Daily Planet Redux: Man of Tomorrow News and Speculation Thread

Black Adam had some of the most gorgeous costumes in superhero movie history. The cinematography was also quite beautiful.

Too bad both were in service of nothing.

As much as I want to see Wonder Woman (and preferably a new actress) I hope it doesn't distract from Superman himself. I feel like the other heroes did get their fair amount of screen-time in Superman already. We had Metamorpho, Terrific, Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl. I want to see more Clark and Jimmy and Daily Planet. I think enough superhero cameos is enough. Not that they were cameos, rather the supporting cast, but I just feel like it needs to be more Superman-focused with Lois, Lex, Jimmy and so on. I could see Gunn going for Maxima, but it seems that would complicate the film's plot. Brainiac is in it so...

Maxima could just be Brainiac's muscle-- a reluctant bad guy working for/with Brainiac after he destroyed her home world.

I was surprised that Fate was 100% cgi costume. Come a long way from GL. Thoughj still prefer actual costumes

Black Adams problem is...The Rock cant lead a film like that. And you can tell the film makers knew it because it was mostly a JSA movie anyways.

It was a gorgeous film with a good cast wasted on a mediocre script and a one note star.

I will say the irony of a fascist loving dbag play a fascist character was pretty good.

I just find it weird that The Rock clearly wanted to play a superhero like Superman, but instead they got him for a Shazam villain.

The Rock would have been a terrible Superman. He doesn't have the charm to pull it off.

The Rock got over in wrestling by being entertaining and charismatic, yet he picked a very stoic, regal character like Black Adam to try to be the center of the DC universe. That character does not play to Rock's strengths as a performer at all.

Apparently he was offered to play Captain Marvel but when he read the script he chose to play Black Adam instead.

Or so I've heard.

Sorta. This was years and years before they even got the first Shazam movie off the ground back. He was approched to play Captain Marvel in 2006 but also was interested in Black Adam. Fast forward to 2015, IIRC he tweeted asking fans which one he should play and he claims he based his decision of what fans wanted.

Mind you this was back when it was supposed to be a Captain Marvel movie, not a stand alone Black Adam movie.

I actually wouldn't have minded Dwayne pulling a Jumanji as Shazam. :funny:

He wanted BA because it was a hero of color and make no mistake the fans wanted it too. Problem is he has zero gravitas and Black Adam (especially in the JSA run/era) is a commanding presence. The Rock is wooden and hollow which works in the right projects (playing a teen in Jumanji for example) but not a god powered anti-hero who rules a country.

I always hated The Rock as a wrestler (his skillset sucked he was all sizzle and no steak) but enjoyed him in films. But like most action stars when it is over it ends FAST. The fact that he is an egomaniacal juiced up fascist who was so worried about getting over he wouldn’t let Vin Diesel beat him in Vins franchise backs up my feelings.

That is really where Rock screwed himself. He could've parlayed helping to launch Shazam as a franchise by being the main villain of the first film, into more appearances in the DCEU and perhaps a solo film for Black Adam if the character was popular enough.

But by insisting on having his own movie as the character of Black Adam, he not only ****ed over the Shazam franchise by depriving it of its #1 villain, he also ****ed himself by making a Black Adam movie that no one asked for. Its the DCEU equivalent to all those Sonyverse Spider-Man villain movies like Morbius and Kraven and Madam Webb.

The Shazam and/or Black Adam movies have spent the best part of 20 years being in some form of development going from being talked about, to shelved, talked about, shelved etc etc all the way until recently.
The Rock's been connected with both roles as far back as the Bale, Routh & Reynolds days.

The only reason the film even got made now was because The Rock had taken to the character & given his star power now compared to 20 years ago when he was just starting, he was able to convince WB/DC to finally make the film.

Disregarding of the quality of the film itself, it was just bad timing all round to release a Black Adam solo film.
