Comics Dan Slott interview on CBR discussing the future of Spiderman...

It almost feels like they're already retconning the solution to the retcon so that fans will except the retcon and then they will not have to retcon the retcon to--oh, no! I've gone cross-eyed!!

What's scary is I understand that sentence perfectly, and agree with it.

See, if somethin' needs to be explained THIS MUCH, that means it was a CRAPPY STORY!

Does seem overly wrought and needlessly complicated. Looks to me like their tweaking things as the wind blows from fan reaction. :cwink:

Agreed. The Faustian "Deal With The Devil" had fans howling, and now it is being changed....

Marvel has SO lost their way with Spider-Man, it's really quite sad, and quite frankly, embarassing.....:csad:

Bringing Mephisto In : Fair
Deal with the Devil : Fair

Now when does Mephisto screw Peter? That's how he rolls. He screwed Ghost Rider over. When does the deal go sour? Or has it already? I expect Aunt May to keel over from old age any minute.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

Bringing Mephisto in was fine.

Having Peter actually make a deal with him is so out of character, it's ridiculous.

And sure; even in day to day life, people make bad choices. I do it all the time. But if evil incarnate appears before me and starts making offers, im smart enough to send him packing.

And Peter Parker is too.

Well, said, Captain!

I just don't get how this was percieved to be a "good idea". I didn't want MJ and Peter to divorce, nor did I want MJ to die, but either solution would have been preferable to this crap. At least MJ dying of the divorce would make sense, an it would follow the "Parker Luck" motif.

Instead, a deal with the devil was offered....ugh. Also, it wouldn't have taken much for Loki to have been the one to reset things. He owed Spidey a favor, after all. Sure, he was dead, but so was Magneto when he magically appeared in the 911 issue of ASM (not to mention that Dr. Doom got out of hell for it, along with Kingpin getting his eyesight back for the same issue).

So, the marriage happened but now it never happened, if we make believe.

And now, the mephisto deal that happened, didn't really happen or do anything to change things, because something ELSE happened that we've not seen yet that negates the devil deal that did happen that didn't really.

Wow, marvel is making lots of things in Spidey's World that happened so it never happened...and despite all the changes, everything happened the same.

MArvel keeps digging deeper and deeper. What a pit.

And what's this about how not only is everyone in the world mindwiped by the devil, but not really by the devil, yet now no matter what the clues, no one is smart enought o figure out he is spidey even if he yells it from the rooftops naked!??

And no one cares they can't remember things either. Gimme a break.

Explanations are usually silly sounding when you don't know all the details yet.

Well, apparently Marvel doesn't even know their own details yet.

Either that, or they don't like their previous details, so now they're trying to down play the original details and orchestrating the reboot through other means besides the devil.

I mean, why bother going thru the devil, so out of character and so forced to begin with?

By marvel downplaying their own reboot device...they are admitting how terrible it is, without actually admitting it, basically.

From what I gather here is what he is saying.

1) Peter unmasked in the front of the world. This still happened.

2) He and somebody else reversed it.

3) In this time line it could not be Mephisto because Peter could not exchange a marriage he did not have.

4) Therefore Mephisto has changed a small detail that caused a domino effect and made Peter go to this other person.

DC does this every ten minutes. It can only snowball from here.

This just in: Marvel's plans for Spider-Man for 2010 and beyond:

Plot-plot-plot-plot-plot-"Peter's world is rocked to its core"-plot-plot-plot-plot-plot-"Giant climax that will have Peter's life turned upside down".

:p

Man, i'm all for switching it up every now and then but why does marvel's status quo have to change every year now?? jeez.

Main stream comics is like Hollywood today, where the big events is the equivalent to the big summer blockbusters. And it doesn't matter how dull and mediocre the stories are; it's obvious that people buy it anyway.

I will say that this is why I WAS reading mostly Marvel. Now, I'm starting to get as much Image as I get Marvel...mainly because Image has better books, and creators who keep their stories moving forward.

Invincible-No Retcons....ans the best damn book out today.
The Walking Dead-No Retcons....and kicking ass since issue #1.
Noble Causes- No Retcons...although they are now in an alternate universe where Race Noble never died.
Girls-Made it through an entire 20+ issue run without a retcon.
Mice Templar-No Retcons.
Crawlspace- No Retcons....and has some of the sickest scenes in comic history.

Really? Titles that have only been around for, like, 10 minutes have no retcons? How do they do it?

by not following marvel and dc's bad examples? by having sense? wanting to tell a good story? crediting their readers with intelligence?

What he said.

Besides, Marvel never HAD to do retcons to make sense of established continuity....but they did it anyway. DC had multiple storylines and multiple universes, so the ORIGINAL Crisis made sense. However, the last, however many there have been, those were stupid.

Also, most of Marvel's titles haven't had full on retcons. New directions, sure. New ideas and creators, sure. However, Spider-Man is the main one that I can recall off-hand that actually tried to undo things in order to return to a previous point in the character's history which they thought would be "more entertaining". Thor, they killed him...he came back. Cap, they killed him, and he isn't back(yet). The X-Men have jumped through time, but they've never reset things to a "golden era" or anything. The same can be said for the Avengers and the FF.

Man the retcon is already having effects on all forms of spiderman media. In the Web of Shadows video game, spidey's not even married to mj.

I think he is, does it specifically say he isn't? I'm not finished with it yet though. (god saying no to screwing the Black Cat brought a smile to my face) The developers said BND is not taken into account for the game.

Oh did they? Ok my mistake then, it just seemed like they werent married when she appeared in the game.

well I haven't finished it yet, and I still need to play it through again as a bad guy, but that's the word on the street.

We'll see if you're saying this about Invincible in 20 years. They have the benefit right now of a mostly blank slate. That's why it seems fresh, and exciting. Wait until it goes through a few creative team changes.

Tell you what, if Mark makes any deal with satan I'll straight up drop the book and give it the same treatment. Until then I'll happily read about a superhero that acts heroic and sacrifices rather than hiding behind mephisto's skirt every time Marvel wants to create a drastic change on a book doing well just to come to the same place they've been trying to and failing at for years.
