (whom the thread addresses) but lol to be fair;

McG/Abram and Kev Smith had their chance and their scripts sucked monkey balls.

but still they would make as least 200mil. believe it or not.

They might have. Especially with their matrix kung-fu, rape, suicide, Krypton not being destroyed and in civil war, giant spiders/thanagarian snare beasts, space battles, weapons etc...

But it wouldnt have been Superman and certainly not how I'd want to see Superman handled for the 'twenty-first' century.

The thing is we arent WB execs, why should BO results matter to us? It's about the films content and quality and I really doubt those scripts would have got a high critical rating anywhere close to Superman Returns.

Anyone who thinks they can do better needs to remind themselves that they work in a crummy office, whilst Singer & crew are busy making multi-million dollar films every few years.

They need to watch the DVD to remind themselves how much work goes into a picture as big as this one.

Even Donner could barely pull it together and went heavily overbudget. It's quite a huge process.

Well you really can't blame Kevin Smith for his script sucking. He was pretty much just writing within the limits of what Jon Peters told him to write. ;)

But, yeah, anyone who says they could do better are kidding themselves. Considering that I doubt any of them have made anything beyond a home movie before.

Unfortunately most people around here are too busy thinking about new ways to hate on SR rather than think about how a sequel can fix any flaws.

The flaws in SR cannot be fixed. They are there, and whats done is done. The only logical route at this point is to expand upon SR. However, even addressing certain things from SR, and "fixing" them, they are still flaws in SR. Unless they make a new movie, it can't be fixed.

not the right thinking IMO. you see if they invest 200 milions and they only make 100 milions than this is bad. but if i like hte movie ofcourse it doesnt matter.but what about hte sequel? a movie cna be one of hte bests. but comic book movies will always have sequels. so BO matters because if the sequel has a small budget than visual it can not look better than the first movie.

i used the numbers as an example.

Could you do better? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yes i could first of i wouldn’t add the darn kid that’s a big no, second i would show the powerful bond that Clark has with his parents and in the case of Returns Martha Kent. The Suit would be brighter as well as a bigger built Superman. Also Kryptonite would have its lasting effect and not just when a scene calls for it. Superman would well act like Superman (which means no flying all the way to an ex house and then proceeding to not only spy on her but listen to a private conversation between a man and his woman). More action for example a good scene a terrorist is holding a building hostage and then detonates a bomb but as the bomb sets of Superman fly’s so fast grabs the F.B.I agents that were close to the terrorist and blows on the bomb freezing it before the explosion consumes the building. The film would also be brighter and i would give the audience an in dept look at just what the big deal is about metropolis (the city of the future). Also the world would truly show resentment towards Superman for leaving them for 5 years and not just accept him back the moment he lands i would have him earn his right back into the peoples hearths. Another good thing would be to have a touching scene with Lois it would go something like this. Superman: I am sorry i left Lois i didn’t, couldn’t tell you i was leaving I wasn’t sure if i would even make the journey or if the ship was strong enough.

Lois: So you left me.. us for a journey you weren’t even sure you would survive.

Superman: Yes

Lois looks at him shocked and surprised

Lois: Why

Superman: When i heard scientist claim they had located Krypton i had to see if there were any survivors or if they needed help.

Lois: Where there

Superman Turns around jaws clench(the way Welling does eyes stare into the distance)

Superman: The place was a graveyard there was no one there but the vastness of empty space.

Lois approaches him about to place her hands on his broad shoulders then hesitates

Lois: I…. am sorry

Superman Smiles his face returning to the warmth he always reflexes.

Superman: Its ok Lois i may have been born on krypton but earth is my home.

And well you guys get the idea.

Anyway there would be tons more action and at the end i would have Braniacs ship heading to earth but it wouldn’t be seeing clearly just as a shooting star just after supes does his fly by.
