Critics' Reviews: Discussion

Gambit I know was in the film at least 10 minutes.

Overall rating: pants dropped to just above the knees.

Lol at that one.

As for Wolvy running through the tunnel, I know set reports and an amusing anecdote said he was actually naked, but is he naked in that clip, meaning not digitised out?

Otherwise it'd need to be... paused...

Yeah 10 - 15 minutes sounds about right. He was near the end but got his whole scene/fight, then traveling, then ending so...

It's not. It just seems that way because
it's spread out amongst 3 different scenes.

The bulk of his screen time comes from the casino / alleyway scene. That entire SCENE lasts no longer than 5 minutes, and it bounces around between Logan / Gambit, Creed / Wraith, Logan / Creed, and back to Logan / Gambit. So Gambit isn't even there the full 5 minutes of the scene.

The "Gambit plane" is a few seconds long. Probably 45 seconds, to a minute tops.

Then Gambit appears in the climax for a few quick shots, and a couple lines. He jumps in to save Logan from the crumbling reactor, says a couple lines, then Logan sends him off to find the kids. There is a very quick shot of him as he sees the kids off with Xavier, and then a brief dialogue with Logan at the end, after Logan has lost his memory.

Altogether, it's really no more than about 5 or 6 minutes. It just seems longer, because the scenes are spread out.

I timed how many scenes Gambit was present and I got up to 7 minutes before I got bored.

I stopped after Wolverine tells him to get the kids.

UK Press Association gives Wolverine 5 out of 10. Can't post it yet as it's embargoed till Friday. It's pretty negative though.

Wolverine is now at a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. 6 Fresh 2 Rotten.

Here's one of the reviews that called "rotten".

"Some of the f/x are exciting but it's Jackman (and the other actors) who deserve credit for rising above a clunky, preposterous narrative that's like a survey of popular American genres, horror, sci-fi, WWII actioners, rural melodramas and military farces"

- Emanuel Levy

Ok there's two bits to this, the complainy bit and the "I actually liked this film" bit:

The thing about Gambit was that when he wasn't fighting in that one scene, he was just some dude running around in a trench coat. Nothing much made him Gambit in the bit at the end where he's helping Logan out. Know what I mean?

When he came across Xavier (who, lets face it, looked like he'd had a bit too much plastic surgery. Thanks, bad CGI) I was hoping for a look between the two, a nod, SOMETHING to indicate he'll be in a future team film.

Here's what really gets to me: they marketed this movie as a team film. It's not a team film. It's a Wolverine movie. Why the heck were Cyclops and Emma Frost on the posters? Why all the character tv spots? Even Gambit and Wade Wilson, who were meant to be these big players, were only in like, 2 or 3 scenes each. I was particularly dissapointed with Wade, because they could've done a lot more. It was like, there he is, oh no wait, he's gone, now cut to the end of the film and he's Barakapool. I really hoped for a bit more detail on how they got him for Weapon XI.

That's fine but don't market this as a team movie if it's not, Fox. Gambit and Deadpool deserved more I think. If they didn't want to shoehorn Gambit into X3 (I'm glad they didn't) because he had no real role to play but lets face it, Gambit didn't need to be Gambit in this movie. Could've been anybody, really.

But that's all that really got to me, the fleeting supporting cast with almost nothing to do. I did enjoy the film in itself, I thought the action sequences were really, really good. The cast: great. They managed to carry off their characters convincingly and you did sympathise with a lot of them, which only made their scarce presence a bit sadder. I do think that it was a good lead up to the X-men films, and the ending where Logan loses his memory and didn't recognise his dead girlfriend lying on the floor, I had a lump in my throat.
Also, Gambit thinking he'd finally made a friend and Wolverine just being like "Go away, I don't know who you are". That was an '*****, son' moment.

And:

Lynn Collins after getting shot: "I'm cold". C'mon guys, really?

okay i actually saw this film last night (10pm showing) and here is my review:

the good
the actors i liked especially ryan renolds and liev schreiber. i feel that hugh jackman's natural likeability gives this interpretation of wolverine some real heart. barakapool's fight scenes looked pretty cool.

the bad
even though i liked the actor's, i felt that the direction was poorly executed. i felt at times that i was watching a bad van damme film. at least with those movies they are so-bad-they're-good, but i felt like with a better director, the performances could have been a lot better.

and the exploding helecopter bit looked like a pepsi max advert, almost a parody of an action scene (like when you see a movie within a movie,ie over the top and cliche'd)

the ugly
you know when a films in trouble when you see the audiences reaction.
a lot of logan's growling (the nightmare scene) got a lot of laughs, where it was supposed to be serious.
at times the actor's looked lost and uncomfortable (again i blame the direction) and this brought an awareness that i was watching a film instead of being engrossed in the plot.

verdict
another example of hollywood style over substance. it angers me how badly these characters get treated. nolan got it, hell, even most of the actors got it, you can see the effort they made in this, but again i think that the director was way out of his league. shame.

oh, and i saw no alernate deadpool ending.(if this is a lie, then shame on the people who made this up)

and it's the same film as the workprint, no extra scenes, just touched up special effects.

overall, a film with it's heart in the right place, but lacking any real credibiltiy. for me, i give it 2/5

That's good news. I've got my tickets for Friday night, I'm excited to finally see it.

Since it looks like a lot of people have seen the final film, I'm going to re-open the 'rate & review' thread. Just everyone remember that the reviews are for the final film only, not the workprint.

The reviews seems fair so far, although, I fear it will fall under 60% on RT. But, I hope to catch it in theaters this Saturday...go early to avoid the crowds.

The 'lighter' critics seem to be enjoying it a lot more...it could keep it over 60% if that trend continues. Maybe.

I'm seeing it at 7:30 on Friday, I'll be right in the middle of that crowd. Yikes.

I'm going to punch the next person who complains about Emma Frost's
lack of Native American heritage when she is Silverfox's sister

Do you know how easy it is to
not share the same ethnicities with someone you are related to, even as close as a sister? My brother has Mexican and Italian blood in him, which I do not, and I have Native American blood, which he does not. How is that possible? Very possible - it's called same father, different mothers. My mother is part Native American, while his mother is Mexican and Italian. The genes that we do share - Irish and German - come from our father. In the case of Kayla Silverfox, and Emma Frost, both with differing last names, it's very possible that they share the same mother, but have different fathers, Kayla's father being Native American. Therefore, Emma Frost would not have Native American blood, despite being Kayla's sister. It's a very common relationship called "half sibling"

I also have a half sibling, but I don't give nearly as much of a **** about this as you seem to. Get over it.

The fact is that, to the best of my knowledge, this relationship was entirely invented for the film and has no purpose other than to push Emma Frost's character into the film. It's just so forced and stupid.

No the reason they have made it like that is to give Kayla a reason to collude with Weapon X and stitch Logan up. It is there to give her a motive.

can anybody just come right out and say its better than x3? worse than x3...about the same...etc...?:yay:

According to Shuler-Donner she'd like to have Singer back to possibly direct the first Deadpool and/or Gambit film if Wolverine proves to be successful.

If they can bring back Singer that would be excellent. :applaud
I don't know. Apparently Wolverine was offered to Singer, he declined. Plus, I think Singer needs to get his **** together. I love The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, X-Men and X2. Superman Returns was ok, I liked all the stuff between Superman/Clark & Lois, but the villain stuff was cheesy. And Valkyrie was odd meh-ok film.

Did Fox distribute it in Europe and that? Because it was a hard 18 over here. Which is the equivalent of NC-17 for you guys I think.
Depends on the country: http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0936501/companycredits

I don't know how I feel about Singer directing Deadpool. It would be too conservative I reckon. He would get the psychology of the character right, but I dunno about the humour/action.

I liked it better than X3, although I think X3 had a better story. This was less cheesy and better acted.
