Really enjoyed this! There’s definitely some homages to Videodrome, Crash, Dead Ringers, and The Brood, but that scene really stuck with me more than any other scene he’s ever directed.
In terms of tone, style, approach, and how densely it layers themes through its central sci-fi conceit, it reminds me the most of eXistenZ. He wrote this around the same time as that film and you can totally see that, while at the same time the passage of the years for Cronenberg does inform the film's weight in how it is delivered. And there's a strain to Viggo's performance that I think probably would not have been as emphasized in a version of this that Cronenberg might have made 20 years ago.
