Crimes of the Future - The New David Cronenberg Film

Really enjoyed this! There’s definitely some homages to Videodrome, Crash, Dead Ringers, and The Brood, but that scene really stuck with me more than any other scene he’s ever directed.

In terms of tone, style, approach, and how densely it layers themes through its central sci-fi conceit, it reminds me the most of eXistenZ. He wrote this around the same time as that film and you can totally see that, while at the same time the passage of the years for Cronenberg does inform the film's weight in how it is delivered. And there's a strain to Viggo's performance that I think probably would not have been as emphasized in a version of this that Cronenberg might have made 20 years ago.

I've never seen eXistenZ, but I've read a few reviews for Crimes of the Future that compared it to that.

Neon changed this to a wide release at the last second and even then, the closest screening is a hour away. :argh:

I'm not sure what I just watched, and the ending felt a bit abrupt...but I do love me some creepy, unsettling body horror and this did deliver on that. Though I won't lie, when the movie ended and credits rolled, my reaction was this:

It made a little over a million this weekend.

If you have any love for Cronenberg, catch this on the big screen soon. It won't be there long.

So I saw it... I get what it's trying to be, but at the end of it, I was pretty much like...

I'll say this has some similarities to Phantom Thread believe or not.

This did feel a lot closer in tone to eXistenZ, but I think that is a better film.

I thought it was OK. Some interesting ideas, but not really a well-developed plot.

It's not really a plot movie, it's more about the themes, concepts, character dynamics, and vibes. That said, I think the plot might be better than some are giving credit, as there are certain aspects that as I thought about them more made more sense and clicked for me.

It's just that the film is more interested in talking about its ideas than its plot beats.

I wasn't talking about you, though, Vile. I saw some people questioning certain things online (such as the motivations of Router and Berst) that I think make sense when you think about it more.

I can certainly understand someone wanting more focus or dramatic structure from the plot, though I myself was perfectly good with it.

Soundtrack for this is finally on the Interwebs. One of Howard Shore's very best scores, imo.

7/10

This was mid-tier Cronenberg. Loved all the ideas about human evolution, but I wished the movie focused less on its detective plot and more on world building and characters. I wanted to learn more about what happened that led up to the current state of the world. Either that or maybe just have a more engaging plot, because I dozed off here and there. I was also kinda lost about who was on who’s side throughout. Another viewing will hopefully clear that up and I still liked most of what I saw.
